Guten Morgen meine lieben. Bis bald eure Lisa... read more

I was convinced to go to Vietnam on a three week trip including cycling on the Mekong Delta for 5 days and 3 day boat tour in Halobg Bay; with some trepidation. Recently we have been busily squaring away last minute work commitments, and I'v been away winterizing the P&B coach house still under construction last weekend; draining water tanks and turning off the electricity while watching the first snow of the winter season in the Cariboo, on the Fraser Plateau, thinking how on earth am I going to be cycling in 35C humid Vietnam?. I've heard great some accounts of friendly people, great food and scenery. A group of 4 of us have come up with a diverse, not too rushed itinerary; HCMC; MoiNe Beach acclimatization 3 nights, cycling on the Mekong Delta 5days, HCMC, ... read more

29th/30th We landed in Saigon yesterday afternoon after a small flight delay. My three words first impression: friendly 'organised' chaos. Unlike Thailand, 'the land of smiles', here they seem more genuine and people smile at each other, which I didn't realise was missing in Bangkok until now. 'Organised' because there seems to be an unspoken agreement: on roads, motorcycles have priority; on zebra crossings, motorcycles have priority; on the pavement, motorcycles have priority. Chaos speaks for itself. First, we decided to take the bus. After confirming it went to the right road, the driver asked where we were from - and cheekily asked for some English money in exchange for Vietnamese Dong! The bus was a rickety tin can that had definitely seen better days, and very quickly filled with locals making the snail-pace commute into ... read more

Wow, this city is incredible. So after getting settled in my room I walked around the backpackers district and popped into some of the pub and such. Each of them has a lady out front beckoning you in. It’s no surprise that they see me and all the other expats walking around like living wallets but its not as bad as I expected. One “no” is usually sufficient and they don’t seem to get upset about it. In fact the people I have not had a single negative interaction yet. People here are generous with their smiles, and love seeing them in other people. The streets are dirty and get moreso as the day goes on but each little shop owner seems to take special pride in their little slice of the city. Being fresh off ... read more

Day 19 - Củ Chi Tunnels and War Remnants museum A good start to the day, up and around at about 7am. I always stay good first thing, and am usually in pain by lunch, and in agony by bedtime, but am noticing that good spells are getting longer every day! I make my own life difficult as I refuse to miss anything! After breakfast today, we are being picked up to go on a group tour to Củ Chi tunnels. The tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located in the Củ Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. We were shown in, and through some of the tunnel network. Unbelievable! Throughout the ... read more

Day 19 Up early for the Cu Chi Tunnels trip. Croissants and watermelon for breakfast. The tour guide, Thanh talked to us on the journey about the history of the Vietnam war, the current mixed feelings for USA and the current problems on the Mekong river. 6 countries currently have 16 million people living by the Mekong and rely on it. China is building dams which is restricting the water, especially to Vietnam who are at the end of the river. The bus trip was incredibly bouncy which was difficult for Lesley. There were 15 of us on the trip including a very annoying and political canadian woman. We arrived in Cu Chi in the jungle. Thanh explained about the different levels of tunnels. How they were dug, kitchens, schools etc all underground. The air came ... read more

Day 18 - Saigon Zoo and botanical gardens What a lovely, restful nights sleep! Soft bed, fluffy pillows, oh how I take the comforts oft own home for granted. I am reminded how much I love my marshmallow like bed! We both woke up feeling totally refreshed, and ready to start again. We had breakfast in the hotel; it was a refreshing change to not have an omelette, but i did still have an egg! I had it with toast, then croissants with jam, some fresh fruits and a cup of tea. Perfect! Our main task for today is to book the Mekong tour. We have researched before coming, it seemed expensive, but we agree that it is something that we definitely want to do. Last night we found some tour agent places do we are ... read more

Day 18 Great nights sleep and no rush for breakfast. Croissants today! The other option was Pho (soup and noodles) or hot rice and beef. I just can't face the equivalent of a Chinese meal at 8am in the morning. We made our way to Notre Dam cathedral 2 mins walk where we were last night and found tourist information. We wanted to book a Mekong river 2 night 3 day trip ending in Phnom Penh but they don't end in PP they come back to Saigon. The guide was very helpful and suggested a tour that was 3 days 2 nights but we don't return, we get a boat to PP. the tour takes us to My Tho enjoying sampan boat rides, pagodas, temples, orchard and beekeeping. Then a boat cruise on the Mekong to ... read more

Tuesday 7 July - We flew from Danang, leaving at 09.05 And arriving in HCMC at 10.29. We transferred to the Ruby River Hotel. Tom went out in search of nibbles from the market While I unpacked and caught up on some washing. Wednesday 8 July - Up early for Mekong Delta Cruise. It was a 07.30 pick up but usual slow start picking up different people. Our guide was from the Mekong and was from the Mekong Delta and was quite informative. We started by looking at honey bees and tasting Royal jelly in tea with kumquat juice. We heard some of the local people singing and playing instruments and ate local fruits: small bananas, dragon fruit, Jack fruit, pineapple and papaya. Then we took a canoe along the river ably paddled by a lady ... read more

Day 17 Up early and out for our usual omelette and bread breakfast. I'm convinced that I've not has a poorly stomach as I'm bound by all the eggs ive eaten! The private car came to pick us up just after 9am. Tuan the boss of Easy Riders came To see us off and wish is well. The lady on reception was hugging and kissing us goodbye. The hotel staff have been so lovely. The other day they came with a hot boiled egg and got Lesley to lay on the bed and roll it over her black eye. She found it very soothing. They also helped us with drying the clothes I'd washed through. The driver was friendly and spoke English which was helpful. Not a good start to the journey though as So many ... read more
