Day 91 Adelaide to Narrandera (Sat 2nd Oct) We were meant to leave at 0530 this morning but it was nearly 0600 by the time we got away. Everyone was a bit slow after a big night out. A big driving day today, through 3 states. Our first stop today was at the quarantine point around 0700 where we had to dispose of all fresh fruit and vegetables. We didn’t have too much with us but they work off the trust system here. There isn’t really any choice in that, as the roads are too open to control. The fines are pretty strict though I’m told. We stopped at Waikerie to see the riverboats and came across a whole load of old classic cars. It’s like moving back in time with the riverboats on one side ... read more

Day 89 Yalara to Coober Pedy (Thur 30th Sept) So we were gone from Yalara at 0430 today, on our way to South Australia. We had to drive back through Erlunda to get to the highway again. We reached the state border at 1000, and made it to Coober Pedy by 1530. The land around the town is all mining area and there are piles of earth all over the place. A bit dangerous if you want to go for a walk, but you aren’t actually allowed to do that anyway. Our first stop in town was at a mine, right next door to the place we will be staying. We had a tour of the old mine tunnels and where the folks used to live. Some of the opal jewellery is absolutely beautiful and it ... read more

Day 87 Kings Canyon to Yalara (Tues 28th Sept) We left before dawn today, for a quick drive out to King’s Canyon. We were there for 0700 so anyone who wanted could do the 3 hour walk around the top of the canyon. I elected to do the shorter walk along the bottom of the canyon instead, along with Ali, Jo, and Norma. It was a really nice walk and the place is beautiful. There was even a bit of water in the waterway running along the canyon. We spent about 1.5 hours wandering along the Canyon and could see the people walking along the top. We even managed to recognise Tomas and Lynn when they went past. It was a long way up. Just before 1100 we left the Canyon and our next stop for ... read more

Day 86 Alice Springs to Kings Canyon (Mon 27th Sept) Today we had a free morning in Alice Springs. We had to check out of our hostel at 1000 so most of us slept in until than and then left our bags in the storage room. We were leaving at 1230, so we had a few hours to explore. Alice Springs was a lovely little town. It was very clean, and I really noticed how equipped it was for wheelchairs. There were ramps everywhere, and even easy access to the car parks. Strange the things you notice sometimes. I walked into town, which was only about 15 minutes from the hostel, and spent a couple hours just wandering. Did a little shopping, finally managed to send off my postcards, and took a few pictures. Very relaxed ... read more

Day 85 Daly Waters to Alice Springs (Sun 26th Sept) We were up before the dawn this morning so we could get going at 0430. Needless to say we all went straight to sleep once on the bus. We stopped at a road house for breakfast at 0715 and Matt was in a bit of a mood because his soccer team lost. Other than that the day was quite good. A long way to travel but a few breaks on the way. We stopped to climb a lookout hill at one point for some good views of the land and then shortly after we stopped at the Mary Ann dam. We made Tennant Creek at 1000 and it was so very quite on a Sunday morning. Then we went on to spend a half hour at ... read more

Day 84 Katherine to Daly Waters (Sat 25th Sept) Up this morning in time to get some pics of the pre-dawn sky which was a beautiful red colour. Heather and I had to be ready to leave at 0645 as we were going for a helicopter flight over the Katherine Gorge. Our pilot was Scott, and he took us up in a little tiny yellow helicopter that looked like a bubble. He explained that while people said there were 13 gorges, there was really just one, but the low water levels meant it was divided into 13 separate pools of water. The flight was about 20 minutes long and well worth it, we even saw some water buffalo and some kayaks on the water. The others came by in the coach to pick us up at ... read more

Day 83 Jabiru to Katherine (Fri 24th Sept) Up, had breakfast and all packed to go by 0730 this morning. Our first stop was up a little hill to see some old shelters with some more rock art. Some gorgeous views, interesting art, and even a little exercise to start the day... We made a stop by a billabong to see the birds, then we also stopped by a waterhole for lunch and a swim. I skipped on the swim but did find a comfy rock to sit on and dangle my feet a bit. It was lovely and cool in the shade with little fish swimming around but fortunately no crocs. Although there were signs saying crocs can get in to the area. Needless to say we all waited for Wombat to jump in first ... read more

Day 82 Darwin to Jabiru (Tues 23rd Sept) In the lobby at 0630 today in order to meet our Australia tour guide. His name is ‘Wombat’ and he has been doing these tours for 8 years and we are lucky enough to be his last group. He is the driver/guide and will pretty much run the last couple weeks of the trip leaving Matt with absolutely nothing to do... (no offence intended). We finally departed at 0700 for the first leg of our journey. The coach is a small 21-seater with a little trailer attached to the back. A good size actually with plenty of room for us all, and all the junk we have accumulated along the way. First stop was an aboriginal cultural centre where a few of the simple aspects of life in ... read more

Day 80 Darwin (Tues 21st Sept) So we reached the shores of our final country in the early hours of this morning, some time after 0230. At that time of morning, immigration and customs and I didn’t have to wait very long for everyone else to come through. We then got a shuttle bus from the airport to our hostel on Mitchell Street, arriving by 0400. Darwin was still dark, of course, but we could see it was a nice small city. While checking in, Stephen realised that he had lost his wallet and so he ended up heading back to the airport. The rest of us lugged our stuff up to the third floor and settled in - all the girls in an 8-bed dorm. By the time I had my shower and got to ... read more

Day 76 Cemorolawang to Bali (Fri 17th Sept) 0500 departure today, so again a packed breakfast. We watched the sun rise as we were leaving the resort. After a fun ride down the mountain (though a few of the group preferred not to look), we rejoined our coach and were on our way. We made it to the ferry terminal just in time to drive straight on to the 1100 ferry. The trip from Java to Bali was only about an hour long and uneventful. The water actually looked quite a lovely deep blue and made me feel like going swimming. And of course the clocks go forward another hour here, bringing us in line with Perth. Again. While on the ferry coming over, Norma turned to me and asked “so, in this part of the ... read more
