Hey all! I'm going to be "quick" Saigon has been wonderful. The border crossing was surprisingly smooth and we found a really nice place to stay that is not a large backpacker hostel (there are 5 rooms and we are the only people staying there right now), which is a very nice change from Cambodia. I don't have much time here, so I'm not going to see the Cu Chi tunnels, which I really wanted to do, but I know I'll be back so that's just something I'll have to put off until next time. Today I went to the War Crimes Museum, which has surprisingly graffic photos on display as well as some commentary. It was great to visit and I'm really glad I went, but it was difficult material to say the least. Had ... read more

Breakfast at Son Xanh Blue River Restaurant. There were two guys there who were already drinking beer at 7AM! Then we got a bus to Hue, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stopped at Marble Mountain along the way. There is a cave there, but we didn’t feel like paying the admission fee and racing up to the cave and back to the bus in 15 minutes. The bus stopped right in front of Phu An Hotel and there were touts that got on the bus to drum up business. The place was nice, so we stayed. We had lunch at Omar Khayyam’s Indian Restaurant. Then we walked to The Citadel and toured the Forbidden Purple City, which follows the same layout as the Forbidden City in Beijing. Much of the Purple City was ... read more

Got a lot of catching up to do. Well here it goes! We started our trip in Northern Vietnam in the city of Hanoi. Hanoi is a strange city...The way of life didnt quite make sense, and with a city that is extremely fast paced you can only imagine how hectic it gets. In the core of downtown Hanoi, the busiest intersection, had NO method of controlling traffic. Picture this: About 75-100 scooters trying to go through the same intersection; some turning, others going straight..buses driving full speed, while the people on the scooters swerve to avoid getting hit...pedestrians crossing not even looking at the traffic. And the only time they come to a complete stop is to have a chat with a friend on another scooter, they do not ever stop, instead slowing down or ... read more

Vietnam has really not been treating me very well. Maybe I just hadn't realized how great I had it in Thailand and Laos (I knew I had it pretty good mind you) cause Vietnam has certainly been a struggle. It's particularly frustrating because I kind of like it and am considering extending my time here a little. I went north to Sapa for two days. The train ride up was okay except for getting in at 5am. The area around Sapa certainly did not disappoint with an incredable view (I took sooooo many pictures) but the town itself was not the serene escape I had hoped for. I knew it was busier on the weekends but I thought it would be interesting to see the villagers that come into town for the markets from all around ... read more

Got up early again and had breakfast at a local street stall. Pointing and hand motions have become a common way for us to get food! Went on a day trip to My Son, the Cham ruins about 40km from Hoi An, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cham are one of the indigenous peoples of Vietnam, descended from the kingdom of Champa. When we arrived, a traditional Cham dance was already underway, so we watched the rest of it and then started a tour of the complex. Unfortunately, much of the complex was destroyed by bombings and there were even visible bomb craters. There seems to be reminders of the war everywhere we went. We took a boat back to Hoi An, stopping at a village where they make boats and furniture. Another bad ... read more

2nd - 3rd April Well I don't know what happened but we have definitely lost a day somewhere because we arrived in Hanoi on the 1st April. We think we lost it in Vang Vieng or maybe we got some of the earlier dates mixed up. Anyway back to Nam. We had our first full day in Hanoi and man it is crazy. The traffic and the motorbikes never stop. Everyone uses their horns repeatedly, all the time, over and over again. It is all you can hear all day and all night. Crossing the road is interesting as well. The best way is to take one step at a time and let the bikes, which look like they are coming straight for you, swerve past you at the last minute. You get used to it ... read more

The trip through Vietnam had thus far taken us through Saigon, Dalat, and wound up between the Central Highlands with the Easy Riders. From the tranquility of the open road, we found ourselves once again on the tourist trail. After five days of seeing only my companions and the local people en route; the sheer amount of bodies, especially travelers, in Hoi An slapped me back into life. Those motorbikes, the Easy Riders, the open road, I could have continued like that for weeks, even months. Still, Hoi An was there to be explored, probed, and I felt guilty that my mind was not giving her the attention she deserved. Hoi An is a beautiful little port town, with low, traditional housing, and leafy lanes. Renowned for being a tailor’s town, no not a sailor’s town, ... read more

Got up at 4AM, checked out of the hotel, and got a taxi to the airport. The flight to Da Nang was about 45 minutes. If we would’ve taken a bus it would be about 12-14 hours. Got a taxi to Hoi An, another 45 minutes. We checked into the Thuy Duong I Hotel and got breakfast at Nha Hang Quang Thang. Felicia wanted to get some clothes made, so we went to the tailor at 36 Le Loi. Felicia picked out some clothes from a catalogue, the fabrics, got measured, and they told us to come back at 6PM for the first fitting. Todd had two linen shirts made. Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you have to buy a ticket to see the main sites in the town, which is a ... read more

Ahhhh, Vietnam!! Another excuse for why we're so behind on the blogging - we didn't want to distract y'all from doing your taxes! That's really the lamest one, yet, isn't it? Anyhoo ... We touched down on March the 22nd in Hanoi and quickly realized we didn't have enough time to soak it all in. From the city sights to the hopping art scene, to the relatively easy travel, Hanoi, and more broadly, Vietnam, is a great place to travel. It's just at that point right now when the tourism industry is exploding so they are really figuring out how to cater to us, but it isn't so far gone that it seems too much like Disneyland. Following much of the sage advice that some of you gave us (shout out to Judy & Mark, Henry ... read more

Trusting my gut over the years has been challenging, it usually defies logic, and very often refuses to conform to what would seem to be normal and rational, but it has always chosen the best paths for me, even if I can’t see it at the time. I need to say this first, because I am still amazed how a continuing chain of gut decisions along with dozens of “coincidences” had lead me Monday morning to sit at the hotel lobby internet next to Karen Leonard. I had a strong feeling to come to Vietnam, to fly to Da Nang, to come to Hoi An, even a strong feeling to choose this hotel. I wanted to volunteer in this town, no particular reason why, just gut feelings. I spent last week researching what opportunities are around. ... read more
