Took a tuk-tuk to Capitol to catch our bus to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Unlike our previous experiences taking buses, it left right on time. The border crossing at Moc Bai was uneventful and easy. About an hour later we were in HCMC, the bus stopped right on the main tourist drag, Pham Ngu Lao. Right when we got off the bus a woman greeted us touting the availability of rooms in her guesthouse. So we thought why not and went to take a look, if this placed turned out to be okay, it would beat walking around searching. She led us into this alley off the main drag to My My Art Hotel. It was pretty cute, she said that it was only 5 months old…who knows. It was clean and pretty reasonably priced ... read more

Today we did the obligatory trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels. Though packed with propoganda it was quite interesting and the traps that the locals made to use against the Americans were unashamedly brutal. Crawling through the tunnels was obviously the highlight, though in a way a little of an anti-climax. We did have one of the group freak out mid way which meant everyone else (us included) had to back up and out of the tunnels and then head back in again. It was pretty funny (ok not for them, but Corb as expected came out with some pretty funny comments). Our last evening in HCMC was very nice, walking by the park seeing all the locals out walking and playing shuttlecock hackey. We had a great dinner and more black sticky rice which made ... read more

After his failure as a man, a human being and a Buster at the Cu Chi Tunnels Joe has decided to try and redeem himself. He has booked himself onto a tour of the Mekong Delta. I have decided not to join him and, instead, spend my time more fruitfully in Saigon. After all who wants to spend hours on a bus followed by hours on boat followed by hours on a bus again? Joe is away at dawn and, seeing as how it's pissing rain, I decide to start the day with a little sleep in. I finally rise at 11.00am and make my way down the street in search of some breakfast. I find a nice little cafe and start with a coffee. There is a little metal filter placed atop a clear glass ... read more

So today we decided to explore Ho Chi Minh City. Starting at the Thai Binh markets we were amazed at the quality of the produce compared to markets that we had visited in Cambodia - the fruit looked great and the fish were still swimming in their buckets! From there we did a loop through the tree-lined streets to admire some of the colourful architecture before crossing over to the Ben Thanh market. Although very touristy it was cool to see all the handicrafts and cheesy souvenirs and we picked up some tasty gummy lollies on our way out. We then walked past the Mariamman Hindu temple and through the park to the Reunification Palace which was great. It's been left in the same state it was in when the Viet Cong troops stormed it in ... read more

So we've made it to Vietnam! The last couple of days, despite being a whole heap of fun in Phnom Penh were marred by the stress and anxiety of trying to get our Vietnam visas. We had thought that it would be a fairly simple procedure but upon filling out the forms and handing over the cash we were told that due to a special "ceremony" we would only be permitted to stay 17 days (until the 10th) in Vietnam, but would have to pay the same one month fee. Feeling that something was amiss we tried several travel agents and were told a whole heap of different stories and offered a whole heap of outrageous prices. Thankfully we found one lady, who after a number of phone calls to and fro was able to confirm ... read more

I play it safe the next few days and stick to the sites and restaurants recommended by every backpackers travel bible, the Lonely Planet. I try not to whip it out in public (as if I don’t look like a tourist already), so I spend time in my room studying the maps and names of the streets. The language is really so difficult for me, all of the letters come with accessories meaning they have little accents which range from dots to dashes to squiggly “hats” and pointy shoes, the “D” even has a scarf...and all of them have a different tone. For example, you can say the word MA but depending on the accent and tone it can mean either: ghost, mother, which, rice seedling, tomb, or horse. (?) I am learning most of my ... read more

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM! (you know that title was coming) I start my first day in Vietnam at 7am on a cyclo (see photo), I am willingly scammed to be taken to the first site on my list, the War Remnants Museum. Scam meaning, I pay $2 when I know it’s worth $1 for the ride. But since crossing the streets safely are a major life risk (remember frogger?), I accept. Conversations began with my new friend about his life and how he used to be a doctor before the war but the “re-education” changed everything. -HISTORY LESSON- Before the war many cyclo drivers were doctors, teachers and journalists, but like their friends they were punished for siding with the Americans. After the cease fire tens of thousands of them were stripped of their citizenship and sent ... read more

The following words are exerpts from my personal diary. March 15th 2006 In the distance a stray or kept dog barks steadily, seemingly guarding against the encroaching enemy. The parallel between rats, cockroaches and humans is begging to be made by someone. All three capable of survival under the most dire circumstances with their habitat consisting of cement trees, paved rivers and the odd oasis of a rubbish pile doubling as lunch or dinner. Even monkeys need trees and fresh air. Even the birds need a body of water to satisfy their thirst. What satisfies my thirst? What is it that soothes and apeases the humans thirst when they are parched? A satisfying career? A rewarding and fulfilling job? Having good friends or a loving family? A tasty meal? True love? Is it all of these ... read more

In 1992 I went on a “Save the Cranes Expedition” to Vietnam. It was a life-changing event for me. Our mission was to help with the research on the viability of setting up a nature reserve to save the tallest flying bird in the world, the Eastern Sarus Crane. This six foot tall bird was thought to be extinct but had shown up in what was left of the Plain of Reeds near the Cambodian border. I say life changing because here I was twenty five years after I had fought in the war, seventeen years after the war ended, working alongside Viet Cong and even an old Viet Cong General named Muoi Nhe I learned how easy it was working with them and how appreciative they were of our help. To make a long story ... read more

The main part of my trip to Vietnam was the bicycle ride from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. That took a month. I only detoured once off Highway One and that was to Phat Diem. Phat Diem is the home of a celebrated cathedral, which is remarkable for its vast dimensions and superb Sino-Vietnamese architecture. During the French era it was at the heart of Catholicism in the north. It suffered when so many Catholics went South after 1954 and the seminary was shut down. It is being reopened now. The grounds were extensive, beautiful and well cared for. On the ride South I saw town after town that was dominated by these huge Catholic Churches. In many ways it was like the towns in the Hays area of Kansas. There, the Catholics that immigrated ... read more
