Originally clients - but now also good friends - the Farraway Family have been doing organised and private travel with us since earlt 2000's. we have introduced them to some great sights in both Europe and Asia. Usually we have various members of the family 6 and some years we have all of them (usually for Austria Christmas). This time - 3 of them have come to Vietnam - bringing "newbie" Toby. Mother Leanne and sister Sarah held his hands for his first visit. I met them late on the evening as their flight from Sydney to Saigon/Danang was delayed a while. I transferred them to the newly-opened Koi Hoi An Resort at Cua Dai beach. It was too late to go into Hoi An for eats - so we just went to the resort's restaurant.Graciously ... read more

We left Hue for the four hour drive over the Hai Van pass to Hoi An. I was still feeling tired and tight chested and was hoping the antibiotics would make me feel better soon. Our driver spoke very good English and Jerry enjoyed talking to him as we left Hue. Halfway to Hoi An we stopped at one of two large inland lagoons. One was used for pearl farming, an enterprise originally established by the Japanese, and now run solely by Vietnamese families growing cultured pearls for export to Japan. The other large lagoon was used for shrimp farming. The road was lined with eucalyptus tree plantations, a present after the war from the Australian Government, and today there are thriving home based small stills in the area producing eucalyptus oil and associated products. The ... read more

I left Saigon and headed North to the mountain village of Da Lat in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. I came in search of a few things; respite from the heat and a motorcycle to ride through the interior of the country on the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail. So I hopped a bus for eight hours and $180,000VND. Once at the station same story - push aside the taxi mafia and walk off into the darkness hoping for the best. And as usual someone came by and provided assistance in the way of a free ride to a nice guesthouse in the city centre. The man's name was Chilli. I asked him why he was called that and he said he liked his food extra spicy. I said we'd get along just fine. Turns out ... read more

You do need to have transportation (other than Shanks' Pony) when you are living here. Whilst many places are walkable - in the cooler period over TET it's OK - but not so comfortable during the summer months. Last year when we were here - we bought a Yamaha scooter in partnership with local friend Minh. The deal is that we use it when we are here, and when we are "gone" - he can rent it out to guests staying at the nearby villa where he works. Using the bike - I return to Ba Le market - the local one just a couple of minutes ride from the unit - to re-aquaint with friends and market merchants we used on previous visits. The bike will come in handy to go to Da Nang (where ... read more

Time to leave the hustle and bustle of Saigon and head north to Da Nang. In relation to the "war" - Da Nang is where the first American combat troops landed in 1965 - and where the last combat troops departed in 1973. Da Nang is the gateway to the ancient port town of Hoi An 34 kms to the south - now classified under UNESCO - and one of the major tourist destinations in Vietnam. Our home for the next 6 months is in the district of Cam Thanh in Hamlet #5. It's midway between the ancient town and the beach of Cua Dai - a distance of approximately 5 kms. It's the same area where we did a "test run" last year - and is only 300m from our last accommodation. Whilst here last ... read more

Today we were supposed to go on a tour to a fishing village on bicycles with a man named Mr Trung but unfortunately when we woke up it was absolutely pouring rain (of the heavy torrential variety) so we cancelled it. We lost our deposit but we were both kind of relieved to have a quiet day. We spent the morning just hanging out in the hotel and not doing a whole lot; Brad watch tv and I updated the blog. Last night Brad had arranged with Mark (our kiwi friend) that they would hire a motor bike and go for a ride together at 2pm, Mark had already done it before and was keen and neither myself or Lyn were up for it. When 2pm came round, the weather had cleared up so Brad went ... read more

This morning we thought we got up early but realised that Brad's watch was wrong, luckily we still had enough time for breakfast before our cooking class. I was feeling a bit crook in the stomach so cooking wasn't really what i felt like doing this morning but it was already booked in. We went downstairs to the lobby at 10.15 and the chef introduced himself, his name was Bau. Eventually the other couple who were joining us turned up. They were Aussies as well (Cal and Lauren from Victoria) We got on really well with them straight away. Then Bau took us to the markets, these were not far from the hotel but in an area none of us knew was there, these are the markets that the locals go to. It was definitely a ... read more

We woke up and it was still pitch black, our body clocks are obviously not yet aligned to the Vietnam timezone. It was a good opportunity to just chill until breakfast opened at 6.30am. Brad then headed off the gym and I spent some time setting up this blog so that we have something to look back on and also so that the kids can keep track of what we're up to. We then headed off to the spa for our daily massages (they are included in our package). We were greeted with a welcome tea of some sort which was lovely then were taken to seprate rooms for our massages. It was similar to a hot stone but using these little bags containing stones and was amazing. We both requested hard massages and when I ... read more

After an early morning flight out of Singapore, we arrived in Da Nang, Vietnam for the start of our Vietnamese adventures. The flight over gave me some great tips via some Asian travel shows that I had watched on the plane but no matter how prepared we thought we were for the craziness of bikes on the roads, nothing could really prepare us for how insane it really is. We found our driver, Baa standing there with a sign with our name on it at the airport. He greeted us with an air-conditioned car and a bottle of cold water each. As we drove through Da Nang and started our journey to Hoi An (which is about 40 minutes away), I had to just take quiet deep breaths every time we had a near miss with ... read more
