Thursday 6th February (Odyssey Day 90) We departed lovely Cusco at 0700 this morning, since we have a difficult drive over the mountains. We left Maddie and Lou for a few days and they will catch us up in Lima. Getting out of Cusco was interesting and we got lost trying to find the right road. The satnav wasn’t much help and it took over an hour to get fully out of the city. I don’t envy Simon that job, as the roads are narrow, the corners blind, and the drivers reckless! We headed through the mountains again and the way we drive through the clouds is still breathtaking for me. The scenery is always amazing and hasn’t yet lost its grandeur. I doubt it ever will. Having grown up in Perth (Australia), where there are ... read more

Sunday 2nd February (Odyssey Day 86) Breakfast was at 0615 this morning and departure at 0700. It’s about 10 hours to Cusco apparently and the roads are open according to the bus station. We passed some beautiful scenery as we drove today. It rained on and off and some of the roads had mud or rock slides and a couple of places were being cleared and we had to wait our turn to go past. We were heading up into the mountains and for the first time in well over a month, the weather was expected to get cooler. I did manage to spot a stunningly beautiful metallic blue butterfly fluttering around one of the streams we stopped by though. I have never seen anything like it before. We stopped to buy our own lunch in ... read more

Friday 31st January (Odyssey Day 84) We departed the lodge at 0800 this morning. Fortunately it had not rained again overnight and we were able to pack up and drive out with relative ease. Or at least, Simon made it seem easy – I imagine the roads were still rather muddy though. We arrived at the border between Brazil and Peru at lunch time. We passed out of Brazil, but the Peru side closed for a lunch hour at 1300. We arrived just as they closed, so we set up our lunch on the side of the road right there! And now we are in Peru! The first thing everyone did was change some money. Since we don’t know when we will arrive in town tonight or where the hotel is, we thought it prudent to ... read more

Monday 27thJanuary (Odyssey Day 80) We had breakfast in the parking lot again this morning before heading out today. We departed the hotel at 0700 as it was to be a very long day. We gave Leen a lift about an hour down the road so she could head back home and then we continued on North West, heading for Jaru. I sat at the front of the truck again today and this is my favourite place since I can sit on the front bench easily from here. I like to be able to lounge and spread out along the front. When others have the front seats, they leave too much stuff on the bench and it’s harder to sit there, but when its my turn at the front, I get the front bench. It’s much ... read more

Saturday 25th January (Odyssey Day 78) We departed from camp at 0700 this morning after packing up in the rain. It was drizzling when we woke and just kept getting heavier, then lighter, then heavier again – but didn’t stop raining at all. We had to pack up our tents and the truck in the rain, while walking across sodden grass and mud, trying to avoid the deceptively deep puddles of water that were scattered around and lying in wait for unsuspecting and tired travellers in the pre-dawn. Well okay, that sounded a bit dramatic, but it certainly had the effect of improving our balance as we tried not to slip over and get everything we were carrying muddy. We headed back to collect Leen from near Chapada dos Guimarães. She had been one of the ... read more

Thursday 23rd January (Odyssey Day 76) We had a relatively late start today, departing at 1030. I believe the main reason was because we had to collect our laundry and it didn’t open until 0700. As it turned out, we needed the extra time because it was a bit complicated to get our clothes back. It was all mixed up and they tried charging double what was quoted. It certainly served to exasperate everyone. I was one of the fortunate few who got all my clothes back – there weren’t too many who could say the same (and there were a few people who got a shirt or two back the next day as people went through their bags and found more things that didn’t belong). We headed for Pousada Bom Jardim, a campsite not too ... read more

Monday 20th January (Odyssey Day 73) After packing up the camp this morning, we headed back into Jaciara and spent an hour and a half in town. After Joanna and I did another shop for the bar (a never ending job it seems), I managed to find a café to have a drink and use the internet, and then even had time to do some personal shopping. I also found a chemist. The guy there didn’t speak English but we got our points across quite well I think – ‘buzzzz’ *slap* means mosquito and ‘buzzzz’ *swat* means fly. So yes, I managed to get some insect repellent and some antihistamine cream for fly bites (which I wasn’t the only one to suffer from at the Jaciara camp). We arrived in Chapada dos Guimarães around 1630. The ... read more

Friday 17thJanuary (Odyssey Day 70) We departed camp this morning at 0900 after taking the opportunity to fill the water tank, seeing as we are heading for a bush camp tonight. There was some arguments about seating plans this morning, and really I wish people wouldn’t come to me to complain. I get complaints about the seating, and then when we try and fix the problem I get more complaints about it all. It’s not like it’s a difficult concept, sometimes it seems like no one can think for themselves. Ironically enough (though not unexpected) it is the people who complain who are generally the ones who are being selfish about the whole issue anyway. The ones who do the right thing all the time don’t tend to complain. The bush camp tonight was on a ... read more

Wednesday 15thJanuary (Odyssey Day 68) We packed up our bush camp and departed at 0800. We only made three very brief stops on the way today, including lunch. We arrived in Brasilia around 1730 and met up with Donna and Glen at the hostel. Their bus from Rio had passed us on the way this afternoon. We set up our tents and everyone piled into the showers hoping for some warm water. They were all to be disappointed here, but at least we could get clean. Truthfully, I don’t mind the cold showers in Brazil – it’s far too hot most of the time to have a hot one! We tried to get dinner ready quickly because tonight we did the quiz that Toby had prepared for Christmas. Since he couldn’t talk at Christmas, it was ... read more

Saturday 11th January (Odyssey Day 64) We had a nice lazy start this morning, as we didn’t depart until 1000. Donna and Glenn decided to stay a few extra days in Rio, so they will catch us up later in the trip, likely in Brasilia. The rest of the group are sad to leave Rio, but made the most of the late start to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and one last trip to the beach. We made a lunch stop in Petropolis, a lovely town not too far from Rio. It’s one of the older towns and is still used by the wealthy as a holiday spot. A lot of the roads are paved and there is the Imperial Museum, which was once the Summer Palace of an Emperor of Brazil. Our camp tonight is in ... read more
