It’s been a while now since I was in Sapa or at least it seems like it although it’s only been a week. So much has happened since getting to Hanoi. However, I want to talk about Sapa before getting on to the rest. I got up to Sapa after crossing the border from China at Lao Cai on June 1st and I spent three days just wandering around the area and getting used to Vietnam. The highlight was on the second day, when I rented a motorbike and spent the riding through the hills past water falls and small villages, but also down into the valley to see some of the tribal villages of the Hmong and Dzao people. Sapa is only 50 kilometers or so away from the Chinese border, up in the mountains. ... read more

Hi All, I had an eventful day yesterday, grouped up with 3 other people to rent a car (+ driver) to visit some sights in Tay Ninh Province. Tay Ningh is about 100km NW of HCMC and it is appearently the hottest province in the country. We started the day by visiting CuChui tunnels which have been in existance for about 50 years, first being used to thwart French re-colonization attemps after the war and later on as resistance to US-backed Saigon troops. The tunnels were ingenious in resisting various attacks by US which has much greater firepower as well as technology. Moving on, we went to the Co Dai Holy See which is the Vatican of CoDaism. CoDaism is a fusion of religious philosphies of the East and the West including Buddisim, Confucianism, Taoism, Christainity ... read more

We had to spend 4 days in Hanoi to await our visa extensions - yes, that's how long it take and it costs USD20 each, and you have to go through your guesthouse - there is no option to arrange it directly with Immigration. So we thought we'd make the most of it and explore by foot, as is our wont. Hanoi is a lovely city with a beautiful lake and parks - some of them you need to pay an entrance fee to enter. We found sanctuary from the noisy streets in a little roof terrace restaurant whose staff we befriended over the few days we were there (Ning Bia). It was a great place to watch the daily life on the street in Hanoi - I was mesmerised one afternoon watching the motorbikes carrying ... read more

The best part about the flight from Danang to Ho Chi Minh City apart from the fact that it was to save 24 hours of travel by fridge, was the onboard camera attached to the nose of the plane. Descending onto the metropolis of Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City (It is still called by both names) you could see on the screen bright white lights dotted with neon interludes stretching out onto the horizon - enough to make you feel a tad apprehensive especially after arriving straight from your very own 30km private stretch of deserted white sands. Hoa had advised us to head straight to 'Kim Cafe' and to send a couple of us out on a recce from there to find somewhere to stay, which we did, and found a fantastic place, the ... read more

Spit. Roasted. Dog. No. I couldn't believe it either..so much for stereotypes not living up to reality..drifting along the narrow channels of the delta region near Can Tho brought a thousands sights but its this one that my mind keeps returning to and makes me blurt out at not entirely appropriate times 'can't believe we saw dog bbq!'. smelled damn good btw. needless to say it wasn't another addition to my list of new food i've experimented with... 5:30am sunrise over the Mekong chilled me out to the point i nearly lolled over the side of the tiny wooden boat we had commandeered...and the floating markets with their barges packed to the hilt with thousands of pineapples, melons, and unidentifyable fruit had my mouth watering... even at that time the river was teeming with life...people ... read more

Well, well, since there were no negative comments I have once again been given the privledge of writing a second blog--thank you all very much. Heidi did have her doubts before I sent the one about Halong Bay :) I have recovered from my bout of food poisioning- after one month of travelling and not really caring in what I ate I was bound to get it at some stage, unfortunately it was when we had to spend a day on the back of a motorbike. A day of clenched bum checks and being worried about vomiting down the back of the guy driving the motorbike is not cool. Once again- IT IS NOT COOL! Currently, I am sitting in an A/C internet cafe in the heart of Hoi An, Heidi is sitting next to me, ... read more

More pics from HCMC, mostly from the War Remanants museum. There were alot of disturbing pictures that capturing them on my digicam won't do them justice so I opted rather remember them in my mind where it is much more alive. So just happy pictures (mostly)... read more

That's right ladies and gentlemen... that is what I am right now - a Money MACHINE!!! Forget everything I said about having a sweet, laid back life in Vietnam!!! I have a new job! I left ILA and have started teaching at a bilingual kindergarten! It's absollutely great! I don't teach many hours but my timetable is 40 hours a week (9-5), so I get paid to plan (something not included at ILA) and I'm teaching adoreable 4-5 year olds! I'm also getting paid more at this new school which, is always, welcomed! On top of that I have been tutoring my 2 Korean boys 3 nights a week and I've also taken on one 2 hour class on Saturday and Sunday morning! That's right - the girl who can't wait to be retired is working ... read more

Sunday 11th June Paul - A late night once again with Argentina Vs Ivory Coast getting a watch. Reasonable game, much better than England Vs Paraguay. Even the Vietnamese were not impressed with the English, one guy describing them as "fucking horrible, I betted 20,000 dong on them to win by more than two!". Pretty much spot on for someone who's first language definately isn't English. Peter Crouch should not be in the team for the next game, he just cannot play at International Level. And Lampard and Gerrard as a centre midfield partnership just does not work but I think Sven is oblivious to this. Anyway... Seems like Vietnam is completely football crazy! Big screens on the beach and everyone seems to be playing football at every opportunity.Which makes for a cracking atmosphere for ... read more

What's up! After a couple of day trips in and around Saigon to see all the touristy stuff, we jumped a (terrrrrible) night bus to Nha Trang, and have been chilling out for a few days, planning the next move. Nha Trang caught me a bit off guard. I knew that it's the most popular municipal beach in Vietnam, for both foreigners and Vietnamese people, but I was still blown away by how crowded it was when we arrived. The beach was PACKED with people. Granted it was a Saturday and the crowds have since thinned out, but I was still stunned to see how many people were on the beach. It's a little too busy for my tastes, so we've booked a short bus trip to Mui Ne, a more laid back beach with much ... read more
