From the South China Sea we entered the Saigon River to reach Ho Chi Min City. It’s amazing this river could accommodate such a large ship. The traffic on this river is intense. Small boats just take a chance and run directly in front of the ship. It took 3 1/2 hours to go up river and dock.... read more

Greetings to all...apologies for the length of time between entries - life here is not so new anymore, and thus it's difficult to feel inspired to sum it all up. That being said, there have still been a few noteworthy moments: first and foremost, my house was burgled a two weeks or so ago. We had an extreme hot spell for two weeks (actually, it's supposed to last appx two months or so, but weather's been off this year, and thus what heat we've experienced has been intense, but brief. It's already rained a few times this week, and the dry season is supposed to last until the end of MAy). Anyway, during the hot spell, Marta had a friend from abroad visiting, and they were both sleeping in her bed - the room got quite ... read more

As I lay mediatating in Tamil Nadu, I longed for cooler Himalayan climate - a breeze - or even for the electricity to come back on so my ceiling fan would move. It's hard for me to clear my mind here in India - thoughts rudely crowd my meditation. My senses are too open. I remembered my last yoga class. I miss the guidance of a class - someone else's brain doing the work of reminding me what pose is coming my way next. I had a great one in the States before we left which I dragged Rich to, and the other was in Saigon. Apart from that, I've been on my own. I saw a sign in a traveller cafe (Sinh Cafe on De Tham Street) for Saigonyoga.com. I looked it up and headed ... read more

Hey all! I'm going to be "quick" Saigon has been wonderful. The border crossing was surprisingly smooth and we found a really nice place to stay that is not a large backpacker hostel (there are 5 rooms and we are the only people staying there right now), which is a very nice change from Cambodia. I don't have much time here, so I'm not going to see the Cu Chi tunnels, which I really wanted to do, but I know I'll be back so that's just something I'll have to put off until next time. Today I went to the War Crimes Museum, which has surprisingly graffic photos on display as well as some commentary. It was great to visit and I'm really glad I went, but it was difficult material to say the least. Had ... read more

Alarm was set for 7AM, but Felicia woke up early, so we got up. Had breakfast at the hotel (included) then headed out to do HCMC in a day. First stop was the Reunification Palace. We had an English speaking guide and ended up touring the facility with another American. Then on to the War Remnants Museum, which had a lot of history about the war, including information about the lasting effects of Agent Orange (replete with pickled malformed fetuses in jars). Had lunch at Bunto, “Where Everything is Bun.” Bun is a Vietnamese noodle bowl; it has raw veggies on the bottom, vermicelli rice noodles in the middle, grilled meat on top, and you put a nice sauce over everything. Stopped to see the General Post Office, which is a grand old building, and walked ... read more

Just a quick update guys A couple of nights ago I was burgled. In my own house whilst I was there. They took my laptop, my money but more importantly my digital camera. Lisa from university is over here for two weeks and we have already been to Phu Quoc and Can Tho in the Mekong and all of those beautiful picture shave now been taken away from me. I'm not a happy bunny at the moment as my grandad is also in hospital and from the news that get filtered down to me he isn't doing so good :( Anyway sorry for lack of inspiration today... hope everyone is ok and i miss you all like crazy!! Up early to get to Sinh Café for the Cao Dai Cathedral/Cu Chi Tunnel day tour. The Cao Dai religion is a mixture of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. They are known for their very brightly colored temples and have worship every 12 hours starting at 6AM. The worshippers all wear white, except for some religious leaders, who wear red (Confucianism), yellow (Buddhism), or blue (Taoism). Had lunch and then went to Cu Chi Tunnels. The Cu Chi Tunnels were used by the VC during the war to escape American bombs, and for guerrilla warfare tactics and hiding. We got to go down a short tunnel; it was very small, hot, and dark. Todd had to squat walk all the way through. After getting back to HCMC, we had dinner at Lemongrass, then drinks at Saigon Saigon ... read more

Took a tuk-tuk to Capitol to catch our bus to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Unlike our previous experiences taking buses, it left right on time. The border crossing at Moc Bai was uneventful and easy. About an hour later we were in HCMC, the bus stopped right on the main tourist drag, Pham Ngu Lao. Right when we got off the bus a woman greeted us touting the availability of rooms in her guesthouse. So we thought why not and went to take a look, if this placed turned out to be okay, it would beat walking around searching. She led us into this alley off the main drag to My My Art Hotel. It was pretty cute, she said that it was only 5 months old…who knows. It was clean and pretty reasonably priced ... read more

Today we did the obligatory trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels. Though packed with propoganda it was quite interesting and the traps that the locals made to use against the Americans were unashamedly brutal. Crawling through the tunnels was obviously the highlight, though in a way a little of an anti-climax. We did have one of the group freak out mid way which meant everyone else (us included) had to back up and out of the tunnels and then head back in again. It was pretty funny (ok not for them, but Corb as expected came out with some pretty funny comments). Our last evening in HCMC was very nice, walking by the park seeing all the locals out walking and playing shuttlecock hackey. We had a great dinner and more black sticky rice which made ... read more

After his failure as a man, a human being and a Buster at the Cu Chi Tunnels Joe has decided to try and redeem himself. He has booked himself onto a tour of the Mekong Delta. I have decided not to join him and, instead, spend my time more fruitfully in Saigon. After all who wants to spend hours on a bus followed by hours on boat followed by hours on a bus again? Joe is away at dawn and, seeing as how it's pissing rain, I decide to start the day with a little sleep in. I finally rise at 11.00am and make my way down the street in search of some breakfast. I find a nice little cafe and start with a coffee. There is a little metal filter placed atop a clear glass ... read more
