Monday 25thNovember (Odyssey Day 17) Today we moved camp from Camping Pehoe, to Camping Torres, though I’m not sure if that is actually the name of the campsite or not as there weren’t really many signs around. On the way over to the other campsite, we stopped to take some pictures of a herd of guanacos. Quite a large group of them, and seeing them stand up and lay down, they really reminded me of camels (which I believe are part of the same family). When we arrived at the new campsite we set up our tents by a small stream and then relaxed for lunch. Unfortunately, when the manager of the camp said ‘set your tents up anywhere’ he didn’t actually mean ‘anywhere’… So we had to move. Since it was only a couple hundred ... read more

Thursday 21st November (Odyssey Day 13) Today was a slightly earlier start as we headed for the border for our first crossing into Chile. We had an early lunch to finish all our fresh foods before they could be confiscated at the border. While we were stopped for lunch on the side of the road, we had a visitor in the form of a guy who is cycling around Argentina. That is a bit more ambitious than I care to think about – especially in this wind! Good luck to him though. We crossed the border near Rio Turbio, heading toward Puerto Natales. It was a relatively easy crossing and I have a new stamp in my passport now. There was a bit of confusion as they made us unload our luggage to scan it but ... read more

Tuesday 19thNovember (Odyssey Day 11) Our departure today from El Chalten was 0820 today and we had to make a quick stop for Eamon to pick up his washing since he forgot to go back to collect it last night. They did eventually open the door for him, even though they weren’t open yet. It was our free morning entertainment as we all watched the drama from the truck. And then we were on the road to our next camp. We headed south for just three hours to the town of El Calafate. It was a rather short but scenic trip today and we arrived at lunch time. Our campsite here in El Calafate is far more sheltered than the previous one and we are all relieved that we won’t be blown away tonight!! We had ... read more

Saturday 16thNovember (Odyssey Day 8) During the night I’d been woken by the sound of cars going past our camping area. I could have sworn there were a dozen of them at least making all that noise over the gravel. When I got up in the morning it was to discover that while there were suddenly an extra 7 tents, all that noise was from only two cars… Obviously I was more tired than I thought. We had crossed a long red bridge to get to the island but I had missed the opportunity to get pictures (the chance for a hot shower took precedence over walking down to the bridge for photos, though unfortunately there was no hot water and the shower was cold… I’ll know better for next time). So going back across the ... read more

Thursday 14thNovember (Odyssey Day 6) Sleepy drive day today. I just couldn’t keep my eyes open! Guess I didn’t sleep as well as I thought last night if I’m sleeping so much today. We were up at 0600 for departure at 0700. Our first pit stop today was at an old dilapidated road house. It was looking a little rustic and if you saw it in a movie, you would almost expect a serial killer to jump out at you… There was no water in the taps in the basins, but at least the toilets flushed. Though the fact that they had a few long mirrors around an empty room was a little odd… The landscape today was incredibly flat. There were no hills, and it was almost like the landscape had been inverted and instead ... read more

Tuesday 12thNovember 2013 (Odyssey Day 4) It was a nice lazy start to the day today. Our tour of the Peninsula Valdes didn’t start until 1000. Quite a lay-in for most, although very few managed to sleep that long! The camp is nice and apart from the dogs that seem to live around the camp, it is pretty peaceful. There is a largish group of kids in the camp but they are not up early. Probably because they go to bed so late at night!! They seem to eat at around the time some of our group start going to bed… It’s much dryer here at this camp also, without the condensation in the mornings. The washing I hung out last night near the tent was completely dry this morning. It was surprisingly easy to get ... read more

Saturday 9thNov (Odyssey Day 1) Today is the day we start the trip! At breakfast this morning, Ellie and I met Simon and Emma, our Odyssey crew for the trip. After a leisurely morning, I managed to repack my bags to fit everything in comfortably. We also gained a new roommate (since tonight is paid for as part of the trip), Ann from New York. AT 1700 we all met up in the breakfast room for an introduction to the group we will be spending the next six months with. There are 23 of us, plus Emma and Simon. Quite a sizable group really. A mix of people from England, Ireland, Australia, Canada, the USA, and one polish girl who actually lives in Ireland. A mix of ages and actually there are five couples on the ... read more

Thursday 7th November We decided on a lazy day today. Weather forecast gives storms tonight and it’s already looking rather overcast. We walked down to see the ARA Presidente Sarmiento, a slightly larger ship than the one we saw yesterday. Ellie flat out refused to go up a couple of the ladders though. Just as we were leaving the ship, a school group came aboard. It was like getting lost in a sea of children – I’ve no idea where they all came from! Who knew children were so short? They were all wearing little uniforms and staring at us – you have to love the lack of inhibitions in children. And then, of course, it started to rain. Just a few drops to start with and we thought we might just ignore it a keep ... read more

First day in Buenos Aires!! Wow it’s hard to believe that after so long, I am finally here in South America. It is a trip that has been long in the making! Unfortunately my body clock hasn’t quite caught up with the fact that I am on holiday now and I woke at 0600. Since Ellie was also up at that time, we decided to get ready early. And then we had to wait for breakfast anyway! Breakfast was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t expecting much really since it’s a fairly basic hotel, but the breakfast buffet was good. There was fresh fruit salad, fruit yoghurts, juice, cereals, 4 types of bread, ham, cheese, cream cheese, croissants, sweet croissants, a sweet lemon cake and some other type of sweet slice that we just couldn’t quite place ... read more

Buenos Aires here we come!! Our flight out of Perth this morning was at 0540 and even though we were there 90 minutes early, it took so long to check in for our flights that we only had time for a quick drink after going through security and then I was saying goodbye to my wonderful taxi driver and boarding the plane – thanks so much mum, you made it an easy morning even though it was early!! We arrived in to Sydney at lunch time but Ellie and I were both feeling lazy (and isn’t that a wonderful start to the trip?) and decided to just stay at the airports instead of going in to the city. So now I know exactly what is available in the duty free shops in the Sydney International Airport, ... read more
