Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China March 12th 2007

Well, now we’ve been to The Great Wall and lived to tell about it. The first day we walked down from the hotel(about 3/4 of a mile), but decided we would wait until Saturday to actually climb it. In Badoling, the wall has been rebuilt for people to be able to walk on it. It is hard to imagine that they have 4500 miles of it. We could see some of it that had not been restored and it was quite overgrown and a lot of broken stones. Our hotel called “the Commune” was wonderful and tempted us into breaking a promise we had made to eat only Chinese food while we were here. One look at the western menu with New Zealand rack of Lamb and New Zealand Anchor butter and we forgot all about ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Jeollanam-do » Yeosu March 12th 2007

And so, another semester begins. Spring is gradually coming to Yeosu. Well, I use the word "gradually" in quite a liberal way-- it's actually pretty cold outside right now, but the trees are just beginning to bud and, well, two weeks ago it was warm. Unfortunately, a cold snap hit again, and it's currently back to winter weather. Things are going well at school. There is a new foreign teacher here, and it's been great showing her around and helping her out. It's also been good to have someone to regularly speak English with. To top it all off, it's also lowered the number of classes I teach this semester to 13! So, I have 13 classes a week-- 9 classes of third-year students, and 4 classes of second-year students. I'm really excited to be teaching ... read more

Asia » Singapore March 12th 2007

Singapore airlines knows how to treat its customers so well. At checkin they took care of our bags so we didn't have to worry about them during our lay over. Then later when we boarded our flight they welcome you with hot face cloths after everyone is seated. Such a treat! They served us the entire flight with food and beverages, you name it we were treated like first class only with out the price tag. We were in the air for I think 19hrs with a 1hr stopover in Korea. We arrived in Singapore at 11:30pm Mar. 11 and fly out again this evening( Mar. 12) at 9pm and were off to India. Today has been a day of hanging out and soaking up the culture which has been most interesting. I spyed the roof ... read more

I know the Hong Kong entry was a little lite on the ground. This website was proving difficult to access and when I finally got on I had 10 minutes on a palm pilot at the airport. This is the extended version: Tuesday Touched down in the afternoon and made our way across town on the airport express and the MTR (underground). A very nice, clean easy to use system. No language problems (yet). Got to the Ibis (same as every other Ibis) and crashed out. Wednesday Woke up about 3am. Great. Managed to get back to sleep about 7 until 10. Checked out then made our way across town to the Vietnamese Embassy to apply for Visa. Had a go on the Star ferry from HK to Kowloon then found our first hostel. The room ... read more

Left KL and the very helpful Equator staff, for a two hour bus ride to the historic maritime town of Malacca (Malaka). The town has a colourful past and has been influenced by numerous cultures - including the Malays, Portuguese-Eurasians, Chinese and Indians, with Portuguese, Dutch and British influenced architecture. We are staying in a cheap but clean hostel called the 'Travellers Lodge', which has a great roof terrace overlooking a view of the sea. We enjoyed an Indonesian style lunch, before heading off to the city centre. We first noticed a lot of bicycles covered with umbrellas, tinsel and flowers - a common method of transport for tourists! We were very surprised with the amount of tourists visiting the town. Then we had a look at St Paul's church, Christ church and saw a huge ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon March 12th 2007

Well, having been in Hong Kong 5 days now, I'm slowly getting used to just how busy the place is. It's relentless, there doesn't seem to be a place where a crowd of people aren't!! I can't count how many times I've been offered suits and watches by people on the street, every other step they seem to be in your face! As of now I think we've seen everything worth seeing in Hong Kong, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which is a story that has dogged my time here. Unfortunately eating had become a real problem since being ill on the plane, so after three days of vomiting up whatever I'd eaten(delightful image!), I decided to go see a doctor. After a three hour wait, I got to see him, and he gave me some ... read more

Asia » Vietnam March 12th 2007

Hello to all. As many of you know we are home safe and sound as of March 1. Vietnam was a trip worth while. A few rough spots and times where I wanted to run away from the kids but over all there are no regrets. Happy we went and happy we took the kids. It is so cool when Vietnam, temples, pagodas and durian fruit are part of your 3 year olds vocabulary. Last thoughts. - Vietnam is worth doing on your own. A tour group would suck and you would miss so much. - get acidopholous from the health food store before you go and take daily. I firmly believe that is why none of us got stomach problems. Six weeks and five people and no days confined to a room close to the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ao Nang March 12th 2007

It's been quite a while since my last entry. We've already been in Thailand for 10 days now and I must say I'm getting used to living out of a backbag. This is what we've done since we left Bangkok: We took a cab to visit my dad's cousin. He's married to a Thai woman. They live in a small village between Bangkok and Kanchanaburi. They've built a beautiful house and we had the pleasure to stay there for a couple of days. It was so relaxing to be in the country side again after bustling Bangkok. My dad's cousin has been living in Thailand for a couple of years already and he told us a lot about the culture and the Thai way of living. I even found out why Thai people always do say ... read more
