Asia » South Korea » Busan June 2nd 2006

Jan and I took the 3 hour KTX (Speed Train) to Busan on Friday morning. We had set this weekend aside to do some adventuring. It all started at the Seoul Station where trains and busses set off to all over Korea. They run from Seoul to Sokcho, Mokpo, and Daegu, covering the country as though they are the veins that sustain its existence. Busan is located at the most Southern tip of Korea. The city itself is not quite that different from Seoul. It has a subways station and towering buildings; there are street venders and even a Busan tower. What Seoul doesn’t have though is a fish market and beaches. Right when we got to Busan we dropped our stuff in a locker and headed down to Jagalchi Fish Market. When we arrived here, ... read more

Tuesday 23rd May 2006: Joel ''Ah, Baku! How long shall we spend here'' Adam ''Well, we'll get our visas sorted and then see when the ferry goes. Hopefully just a couple of days'' Joel ''Aye, hopefully just a couple of days. I don't think theres that much to see here anyway'' We arrived into Baku in the baking heat. Clear blue skies and a slight mugginess in the air. We had decided to walk to the hotel we had chosen but had gotten our bearings completely wrong and had ended up walking in the wrong direction for a good 20 minutes. Eventually, after a couple of breaks to relieve the weight of our packs which seemed particularly heavy in the morning heat, we found the hotel Canub, situated right in the centre of the town, one ... read more

Bangkok was a great relief after Delhi - everything so easy, and people so friendly - well, we were a little wary of the constant cacophany of cries "HEELLLOOOOOOO MAASSSAAAAAGEE" !!. After a couple of days acquainting ourselves with the fleshpots of the city (courtesy of Enda and his ragtag posse!), we set off for Koh Samet for some beach time (having met up with Aileen who was unfairly looking very tanned compared to my pasty skin!). Despite being caught there during a thunderstorm and overcast skies, I still managed to get completely burnt raw, and it's getting to the stage where we're afraid to use a flash on the camera for fear of UV exposure! Visiting the Snake Farm, which is part of the Red Cross as it's involved with developing anti-venom, was great fun ... read more

The journey to reach Lijiang, home of the Naxi Kingdom, a normadic Tibetan tribe (sounds like something from Lord of the Rings) was an ordeal, our overnight sleeper train pulled in at 5am. We're tired and we still have an 11 hour bus journey ahead of us. As we leave the station there is a cresendo of chants of "Lijiang, Lijiang", I make the cardinal error of nodding to one woman, before I know it there are four of them shoving brochures in my face, pulling my arms in all directions trying to get us onto their bus. I ditch the small woman I originally nodded at and follow the tall one that looks like she'll win if this does break into an inevitable fight. We arrive in Lijiang finally and are taken to our guesthouse, ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon June 2nd 2006

You want a cup of noodles or something? This is my fourth trip to HK, the first being on holiday with my parents aged 14 and the last three being work related. HK is an amazing city, vibrant and very much alive! Whenever I'm here I sink my teeth into Sushi like there's no tomorrow. If shopping is your thing, then look no further...from tailor made suits to Jade ornaments HK is the Bomb!!! I mean take for example today - Friday (03/06/06) the streets were drenched, very loud thunder storms like I've never heard before...yet the streets were packed with tourists and locals making their way either to work or a shopping plaza. Being under British Rule for quite some time almost everyone speaks english and rather good for that matter. Tip 1: Avoid Bait ... read more

Code Name: Mission CHAV It was a cold, wet, miserable Friday. Just like any other Friday. I phoned my special woman, 'sweet cheeks', to do a little job for me in the big city. She's a pretty face, cute ass, and a good little worker. The job was at a joint down town, they call it Burberry. A classy little joint with some damn good neck wear. The mission was to get past security and to 'touch the sheep', as they say. It was gonna be a tough one but I knew 'sweet cheeks' had it in her. At precisely 1300 hours I made the call and as arranged 'sweet cheeks' was there right on cue. It was the usual affair, you know the type - this message will self destruct yadda yadda yadda.... Then 'sweet ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta June 2nd 2006

So much has happened since I last wrote, it's hard to keep up. I know I have to post these things more frequently, but lately it's been so busy and I also like to have some good photos to put on here before posting. Luckily, we went to Ko Lanta, an island in the Krabi province of Thailand, last weekend and we got some pictures there. This was our 3rd time to the Krabi Province, which is on the West coast of Thailand on the Andaman sea, but our first time to Ko Lanta. Despite this being the rainy season, we had beautiful weather there. Ko Lanta is extremely quiet and not as developed for tourism as some other places, but has quite a decent sized Thai population with schools and a hospital, though the beaches ... read more

Inle Lake, a 20km long puddle, seems a lot smaller than it is. I hired a boat with Peter and Marion and within minutes we had arrived at the lake, but were motoring down a channel bordered at each side by floating vegetable gardens. The channel, which is a river that has been dredged into a channel, is a strong dark crimson from the mud, but on entering the lake, quickly becomes clear as the floating veges absorb the nutrients from the water. Just as well if you are one of the residents living on the lake. We headed slowly across the lake towards one of the markets (there are several markets which all follow a five day rotating schedule - complicated for those of us living a seven day week, but logical for farmers and ... read more

Asia » Japan » Osaka June 2nd 2006

Checked out Osaka today. I have to admit some of the recommended places there kind of suck. Recommended by the city guides were the Floating garden, which isn't a garden at all, and the aqua-liner riverboat tour. The riverboat tour sucked so bad I just decided to go to sleep on the bench, at least it was a comfortable if expensive nap. The hanging garden is really just a balcony that is on like the 44th floor or something. I guess the view was nice, but as a person who likes plants I was kind of dissapointed. I was expecting a really cool garden at the top of the building. All in all it was ok. So I was getting kind of bored with Osaka thenwent to the food/shopping district. All I can say is wow!! That ... read more
