Hey guys I have had an insane week. After my last entry i went and hit the town in Saigon. Met some Aussie lads in a rock'n pub and found myself booking a ticket with them to a little coastal town called Mui Ne. The bus left at 6am, i left the pub at 2am (they were still hard at it - it was one of their birthdays).... bottom line is i made it to the bus and they didn't. So i was alone again, but loving it. Arrived in Mui Ne, met some guys from Seattle on the bus and some Aussie lads at the resort, we had a bonfire on the beach that night which was pretty cool. Caught the bus the next day to Nah Trang where I met some Canadian gals (who ... read more

Ha Noi walking tour A little shopping and sun Lots of museums. That pretty much sums up Sunday. Claire, Sarah and myself checked out a few sights on Sarah's last full day in Ha Noi. First stop was a visit to the Woman's Museum. Quite an interesting display especially the role that Women had during the Revolution etc. The top floor was basically the "costumes" of the different areas of Viet Nam. To be honest I can't remember what the second floor was all about at this point in time. :) Then we headed towards the Temple of Literature. But not before having lunch at KOTO. I believe that stands for Know one, Teach one. Basically a place where young people are trained in the ways of the restaurant World among other things. I will have ... read more

Hello! It's been a while. Thanks for all the messages from those wondering where I have been! There’s a lot for me to tell but not much time to type. Hopefully it will be a little less hectic in the next couple of days and I'll be able to fill everyone in on my happenings. We, Sarah, Claire and myself, just got back from Ha Long Bay this evening after a few delays... Long day on the bus Lots of talkers on my tour Foggy Ha Long Bay Not a bad haiku that was composed in ten seconds flat! As I like to say, it is easy to write bad haiku. :) We will be doing a lot of sightseeing tomorrow around Hanoi so I should be checking into bed early tonight. Sorry that this blog ... read more

Hi All.. Everyone OK? Hope So.. So here we are...we thought Bangkok was crazy for traffic but this place tops it by a long stretch.. Never have we seen so many bikes in such a small place, and somebody decided to do away with traffic lights and road markings just to up the stakes.. You literally took your life into your own hands when crossing the road, but it was this or just being satisfied with seeing one side of Hanoi! Somehow though we saw only one small bump in a city where there is no wrong side of the road and no correct direction to take - just hold your horn and go seemed to be the accepted way. If this was in the UK there would be a dozen road rage murders a day ... read more

Flew up to Hanoi, much smaller than HCM, quite different. Stayed a night and then went out to Halong Bay for a two day junk cruise. Amazing area, 100s of limestone rock formations, caves etc. Ate beautiful seafood and even tried a little squid fishing. Back to Hanoi for two nights of luxury at the Hilton - fantastic! Amanda, Gary, Andrew and Mike all sadly departed for the reality of work, while Storm, Nick, Sarah and Kate stayed a few mre days to visit Uncle Ho in all his embalmed glory - 30 years dead - and explore the quaint streets of the old quarter. ... read more

Ethnography has long been the written form of choice for Sociologists, and so I was excited to learn that the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was located in Hanoi. My penchant for nerdiness and adventure inspired me to begin my Bicycle Tour of Vietnam by renting a rickety bike and navigating my way to the museum. How tough could 7km be, even if the streets DID seem daunting as a pedestrian. Surely it would be easier to be among the dodgers than the dodged. The trip there took me a little over 2 hours. As it turns out, this tourist destination is more likely to be frequented by bus-boarding tour groups than Henry the Navigator types on bicycles, and marked very well on the map. At any rate, the museum was lovely, and I particularly enjoyed chatting ... read more

I navigated my way to Ha Hoi street by trial and error. First, there were several failed verbal requests for the street to local street vendors, which were greeted with nods and choruses of "Ha NOI". Yes, I knew I was already in Hanoi, but now I needed to find Ha Hoi, so I resorted to address-written-in-Sharpie-marker-on-body approach. Flashing my hand to a book vendor, I was relieved to see that smile of recognition flash across her face. With an X on my map, I easily found my way to my free night's accomodation at the Travel Indochina HQ. I arrived to find Snuggle J had not yet arrived, but was quite happy to set down my pack and rest on the front stoop. I had hardly settled on my bum, when a shuttlecock flew over ... read more

For the most part, I spent my first day in Vietnam learning to cross the street. Despite having dodged traffic in a variety of continents, I was surprised by the interpretive ingenuity of road etiquete in Vietnam. I spent the morning on an informal tutorial, following natives up to busy intersections and walking alongside them as they confidently headed directly into the flow of traffic. I stopped on several corners just to take a mental snapshot of a vegetable woman picking her way across the street as motorbikes sped past on either side and a taxi barreled on behind. On narrower passages, pedestrian traffic is forced onto the street, and motorized vehicles dodge and weave in any spaces in between. There are no rules of right or left, only the law of "motorbikes and bicycles dodge ... read more

Well, I have just completed one of, if not, the best weeks of my life. Spent the last week riding through the North of Vietnam, from Hanoi to Sapa. Was on a bike called a "Minsk." It is a motorbike that was built in the Soviet Union and is the most basic of bikes. It has a 150cc engine, off road wheels, needs to be kick started (which was a first for me) and needs oil to be mixed with the petrol in order for it to work. This also ensures a smokey muffler. I won't give you a day to day dairy of the trip but will tell you about the highlights. On the second day we hit the off road track. Dirt tracks with loose rocks everywhere, massive potholes, most of them filled with ... read more

Happy Monday to all, especially those sitting in work !!! We left boring Vientiane yesterday and took a 50 minute flight to Hanoi in North Vietnam. So sad to leave Laos, the people are amazing. It is ranked 14th poorest country in the world and you can see why when you pass through some of the towns, but the people are so happy and work 7 days a week. Most of them have never left the country......never seen a beach or the sea.......makes you think! Arrived in Hanoi late last night and got a minibus into town. The city is huge (3.5million people). I know a few of you warned me about how mad Vietnam traffic is, but it has to be seen to be believed!!!!! Motorbikes flying across the road in all directions. The trick ... read more
