Got up early to get to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum before it closed at 11:30AM. We waited in a huge line for over an hour, but it actually moved surprisingly fast. Once you get to the tomb entrance, they really hustle you through. It was kind of weird to see someone in a suspended state on display in a glass case. We walked around the grounds, saw the Presidential Palace (not open to the public), then Ho Chi Minh’s house, and then his stilt house. Last stop was the One Pillar Pagoda, which is just what it sounds like—a little pagoda up on one pillar. We walked to the B-52 Memorial—down an alley into a residential area, there’s a little lake with the wreckage of an American B-52 sticking out of the water. It was ... read more

Sharing a taxi with a guy from London, we crossed the border into Viet Nam at the southern most crossing, which doesnt see many tourists. We had to deal with the local transport 'Mafia' controlling the border town, who make it very difficult and expensive to travel any distance. We ended up paying a couple of farmers 10USD to take us and and our friend the 35km on their wagon full of rice sacks pulled by a single motorbike. Border crossings seem to be the most 'interesting' parts of the journey! As many of the locals don't get to see too many travellers like ourselves, we were a bit of a novelty. We received many friendly smiles, waves and 'hello's, we probably draw a bit more attention to ourselves considering our means of transport. Staying one ... read more

Hi everyone - I'm in Hoi An now. Spent a couple days here, and I'm leaving this afternoon for Hue, which is just a few hours North. Hoi An is a small coastal town. Nice town, nice architecture, nice beach, etc. It's known for it's clothing shops, and about every other shop is a clothing store that will make a custom suit for $35 - not exactly what I'm looking for these days... Anyway, I've been hanging out with a couple brits and an american that I met on the bus here and we've had a great time and are all moving up to Hue together. It's difficult to get off the beaten path in Vietnam, but I've been looking for an alternate way to get from Hue to Hanoi - possibly by motorbike. Hopefully that ... read more

After thoroughly enjoying my time in Hue, I jumped on a bus bound for Hoi An. Of course, as this was merely a 4 hour ride, the bus was an air conditioned liner and I had an open seat next to me. The ride was uneventful, except for when we stopped for lunch. I wandered down a nearby driveway, which led to a lake that greeted me with absolutely stunning view. In the background lush rugged hills framed a large calm lake that lay in the foreground. I wandered down a little beach, that took me past a number of upturned boats. The beach appeared to be a docking station because there were about 30 boats moored in the vicinity and a ways out in the lake were some covered platforms built on stilts. Topping off ... read more

Hanoi is crazy! There are cars and people and motos and dogs and bikes and stuff EVERYWHERE!! It seemed even busier and crazier than HCM and all cramped into the tiny little alleys of the old quarter. Luckily for us we had a neat little room up a million and one stairs with a view over the rooftops, it was great. Our couple of days in Hanoi were spent catching up on some chores and doing a little bit of sight seeing. We loved wandering round Hoan Kiem Lake in the centre of the Old Quarter and visiting the picturesque island temple which sits in the middle. It was particularly pretty all lit up at night. The old sof the Chinatown area were great, beautiful and wooden, though lacking the charm of those in Hoi An. ... read more

Up early, had breakfast, checked out, and got the bus back to the boat (different boat this time). It was foggy and rainy, which made the ride back through Ha Long Bay even more majestic. It was a long bus ride back to Hanoi. Got back to Hanoi, checked into Dong A Hotel with the promise of a room next door for the next 2 nights at the nicer Nam Hai 2 Hotel. Had drinks at Half Man, Half Noodle and then Le Maquis—very cool little hole-in-the-wall bar popular with French expats. Went to Bittet for dinner, a place specializing in French biftec. It was full of locals, but the food was just okay.... read more

8th - 10th April After arriving in from Sapa on the night train very early in the morning, We had a couple of hours to kill with some super strong coffee before we jumped on our three day tour of Halong Bay. We were very sceptical about the whole tour thing but just didn't have time to sort it out ourselves like we did in Sapa and our scepticism was well founded. Here is Pete's very special super short summary of Halong Bay "I'm a bit disappointed really. its been totally fucked by tourism. there’s hundreds of boats out all day every day, all of which dump their sewage in the water. The water stinks of shit and when they asked if we wanted to swim I recalled the floaters I’d seen bobbing past and respectfully ... read more

Greetings to all...apologies for the length of time between entries - life here is not so new anymore, and thus it's difficult to feel inspired to sum it all up. That being said, there have still been a few noteworthy moments: first and foremost, my house was burgled a two weeks or so ago. We had an extreme hot spell for two weeks (actually, it's supposed to last appx two months or so, but weather's been off this year, and thus what heat we've experienced has been intense, but brief. It's already rained a few times this week, and the dry season is supposed to last until the end of MAy). Anyway, during the hot spell, Marta had a friend from abroad visiting, and they were both sleeping in her bed - the room got quite ... read more

So we went to the Fine Arts Museum and the Madarin Place (cannot remember what it's called). Both interesting, but not so memorable. However, the restaurant for lunch was fun. Called Brother's Cafe, it is chic oriental. The food was ok - buffet - cannot be compared at all to Biscoti. I bought a linen shirt buy Khaisilk - which also has a shop in the Paragon, Bangkok. Then the big moment came when we went back to get the tray and box. Got the price down to US$230 for the tray and US$100 for the box. These are our personal souvenirs of Vietnam, to be entered into our collection. We packed tonight, getting ready for our 0630 flight to Hue. Had to get up at 0415 - deadly.... read more

Vietnam We have been in Vietnam for a month now, although we have seen a good few things we've really liked we are ready to move on. Vietnam is very westernised and didn't appeal to us unlike the other South East Asian countries we've been through. Part of this could be due to looking forward to Borneo, meeting up with friends from home, and South Africa before we get home in a month!!! We started our trip in Ho Chi Minh City, where I dont think we did it justice, but we chilled out for a few days and caught up with Carole and Marie, (friends we'd previously met in Laos) and saw some of the horrors of Agent Orange in the war remnants museum. We also saw the internationally recognised photograph named "The Girl ... read more
