Wednesday 14th June Paul - Woke up this morning at the terrible time of 7:30am. Not impressed with the early start but we had a bus to catch. Another of those horrible "Open Bus" tours. Or as we like to call them "The Frat Party" bus. "Narly man and lets go get fookin' wasted, yeah baby..." We were heading to Mui Ne if you didn't already gather from the title. It's basically one long beach resort with some huge and impressive sand dunes. Anyway back to the bus. Another legendary journey where we sat in front of some guy who spoke to his "friend" next to him for the whole four hours about how he'd "you know, done this, done that and god YOU HAVE to do this in Australia and Thailand and Oh my god ... read more

First impressions of Mui Ne weren't great - we got settled into a guesthouse near to where the bus dropped us off and headed out to get some food shortly later. The problem was that the nearby restaurants didn't seem to have any food. Pretty much everything we ordered was "finished" and what we finally got wasn't great. The following morning we hit the beach which seemed nice at first, but I soon discovered that if you strayed more than a 10m either side of the area right outside the guesthouse the beach was coverred in debris (including a dog's skull). Even so, we had a nice afternoon of reading on the nice part of the beach before heading out for a more successful search for food. There is no town as such in Mui Ne, ... read more

5 am is early where ever you are in the world and after a bottle of Dalat Red wine and sangria it is even earlier. We met up with our American travelers and jumped on the motor bikes and headed out in a pack to chase the morning sunrise. The air was still fresh from the wild downpour during the evening and we sped along hoping to beat the clouds to the dunes. Our fears were fufilled as we raced along the coast only to to find a massive cloud obscuring the rising sun. There was a beautiful rainbow appearing above the cloud but, we will have to return to catch the sun next time. As we began a 30 minute walk to the peak of the magnificent sand dunes, the sun broke from the cloud ... read more

Our time in Mui Ne (pronounced Moo Nay) started much like our time in Ko Samet, Thailand - at a budget guesthouse which left us unsatisfied. This hotel was actually a great value for the money and was clean and right on the beach but it did not have air conditioning and was located on the center beach which is relatively narrow and steep because of erosion. We are slowly starting to realize that we are just not happy at the beach if we’re staying in budget digs. So after arriving by bus from Saigon and eating lunch, we spent a couple of hours looking at the more deluxe hotels close to our budget guesthouse. Eventually we decided on Blue Ocean Resort which was $55/night and had lovely grounds (including a great pool) and a very ... read more

Today we joined Mr. Binh and his Easy Riders for a day of touring around Mui Ne. If you're ever in Mui Ne, look for Mr. Binh, his tours are fun, safe, and worth writing about in travel blogs! :-) Mr. Binh has a great crew of guys working for him, even if he himself can get a little lazy! We had planned to do a 2 hour trek up Tac Cu Mountain to see the 49 metre lying buddha on top of the mountain. However, after an almost 2 hour motorbike ride to the mountain, our "numb bums" made us think otherwise. A two minute cable car ride up the mountain for 50,000 dong (about US$3.50) made more sense! The view from the cable car was spectacular. We saw villages, bambo forest, and the seascapes ... read more

Leaving the busy confines of Saigon on the road to the East coast beaches and sand dunes of Mui Ne. After a comfortable 4 hour bus ride we arrive in the beautiful paradise that is Canary Resort, Mui Ne. We arrrived to finding ourselves with our own private beach! There's a lot to be said for traveling off season. The beaches here are beautiful with white sand and blue waters but after donning our swim suits and splashing in to the water we were both disappointed by the small amounts of debris. The water is warm and beautiful, and in spite of the debris is still refreshing, and definitely worth a visit. We met a lot of travellers in Saigon who still recomended the beaches in Mui Ne over the popular beaches in Nha Trang. For ... read more

Hit the road early on Saturday and got a 7am bus from Nha Trang to Mui Ne, we finally arrived in Mui Ne about 12.30pm. We had not booked accommodation ahead so our first task was to find somewhere. We did not realise it but Mui Ne is actually pretty much 22km long, and all the hotels/resorts are spread across this 22km. The bus company gets a commission with one resort where we were dropped off, but it was too expensive for us. I saw around the corner of the bus one guy trying to catch our attention so I went to speak to him, walked around the corner of the bus and there were about 8 guys from hotels all wanting us to stay with them, they just swarmed around and tried to get us ... read more

Yesterday I had just woken up as Helen stretched and yawned and said "Happy Birthday Karen." Ah, I've reached 24. A knock on the door informed us that our bus had already arrived to take us from the cool and wet mountain climate of Dalat to the scorching heat of Mui Ne. After a quick baguette breakfast Helen, Julia and I boarded the bus - well really a delapidated mini van seriously lacking in suspension and of which we were the only passengers. We slept, bumped and sweated away the 4 hours to Mui Ne. At one stage a group of Vietnamese militants waved us down and loaded into the van, very smiley happy to be with the white western girls, chatting up Helen and taking photos of Julia. Eventually the rice paddies gave way to ... read more
