I left Melbourne in the morning, and got to Saigon at about 3.30pm. Going through customs in Saigon was really confusing. We left Saigon at about 6.00pm, and got to Hanoi at about 8.00pm. When I got to Hanoi, there was a guy holding a sign with my name on it, kind of. It said, 'Micgell'. Anyways, this guy was really funny. On the way to the hotel I noticed that there were many more building and cars compared to when I was there last time. I stayed in the same hotel I stayed in last time I was there. They told me it would cost me $17 per night, for a room without a balcony. Once I had told them that I had stayed there before, they ended up giving me a room with a ... read more

I didn’t even know what a betel nut was before all of this started. By about the middle of our trip, I knew something was up about betel nuts—whatever they were. I kept hearing Jim Allen, another student in our group, talking with Nick about finding them. I eventually found out all about them, and I got to participate in an experimentation with them—which was not only hilarious, but a bonding experience as well. Basically, a betel nut is a nut that grows in Southeast Asia. The nut, when prepared properly—considered to only be done so by a woman—is said to have mild stimulant and hallucinogenic effects. I can’t recall how it’s made, but it involves the leaves of the areca tree and a little of the white mineral lime also. After it’s made, the chewer ... read more

Hanoi is simply wonderful, in my opinion. The people here are way cooler than in Ha Long City, and there’s so much more to do and see. There’s a nice nostalgic feeling in the air in Hanoi…probably because of all the 19th century French architecture and the fact they have quarters of the city named “Old Quarter,” and “French Quarter.” I especially love the wooden shutters and balconies. As I mentioned in an earlier entry (See “Overall Impressions of the Trip” if you have no idea what I’m talking about), there weren’t a lot of people who liked Vietnam too well, but there were a few of us who loved it, especially Hanoi. One girl said Hanoi was like everything she liked about Europe mixed with everything she liked about Asia, plus a little of Minneapolis ... read more

I'm startin to tire of Hanoi. It's a mix of heat, sensory overload and continual harrasment..I am treated like a walking ATM..people lining up to take cash out.."Want motorbike, Sir?" asks a guy...No, thanks I say..and then another asks ...."Want motorbike, Sir?" . Yet Another drives up beside me "Want motorbike?" "No thanks" He drives up beside me again, "Want Marjiauna?" "No thanks" Same guy drives up yet again "Want motorbike?" "No" Same guy drives up yet again "Want Marjiauna?" I book a ticket for a tour to Halong Bay at Anh 2 hotel, they say they can cash travellers cheques but as soon as I countersign I'm whisked off through the streets ....we come to a big block of cars and bikes... horns are going like crazy..."What's the matter?" I shout. "No problem just a ... read more

'Tis impossibly hot, I'm starved and don't wander far before I pass a traditional Vietnameese pho or noodle shop. An American is making conversation in English and Vietnameese with a young Vientnameese girl and a German guy is tryin to join the conversation.....The American, an expat called Gerry, invites me to sit down and another Vietnameese girl brings Breakfast; a delicious pho, beef and veg. Afterwards myself and Tim, the German, explore the area around the Truc Bac lake. 'Tis hard going but there are few sights that amuse. There's a bunch of guys having a fish fight. They take fish from plastic bags dump them in to a glass jar and then shake the jar vigorously around. Money is exhanged and everyone concentrates on the jar. We don't get much further without collapsing near the ... read more

In Hanoi... ditched my crappy bus pass and took the overnight train from Hue to Hanoi with my aussie friends and a belgium couple. I can't remember their names, so I refer to them as Hanz and Franz (even though I know that's German...and I don't do it in their company, of course.) Anyway, train was lovely. Paid more for the one trip than my entire idiotic tourist bus pass, but it was worth it. I gave my bus tickets to the lovely Vietnamese girl who worked at my last hotel. She was very excited! I felt good about that. Hanoi, as far as I can tell, is just another city. Lotsa bikes. Lotsa motorbikes. Lotsa nice lamps and pottery to buy. Lotsa people bugging me to 'Lady, lady! You buy something!' (Postcards, toothpicks, cigarettes, rubber ... read more

I’ve been in Vietnam six weeks to the day, and all of that in Hanoi. The more I don't learn or speak Vietnamese, the more I realise how crucial it is if you are more than just a blow-in tourist. The deeper I get into the culture and the more I grasp, the greater the miscommunications. Yesterday Jan, a mate from my course, and I rocked up to a side-of-the-road stall serving Bun Cha - basically cold soup with barbecued meat, rice noodles and fresh herbs. A steal at 50 cents a pop. I can appreciate that with a tonal language, the Vietnamese might not understand my very Western pronunciation of the word two (hai), referring to our order for 2 Bun Cha. So I also hold up two fingers (the polite way round) to clarify ... read more

Light Star hotel, Hanoi overcharged me in the morning. They added VAT and internet which hadn't told me about and I qucikly got to understand the cynic factor that afflicts Vietnamn travllers as mentioned in the Lonely Planet. After about few minutes waiting I spoke up "Why didn't I get change?", I asked. He had left me additionally short a couple of dollars. "I don't have any", he attempted to excuse himself... I had the good fortune to meet a German/Vientnamese couple (who amazingly were of similiar age), who I spoke German to and they brought me to faboulous New World Hotel (woman was very honest and always smiling) where I got a bedroom with sitting room place for 8$.. I went a walking and got a Cyco driver down one street...towards Ho Chi Minh's maousoleum ... read more

My last day in Vientianne. I booted around the massive market (Talat Sao) by bike and finally bought the obligarory beer Lao t-shirt (1.50$). I bought a bunch of other things which later I relaized were either lost or stolen.....(I had sat down at one of the market stalls for a coke and the woman owner was trying to pair me with her daughter....A large middle aged man found the whole thing hillarious, looked at me gestured at the girl laughed and stomped off....) At Wattay airport, I gave the happy tuk - tuk driver all my KIP, bumped in to Tony again who got caught for overstaying one night (10$). We were met in Hanoi by the pushiest taxi drivers I ever seen at an airport anywhere...(little did I know how naive I really was) ... read more

For the last three days I've been touring Ha Long Bay, a few hours east of Ha Noi. Ha Long bay is a World Heritage Site and is home to about 2000 limestone islands which jut out of the sea in stunning formations. The trip started with a 4 hour bus ride to Ha Long Harbour where we boarded our ship. The ship is quite hard to describe. It was 2 stories, a main dining room area on the second floor, and cabins below. There was also a rooftop lounge area. However most of the first day was spend in the dining area while it poured rain outside. There were about 16 of us on board the first day and we all looked at the beautiful scenery of the islands that surrounded us on all sides. ... read more
