Wow, what a full day! Let's get started. First, a note on the weather. As you have probably gathered, while temperatures have been suffocatingly hot here in southern Vietnam, in terms of precipitation the weather has been good, with only brief spots of rain. Today, however, we awake to angry, overcast skies. Buffet breakfast at the resort and then we are off on the bus to explore Hoi An, considered one of the jewels of Vietnam's cultural heritage. The unique combination of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese influences in the old town have earned it a UNESCO heritage site designation. Hoi An's survival was a result of several factors. First, it used to be a major port, but the river gradually silted over and the town literally became a backwater. Second, its proximity to Danang during the ... read more

I got picked up from the station and taken to my hotel in Hoi An - it was about a 30 min drive. Once I was organised, I grabbed my camera and headed out into town and got ‘lost’ like I did in Saigon. I saw some cool sights, including some cool lanterns, markets, yellow buildings in the old town centre, boats on the river, the Japanese bridge and communist hammer and sickle flags. I also realised I was a millionaire and that Vietnamese English is just as funny as the Japanese English I’d seen throughout Japan in 2010. Hello everyone, I am now a lady of leisure. As I have completed my project for the Australian/ Vietnamese NGO, KOTO which was to compile a Health Resource Catalogue, I now have time on my hands. I am planning on exploring the local vicinity more on my deadly treddly. There are lots of small cams (islands) and precincts which I've yet to visit. As Sue2's daughter and her partner, Ben were here visiting, it was time to do the tourist thing.......Sapa and Halong Bay tours out of Hanoi. After spending the first night in Hanoi before our planned trip to Halong Bay, we were informed early in the morning when we were supposed to be leaving, that, due to unforeseen bad weather, our tour was cancelled. Luckily Sue2 had the forethought to see if we could ... read more

We've had a nice relaxing day so far in Hoi An. It's about 5 pm and we have some time before meeting the group at 7 pm for dinner (and to celebrate Michelle's 32nd birthday). I didn't mention the drive from Danang to Hoi An yesterday. We were picked up at the Danang railway station in a mini bus and It took about 45 min or so to get to our hotel. There are really beautiful beaches in the Danang area and there are lots of expensive looking resorts along the beach. After I did the blog yesterday afternoon, we showered (it sure was nice to shower after the long train ride, and we were pleased to have both decent water pressure and hot water). We met the group for a late lunch and walk around ... read more

Well, that's another four weeks of my life that I will never see again but I managed to fit quite a bit of socializing into it. The NGO (non govt organization) KOTO that I am currently working for had their annual field trip for all trainees and staff and the founder, Jimmy Pham at the end of July. As I was originally planning to go to Hanoi to fulfill this position and KOTO were kind enough to allow me to remain in Hoi An as I requested (I am researching/ writing/ providing a Health Resource Catalogue for KOTO), I hadn't actually physically met anyone connected to KOTO. With about a hundred KOTOans descending on Hoi An for a couple of days, it was an action packed time for them. I finally caught up with them when ... read more

Not sure if I actually have any "followers" but if I do, I apologise for being so remiss in my postings. The only reason I can provide is that I'm too busy having fun! When I say fun, I mean just random everyday things that are so easy over here precisely because I have no responsibilities other than researching and supplying a Health Resource Catalogue for the Australian/Vietnamese charity, KOTO. as an aside, over 100 of the trainees and their caretakers are here in Hoi An this week (they are based in Hanoi) and I finally get to put some faces to names! Looking forward to catching up with them at a few events/ dinners/lunches this week. After leaving the last blog so long between blogs, I decided to be a little more reliable in posting ... read more

We've been trying to upload this Vietnam wrap-up post for weeks but it's been hard to come up with a cohesive narrative about the past four months. Two days before our scheduled flight to the Philippines we received an email from Vietnam Airlines informing us that the leg from Đà Nẵng to Saigon (HCMC) had been pushed by over an hour, which would make it impossible for us to make the connection to Manila. Airlines in Vietnam are notorious for never leaving on time. When we first arrived we spent an unscheduled four hours in the airport in Saigon due to a delay that was never explained. Not one of the many flights we took on Vietnamese carriers left or arrived on time. So it wasn't unexpected that we would need to change our itinerary even ... read more

Day 18. A nice and early start for our flight to out next stop Ho Ain, only an hour flight so we get to our home stay at 11am, they let us check in anyways and we have a serious power nap (such a hard life) we wake up not feeling to great, the anti malaria tablets are horrible but we borrow push bikes from the home a ride the 3km into town mid afternoon, have a little wander, loads of tailors, and book onto a cooking class with a tour of the local vegetable village and the market for the next day, and use the lonely planet book to find our eatery, we settle on bale well, which only serves one dish, an ample supply of fresh lettuce and herbs, prawn spring rolls, grilled satay ... read more

Procrastination is my middle name. Too many options over here so that some things just keep getting deferred.....like blogging. I've had plenty of playmates lately and have probably been to more places in the last 6 weeks than I have in the last 6 months. I had one of my besties, James and his friend Mary (from Las Vegas) here at the end of April then another girl turned up to volunteer at Lifestart, Lisa from Portland, Oregon who stayed for a few weeks although she only lasted 4 days at Lifestart....a new record, I think. Lots of beer, bike rides and discovering new islands and areas around this gorgeous, lush country. A week later, the long awaited arrival of Sue Dodgson from Australia finally eventuated. She is here for 6 months to keep me company ... read more
