Mui Ne is a quiet town. Its beach offers a pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Min City and the humidity of the Mekong Delta. The beach is relatively un-spoilt, lined sparingly with a few bamboo bungalows. Along the beach there is a constant wind, which makes good surf, a popular spot for Americans during the war. We chilled on the beach for a day, and headed 20km off in a taxi to the nearest town Phan Thiet, in search of some nightlife. On arrival the power in the town had gone, with only candles to guide us we ordered a traditional Vietnamese dish amusingly called Pho (childish I know, but makes me chuckle!) which consists of noddle and beef soup. We found a local night club, the only place with electricity ... read more

Woke up nice and early for the bus, but somehow still nearly missed the bloody thing! The journey really was shite. One thing that I should explain is that all of the buses over here are constructed for Asian people and me being head and shoulders above most of them means that I get zero legroom. As if this wasn't bad enough some inconsiderate little cretin sitting in front of me reclined his seat so far back that the back of the seat was literally touching my nose! I was, however immediately cheered up by the scenery once we arrived. Mui Ne beach is beautiful. I apologise, but the pictures that I took are not worthy of being added. This was as a result of a combination of me being very tired and shaky at 7am ... read more

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City late at night after about 24 hours of straight travel. We were immediately overwhelmed by the intensity of the city. Motorcycles, bicycles, and cars everywhere. Every street filled with shops selling everything from hats and t-shirts to flat-screen televisions. We stayed in HCMC for the night and then quickly left for Mui Ne in the morning. Mui Ne is a relatively quite beach resort northeast of HCMC. We found a beautiful resort right on the beach, where we stayed for three nights at only 12 USD per night! That even included breakfast!! Hmmm... breakfast. We got our first introduction to pho, which is noodle soup served with beef or pork. What a hardy breakfast! We mostly chilled on the gorgeous beach. There were very few beach vendors (in sharp ... read more

Today I got the bus to Mui Ne. I didnt really like it on arrival - resorts and no real character. However it was great to spend an afternoon chilling with a few beers and a book. In the evening Alastair, Vicky, Em, James and some other couple whos names I forget went out for a pleasant dinner. The only disturbance was the cat sized rat we saw running across the floor, and the mob of locals beating a snake to death on the street outside!... read more

It's been a roller coaster of a time here in Vietnam so far. I've been on many beach vacations, river boat vacations, to water parks, zoos that made me cry, made lifelong friends, lost friends who've moved away, and made new friends. I've eaten at street stalls on blue plastic chairs while I was surrounded by an army of rats ready to take me out at the knee caps for finishing my meal without sharing. I've learned to drive in the worst traffic in the world, without understanding a single street sign (not that anyone pays any attention to them anyways). I've mastered the heat, learned to navigate my way through Ben Thanh Market, and have even learned enough of the language to communicate with most people I come across in common situations. None of these ... read more

Hey dudes! I've been in Mui Ne (a little beach 'town' 3 hours from Saigon) for the past few days, so I thought I'd throw up a few pictures. Spent the last few days on a rented motorbike, zipping up and down the 22km stretch of beach checking out the sights. The main "must see" things around Mui Ne are the red, yellow and white sand dunes, the red canyon, a fishing village which is really more of a little piece of beach where all the fishing boats drop off their haul each morning, and a fairy stream (which is a tiny stream that starts in the sand dunes and runs down to the ocean - you can walk the length of the stream up into the dunes / canyon). I ended up running pretty low ... read more

Hey all, I know that I only updated the blog yesterday, but the new pictures that I took today just had to be posted. This morning at 4:00am I caught a jeep out of town, and headed for the sand dunes -- the landscape that this part of Vietnam is most famous for. I guess having seen desert in Egypt, I wasn't expecting too much, but I was blown away. Only 20 or 30 minutes drive from the ocean and suddenly you find yourself in the middle of these crazy dunes -- once you start climbing into them, it would be easy to imagine yourself in the middle of a desert with no way out. There are red and white sand dunes, surprisingly the latter of which were most impressive. I could have easily spent all ... read more

Dear all, Well, since my last update I have managed to cram a lot of things in -- the usual touristy sightseeing, some moving from place to place, and, believe it or not, even a little beach time. I won't bore you with all of the details, but I'll mention a few of the more... ahem... action packed happenings! To begin with, and also as a warning to any people who might be reading this blog prior to venturing into Vietnam, I'll start with the bus trips. In my experience, and as far as I can tell from other backpackers, in most peoples' experience, these are the worst parts about Vietnam. Picture a cross-Canada Greyhound bus. Now, make the seats smaller and more squished together, take away the toilet, make the aisle about half as wide ... read more
