Hey all, I know that I only updated the blog yesterday, but the new pictures that I took today just had to be posted. This morning at 4:00am I caught a jeep out of town, and headed for the sand dunes -- the landscape that this part of Vietnam is most famous for. I guess having seen desert in Egypt, I wasn't expecting too much, but I was blown away. Only 20 or 30 minutes drive from the ocean and suddenly you find yourself in the middle of these crazy dunes -- once you start climbing into them, it would be easy to imagine yourself in the middle of a desert with no way out. There are red and white sand dunes, surprisingly the latter of which were most impressive. I could have easily spent all ... read more

So the hard sleeper wasn't SO bad. We shared it with Sophie's friend Magnus and 3 other vietnamese men. They were very friendly and it always makes for a more interesting experience when you do as the romans do. One of the men rocked out to Magnus' discman most of the evening... pretty funny stuff. I woke up to find two young boys who had clearly just been watching me sleep through the barred window. They were excited now that this strange white creature was up and moving and so continued to watch and stare as I get up, pack... it would have been really creepy if they weren't only 8 or 9 years old. They didn't leave until their parents called them off the train. We followed and it was only 15 minutes into the ... read more

Saturday 17th June Paul - Me again, Laura's asleep so she's not writing todays either. If you want some Laura action then leave a comment at the end of the blog entitled "Let Laura write something Paul you git!" I forget what we did this morning but I remember staying up late and watching the football as usual. The Ozzies didn't want a cultural experience today so we went... to the water park! Can't beat a day spent splashing around the park especially at those prices. In the races down the slides I managed to finish second to Pete, HOWEVER a recent drugs test has since reversed those results! In the evening we haggled a Cambodian guidebook down to dirt cheap (seriously it's probably more expensive to buy dirt in England than it was to ... read more

Well I'm done with Australia, lovely as it was. Now for new, unfamiliar pastures where people speak an unfamiliar tongue (English, apparently) and I develop a new career as a pidgeon. I walk out of the airport and load of drivers pass me around and try to convince me that their taxi ride is the best on offer and probably rip me off (due to my feeble attempts at haggling), before dropping me off at whichever hotel is paying him most. Walking down the street, I am given unsolicited offers for rides, drugs, sex and even (god forgive me) food in exchange for my pocket money (actually, that's not too different to Sydney). I 'm in a smoggy city and crossing the road takes a lot of consideration. I love this place! I actually have my ... read more

We woke up this morning at 6:30 to the symphony of car horns, motors, and heat . Our room faces a set of internal stairwells, our bathroom window overlooks a side street. It is a bright day outside. SUVs mingle with weary walkers carrying heavy burdens. The topic of conversation between the eight of us here is how hot it is and how to combat the heat. Our hair is up. Our make-up is limited. Our water bottles in tow. Cold beers don't stay cold for long. They fizzle down to a luke warm temperature ten minutes into our meal. Our glowing faces are a mixture of sweat and excitement. Our flight yesterday was long. We learned the "courtesy bell" inside bathroom stalls at the Seoul International Airport makes flushing noises to cover up less appropriate ... read more

Dear all, Well, since my last update I have managed to cram a lot of things in -- the usual touristy sightseeing, some moving from place to place, and, believe it or not, even a little beach time. I won't bore you with all of the details, but I'll mention a few of the more... ahem... action packed happenings! To begin with, and also as a warning to any people who might be reading this blog prior to venturing into Vietnam, I'll start with the bus trips. In my experience, and as far as I can tell from other backpackers, in most peoples' experience, these are the worst parts about Vietnam. Picture a cross-Canada Greyhound bus. Now, make the seats smaller and more squished together, take away the toilet, make the aisle about half as wide ... read more

Colin writing again (sorry kristy fans.....she's always busy reading emails....apparenly i'm not as popular at home) We feel bad that we have not been updating the blog with our adventures from the last 2 weeks here in Vietnam, but finding internet cafes that are not sweat boxes with really slow connections has been a challenge. Presently we are in the outdoors, and its 10pm, so cooling off abit, so i can stand to write a few quick words. Sorry, no pics for now, too much work. Hopefully soon. After leaving Hanoi (in the North) we took a bus to Hue. It was one of those adventures that my writing is not worthy to cover. We'll have a good story for when we get home. But...the not so quick of it....13 hours....7pm start.....broken air con.....tiny seats......people sleeping ... read more

A good couple of days in Nha Trang...relaxing on the beach, Mama Linh's Boat Tour, and no humidity! We've attached a map of a journey thus far, both Thailand and Vietnam. (Sorry, no city names) We survived the long overnight bus ride from Hoi An. Dan found some sleeping pills that literally made his eyelids glue shut...or so he says! I think I may need to indulge in them myself for the ride we'll do tonight to Saigon. Besides the minor mechanical problems early on, the bus was fine. The only thing we couldn't figure out was why the driver kept beeping his horn as he drove down the road at 3am, no other cars or bikes in sight...maybe he was doing it to keep himself awake? We're staying at the Perfume Grass Hotel, very nice, ... read more
