Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao June 1st 2006

I awoke just before docking, and got my things together before barging my way out onto the jetty and straight through the touts to the town beyond. I found a place to stay and a place to dive - the two most important things! I have wanted to do some specialty courses for a while - Enriched Air and Deep Diving and decided that with Ko Tao being a famous place to learn that this would be where I would do these courses. Of course the flip side is that that meant spending all day in the classroom.... I had forgotten her cheesy, poor quality and generally crap the PADI videos are, but I was soon reminded. My breakfast pork steamed bun kept me running until lunch - Tom Yum with seafood. For those who have ... read more

We've been here for a few days now, spent 3 nights in the city and did a couple days in Halong Bay (write about there in another blog). We've added photos to the last Bangkok blog as well for you to check out. We arrived the night of the 28th (Saturday) on a late flight. Eight of us non-Asians ended up congregating together after the baggage claim, all kind of looking around to figure out where we go, where we get money, and turning away the touts trying to offer us rides. We ended up getting a taxi with an English couple. They had actually booked a room at a hotel so we figured we'd just try to stay at the same one since it was nearly 10pm. Kind of dodgy getting a taxi, and we ... read more

Amarapura is another capital full of temples, stupas, and sundry ruins. And neither hell nor high water were going to make either Magdalena or myself subject ourselves to another plunk of dead bricks. Especially when there is a wonderful lake in front of us. Taugthaman Lake is a shallow pond more than a lake. There are no shortage of boats, but most of the fishermen prefer wading waist-deep in the muddy water in search of fish. Probably cooler. The only people swimming were a few kids, though it's doubtful the swim actually made them any cleaner. We wondered over U Bien's Bridge, which is rather underwhelming compared to its fame as a tourist attraction, to, as you can imagine, get to the other side of the lake. The bridge is 1.2km long and made of wood. ... read more

The Quest I’m writing today from the train, on the way to Shanghai, the start of yet another transition. I’ve been offered a job as director of the Y+ teacher training academy and I’m traveling with a suitcase full of books and all my ‘winter’ gear. The job offer came two weeks ago when I was visiting with the current director, Rachel Hull. She’s an Australian teacher whom I met during my year in Byron Bay. She taught part of the teacher training that I took back in 2003 and has been here since last March. She got the program started and now is moving on. We were having a drink in the Element Fresh café attached to the new Xintiandi (new sky and earth) studio in Shanghai. I knew she was leaving and wanted her ... read more

Greetings gang, Sorry no pictures as yet but everything seems to be going well. The bar's been abit slow at late but with the World Cup around the corner things will pick up.I have loads of ideas which will soon be put into practice.Having my experiance in bar and restaurants has helped and now i'm trying to plan a promotion that should blow the rest out the water and leave one bar drowning. We've been having problems with this dickhead next door who likes to copy other people's work.Nevermind enough of me banging on,not much has been happening.I started a new school 3 weeks ago and it's going well although my throat is sore every Friday from shouting too much.Other then that I've been really lazy and sleeping every moment I get. Anyway guys I'll extend this when ... read more

Alrighty then. Home, here we come! It is about 5:15pm now (Korean Time), we board in about 10 minutes, so I'll keep this short and sweet. The time difference now is 14 hours from here to San Francisco. According to that, we should have been home a couple of hours ago (if the time had no hour difference). We will be following the sun, so it should be great. We have had a 10 hour delay in the Business Class lounge, very cushy and comfy. Our flight is just over 10 hours long, we will be home before we know it. Thanks for everyone checking up on us. This truely has been a blast! You can reach both of us anytime back in Tahoe. Our arrival into Chengdu, a city in South Western China (pop 4.1 million!) was one of the easiest so far. After a relaxing one hour flight from Xi'an, we boarded a shuttle bus to the city centre. Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan province, famed for its spicy cuisine and also..... the home of the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, hoooorah! The first thing we noticed about Chengdu was its relaxed pace. After the frantic activity of Beijing and our whirlwind tour of Xi'an it looked as if Chengdu would be a really chilled place to spend a few nights. The Lonely Planet described the rooms at Sam's Guesthouse as "tired" but I don't know what kind of room the reviewer saw but it certainly wasn't what we got! For 120 Yuan a night for ... read more

We got a coach down to Hoi An today via Danang. Our new hotel is fantastic aswell and it has a pool!! Hoi An is a nice place and the main thing here is tailors. you can get absolutely anything made to fit here and they have copies of catalogues to make you anything or you could bring your own design. It's famous for suits but i'll not be needing a business suit for at least the next year so not bothering with that. I did get a dress, pair of cropped trousers and shorts made to measure though for a grand total of US$30. The boys and a couple of the girls got suits too. Yesterday was Liz's 26th birthday so after shoppping we went out for a meal and some drinks. the bars here ... read more

Hi all. At the moment we're in Hong Kong and its great to be back here. We've decided that we think it's just like London, but more sparkly and exciting - and everything is open later. However we're not really supposed to be writing about HK in this blog - this is meant to be about our final days in Beijing. The issue with this is that we're now away from Beijing, and in our last days of the trip to SEA, so we are suffering slightly from Blog Lag - we're just so keen to get home for our lovely visit! Beijing, on the whole, for us, turned out to be just OK. We had an interesting enough time, and enjoyed the activities we undertook, however we were hogged with that stupid cold, and the ... read more
