This is my last blog for Vietnam…well, because we are not even in Vietnam anymore. Jackie and I are now in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and have been for a few days. So, I think the easiest way to update everyone is to go backwards from here. We arrived in Phnom Penh having taken a 3day/2 night tour of the Mekong Delta. I keep falling into the trap of taking organized tours, mainly because they don’t require as much work on my part and are usually cheaper too. The problem comes in on the corners the tour company cut to make extra money. For instance, the hotel on the second night of the tour was a complete dump with air vents that opened onto the lobby, which allowed us to hear everything from outside the room and ... read more

Hanoi isn't really the most appealing of cities - it's really big, traffic is absolutely chaotic with moto-cyclos jetting all over the place, no pedestrian crossings (just a get out and hope for the best attitude!), and in wet season, grey and dreary. With this in mind, we organised activities outside the city as soon as possible! And so we hit off to Sa Pa for a 3day hiking trek in the very north of Vietnam....and the day started well with a fight between 2 taxi drivers vying for business outside the cafe as we had breakfast. With fists and heads flying (at one stage, one taxi driver pulled out an iron bar from under his seat to attack the other one!) the crowd (including one policeman under no rush to break up the melee) ooohed ... read more

Our new, much reduced group departed Hanoi by minibus this morning & headed to the ferry which took us to Cat Ba Island. A nap in the afternoon set me right for pizza & beer, followed by more beer whilst watching the Australia versus Italy soccer game at the Koala bar. Unfortunatley Italy won because of a ridiculous penalty right on full time, but it was a good game none the less. Before settling on the Kiwi Bar for dinner, we were actually looking for 'The Flightless Bird,' a restaurant owned by New Zealanders, recommended to Snow by other travellers. After walking to the end of the Esplanade with no luck, we were halfway back when we witnessed a sickening accident. This little boy rode his push bike right into the path of a motorcyclist. They ... read more

Hi everyone sorry it has been awhile since any updates but the internet here is very average. We arrived in Nha Trang and it is just perfect, if you imagine a tropical isalnd that is what it is like, crystal clear water, reefs and the best fish you have seen. I went scuba diving and it was fantastic the best thing I have done here yet, got to pat a Moray eel, I wanted to do it again but time wouldnt allow it. We are staying it a resort right on the beach, Ana Mandara the best service and location, you just sit on the beach under an umbrella and when you want somthing you wave a yellow flag and the waiters come running, I felt a bit guilty doing it the first time but you ... read more

"I'm allergic to fish, shellfish, peanuts and aubergines" was surely the most ridiculous sentence to come from the mouth of a man who had just signed up to join a cookery course in which every item on the itinerary contained one or more of these foods. And who's allergic to aubergines anyway...! Today I went on another cookery course. We started with a tour of the market (including the dubios delight of frogs skinned alive, still breathing - sick) before taking a boat downstream to the 'Red Bridge' restaurant and cookery school. The setup was good with a nice dining area, big enough cooking area and a comprehensive herb garden. The clientelle on the course were more Hyacith Bouquet than I was used to, but it was a refrshing change from scruffy backpackers. The group was ... read more

Arriving in Hoi An I found it to be charming and relaxing in spite of the very touristy gearing the whole place has. I had already decided to get a suit (or several made!) so the first thing I did was set out to find a tailor. The first few I looked at had dire fabrics, and prices so cheap as to raise suspicion. I eventually found one with a fabric I liked, and with sample goods that looked up to the mark. I orded one suit in some English Cashmere, got measured up, and left to contemplate how dangerous this town is when you have a credit card. Local Specialties Hoi An has many culinary specialties, and unlike other towns they really do shout about it! I bought a set lunch which introduced me the ... read more

After a small panic this morning because I'd discovered two missing travellers cheques valued at USD$200-, I visited the Ho Chi Min Mausoleum. It was very eerie to see a body that has been preserved for over 30 years. Apparently the Vietnamese ship him off to Russia every so often for some maintenance - you know, the odd nip & tuck... The group had lunch on Hoan Kiem Lake, then I headed back to the Hotel for a quiet afternoon spent following up on my missing cheques. Dad managed to sort it all out from home & AMEX are refunding the money, although I am mightly interested as to where they ended up. It's not like me to lose something like that & there wasn't much chance for anybody to steal them either. Had our new ... read more

Breakfast was at Koto's, which is a restaurant that takes in street kids & trains them in the hospitality industry to give them a future - because the government wont! The founder is an Aussie/Vietnamese, so I managed to get a fix of Vegemite on toast - it sure hit the spot. Vicki led us on a walking orientation of the Old French Quarter, which has streets dedicated to every old profession from silk making to metal work. Joining Leah, Lyn & Gabrielle, I spent a few hours walking around to the Opera House & museums of Revolution & History. We checked out St Josephs Church & I began feeling unwell, so headed back to the hotel for a rest. As this tour is also sold as two, two week trips, tonight was the final dinner ... read more

BRIEF ENGLISH INTRO: (Pequeña introducción en inglés para los que no hablan español --después vienen todos los posts en castellano.) Well, this is real Communism: selling, shopping, consumming, leisure, entrepreneuralism in its most active expression. Whatever uncle Ho Chi Minh is thinking now in the Marxist Nirvana, it is not that he succeded in finding the way to social-equality and proletariat-dictatorship. He did find the way to self-determination, that goal he did reach it indeed. There are so many stories of war here, of unbelievable massacres commited by the invaders and big fights. The most interesting stories, nevertheless, lie in this people's resistance capacity, their determination to succeed no matter how many sacrifices and how much suffering, their dynamic approach to reconstruction and life pursuing, and maybe the most impressive of their caractheristics:... read more

The vomit bus Today I took a coach from Dalat to Nha Trang. Unfortunately the slighly (extremely) agressive driving and the very (VERY!) winding roads caused an almost constant stream of passengers to be coachsick. The actual effect was comical, as no sooner had the sound of one persons retching finished but another seemed to start. Thank god they were all down the front tho, while I was sat safely at the back! Vietnamese Coffee With very few exceptions vietnamese coffee is served VERY stong, brewed in a cup top filter. Ask for it white and a third of the cup is taken up with condensed milk. You only get a small cup, but thats enough. This stuff is strong, and very sickly. Black coffee is only for the real coffee lovers - and you may ... read more
