Day 74 Yogyakarta to Cemorolawang (Wed 15th Sept) Early start at 0600 this morning with a packed breakfast again. We left Matt behind to try to find his washing and catch us up at our next stop. The days travel was uneventful and long. The last couple of hours we were going steadily uphill. In the end we had to leave our coach and load everything onto 2 minibuses to get up the mountains to our next stop, which is right beside Mt Bromo (volcano). We watched the sun set as we made our way up the steep roads and I could understand why we couldn’t come up in the coach. The views were spectacular though. It even managed to get a bit chilly here, due to the altitude. It was full dark by the time ... read more

Day 72 Pangandaran to Yogyakarta (Mon 13th Sept) Just another travel day today. We drove past Jakarta, which took hours! The amount of traffic in this country is incredible, but at least some of the roads are properly surfaced here. We also managed to get in before dark tonight for a change. We ate dinner at the hotel and had a relaxing evening. Actually, the only remotely interesting thing that happened all day was that we discovered (by way of a rather odd conversation to begin with) that Ali had been going to the toilet backwards. Since Iran. No wonder she never had enough room! Okay so I know Asian toilets are a little different, but really...this provided entertainment for quite a while and Lynn and I couldn’t stop laughing. Who needs a TV anyway? Day ... read more

Day 69 Bandar Lampung to Bandung (Fri 10th Sept) Left early in order to get the ferry from Sumatra across to Java Island. We arrived at the terminal by 0830 but had to wait for the next ferry (45 minutes) because the first one was already full. Its absolutely astounding how many motorbikes fit on these things! Since the ferry ride was to be a couple of hours, we went up to the top deck and commandeered some deck chairs to snooze in. The little bit of rain we got shortly after departure did nothing to quell the rather oppressive heat either. In the end, Helen and I went down to the air conditioned rooms for the last half hour of the trip. They had a movie on, and though I’m not sure what it was, ... read more

Day 67 Jambi to Palembang (Wed 8th Sept) So another early start today but I was at least feeling a bit better, despite the rather large goose egg on my head. We spent the day travelling and watched a couple of movies. Now Die Hard and Lethal Weapon have a few things in common, but one just happens to be that they are both set at Christmas time. So we decided to have a Christmas party at dinner tonight. Obviously. Arriving in Pelembang we took a walk down to a shopping complex to get some tinsel and balloons and buy our secret Santa present. Of course with a limit of 10000 (€1) it was actually harder than you would imagine. And the shopping was a bit odd too. You selected an item, and a worker took ... read more

Day 65 Melaka to Pekanbaru (Mon 6th Sept) So the ferry port was only about 30-40 minutes from the hotel and we arrived there just after 0800. Our ferry wasn’t until 1000 so we had plenty of time. Matt warned us that there may not be anywhere to exchange money for the first few days in Indonesia, so most of the group had withdrawn money yesterday and changed their Malay Ringgit for Indonesian Rupiah at the port. Since I was planning on withdrawing money instead of exchanging it this time, I just had a nap on the coach instead... We boarded the ferry first, skipping the queue completely for some reason. The ferry was small, crowded, and smelt like fuel. The trip was to be 2.5 hours and the jokes that the boat might not make ... read more

Day 64 Penang to Melaka (Sun 5th Sept) Breakfast today was lovely and it was a day for catching up on sleep. I managed to stay awake to take pictures of the bridge as we got to it, but then promptly fell asleep, along with everyone else on the coach. All that we missed seeing was a whole lot of plantations of what seemed to be palm trees. And boy were there a LOT. Our lunch stop today was Kuala Lumpur. It was on the Ozbus itinerary at one point I believe but wasn’t any longer. We left early this morning from Penang because everyone wanted a chance to go in to KL. The city is really interesting to drive through. It has been over 5 years since I was there and you do forget some ... read more

Day 62 Koh Samui to Hatyai (Fri 3rd Sept) An earlier morning than the past few days today. Departing at 0700, we were up in time to experience the sunrise, which made the beach look lovely despite the appalling hour of the day. We received a packed breakfast which we did manage to eat on the ferry. They really like their lychees over here for breakfast, although they are much neater to eat if you don’t have to peel your own... Today was a simple travel day and we were all glad of the lovely coach used all through Thailand. Some of the group bought DVD’s to watch on the coach, which was a good idea for the long drives. Or at least it would have been a good idea if they had checked to see ... read more

Day 58 Bangkok to Koh Samui (Mon 30th Aug) Well, as mentioned previously, it was a rather early start today. The coach was to depart at 0500, so I made sure to be back at the hotel by 0415, in order to shower and pack before leaving. Actually I made it in just before Helen got up so it worked out well. We made it down to the lobby in plenty of time, only to discover that Matt and Norma were the only others there. Turned out Stephen and Tomas were just running a little late, Lynn slept in, Heather was being sick after her big night, Ali was packing and when she was phoned, she told Matt that Jo never came home. A little bit of chaos to start our morning off right. So Matt, ... read more

Day 54 Kolkata to Bangkok (Thurs 26th Aug) Another border crossing today! Fortunately we are flying this time and it is always easier to get through in an airport than it is at the land borders. Our flight was late morning so we allowed plenty of time to get to the airport, which was about an hour from our hotel. Our bags had to go through security and get security tagged before we checked in and then we had to change our money. Apparently Indian Rupees are restricted currency so we can’t change them elsewhere. Changing money was interesting. Much like in the Mediterranean countries, they don’t know the meaning of the word ‘queue’ here. It was chaos, but I did manage to squeeze my way in until I got to the window. And when some ... read more

Day 50 Kathmandu to Hetauda (Sun 22nd Aug) A very late start today, as we didn’t leave the hotel until 1100. So we all managed a leisurely breakfast, at which point Lynn, Jo and I met the new tour leader. Matt had joined the group yesterday while we were away and so he introduced himself at breakfast and went over with us any information that he had given the others yesterday. He seems like a fairly laid back guy and should fit in well with the group. It’s nice to know there is someone there to sort out any difficulties for us (despite being capable of taking care of things ourselves, it is just far more relaxing to have someone else do it - and who cares if this makes us lazy)! So after leaving Kathmandu ... read more
