I'm sitting in the Internet lounge of my Hotel Lobby. We paid $10 to stay here tonight. The room looks almost exactly the same as the $50 room we paid the other night. They love ripping off the foreigners here. Anyhow, Jason and I just got back from Halong Bay today. It was definitely one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. We floated around in our boat, surrounded by 1969 different islands. Jason jumped off the story boat and into the bay waters. We met some very cool, and well travelled seamates. It's incredible how many people out there just quit their jobs and travel the world for 6 months at a time. There was the New Yorker girl who quit her finance job to travel around asia for a few months, the ... read more

Finally, we left Bangkok for Hanoi. The flight took only an hour and 50 minutes. The guesthouse arranged a taxi to collect us at the airport (US$10) and it was very convenient. The drive took one hour to reach the guesthouse which was more or less a converted shophouse. Cloudy, humid, and cool, Hanoi is a pleasant city. Most people motorbike around, honking at everything they see. There are Toyotas, Daewoos, and a few Mercedez. Crossing the streets require a lot of care, but it's not as dangerous as it looks. So far, everyone we encoutered have been pleasant, which was surprising as we heard so much bad things about Vietnamese. We find people here charming, helpful and full of smiles. And things are cheap here, cheaper than Bangkok. We are told that most products in ... read more

Went on a DMZ Tour by bus from Hue. Very long bus ride, crossed over the 17th Parallel into the former North Vietnam. Stopped for pictures. The Vinh Moc Tunnels were really cool. These tunnels were used by villagers (not VC) in the area to live in and hide from the bombings. The tour guide said that 17 babies were born during this time. Each family of 4 had a little nook for their room that was about 3 feet wide and 4 feet deep. Unlike the Cu Chi tunnels these were quite big and easy to maneuver (though they had been expanded to accommodate large Western tourists). The tunnels escape route leads right onto the beach. Passed the Doc Mieu Firebase and stopped to take pictures of the “Rockpile,” a large hill used by US ... read more

Tam (pronounced TUM) is 17 and joined Karen’s outreach program for teens about 3 months ago. But it was only about one month into the program when he was in a serious motorbike accident. The accident had put him into a coma for 2 weeks, and left him with severe head injuries that required a series of neuro-operations. Remarkably, he is walking around today. But this is not the end of a happy story. I say remarkably because the first problem is the medical facilities here, well, they suck. And the operation was done without putting half his skull back into his head, so he is walking around without it until a second operation in one month. Tam’s family has no money and could not/cannot afford an operation. A family of 8 live together along the ... read more

Hue is an interesting city, with the Perfume River neatly disecting the city and as the former capitol of the counrty, the heart of the city surrounded by a defensive fortifation consisting of an enormous brick wall that runs a total of 6 miles around. On top of all this, is a fortified citadel is a walled off area within the walled of area that encloses several acres. All in all, the city provides ample fair for just nosing about. On my first day spent my time wandering the streets and poking around some fairly interesting museums. The following day, on the recommendation of some friends, I bought a ticket to the citadel. The city of Hue was fiercly contested in the Vietnam War, and as a result of the heavy bombing a large part of ... read more

Went on the Perfume River boat tour. Stopped at Thien Mu Pagoda, and three major mausoleums of past kings—Tu Duc, Kai Dinh, and Minh Mang. The kings built their mausoleums when they were still alive and used them as retreats. Also stopped at Hon Chen Temple. Lunch on the boat (better than the last boat lunch, but not great). Got back to Hue and walked over to the other side of the river. We tried to find a couple small pagodas, then crossed to the moat into the Citadel. A cyclo driver offered to take us around the Citadel, so we hopped in and went on a leisurely one-hour circuit tour. He dropped us off where we started and we headed to a bia hoi place nearby. There were a couple of Vietnamese guys drinking at ... read more

4th - 7th April Having arrived in Lao Cai train station we got a bus to Sapa and found a bargain of a room. They dropped us off at a new hotel and because they were so desperate for customers they halved the price of the room. We got a brand new, really nice room in a hotel with an amazing view overlooking the valley for $6! Sweet. Today was really just about getting to know Sapa and finding the right trek. We wanted to find a trek that would take us to the middle of no where and we explained that we didn't want to see another tourist for 3 days. We eventually found a place offering this and took it. After which we climbed this rather large hill that looks over the valley ... read more

Cynthia's POV: We boarded onto a Korean airline flight heading to the city of Hanoi. Usually when I go to an Asian country, there's usually a personal video screen to watch movies and play video games on, but as it turns out, the international flights leaving San Francisco does not contain the video screens!! Damn those Koreans!! Although I didn't get to watch my own personal movies, I did get to watch the pre-selected ones, which included Seoul rappers serenading their asian girlfriends, and a funny Korean movie about a woman doctor falling in love with a country bumpkin athlete. Even though I didn't get my movies, I did get to eat some Bimbim Bap on the plane though. We arrived in Hanoi around 1130pm. Since we didn't have any Vietnamese currency, known as the ... read more

Leaving Nha Trang at some ridiculous time of the morning (Ok it was scheduled to leave early but didn't) we spent over 12 hours stuck on a bus with a driver with smelly feet to reach Hoi An. Actually, it wasn't that bad and the countryside made it all worthwhile. Arriving in Hoi An it seemed like every foreign tourist had converged on the City with most hostels and guesthouses full or charging inane prices. After an hour or two wandering round (lucky we had all the beautiful lanterns to light our way) we did manage to find a place and come morning were moved to an even nicer room with a great view over the rooftops. The best of Hoi An was just wandering round the Old Town, checking out the temples, assembly halls, and ... read more
