Well we have escaped the jungle for a few days and we are in Lake Toba in Sumatra - the largest lake in South East Asia. We have managed to get internet access so are busy checking emails and we thought we would update you all too. We arrived in Vietnam from Cambodia on the 31st March and had approximately a week to explore this beautiful country. We definitley want to come back as the country is huge and we really did not get enough time to see everything. We started in the capitol of Hanoi - this was a lovely place with a real french feel about it. Lots of small shops everywhere selling all kinds of things. Beautiful lamps, pitures, bags, clothes, food, CD's. It was great just wandering the streets and watching all ... read more

so hanoi was a fun city to do in a day. i live in nyc...it was like visiting another city but pretty fun to be a part of the majority this time. also imagine all the nyc subway riders on motos (motor bikes). they don't have much of a public transportation system so most of them travel by moto! and no joke...it's ridiculous! one day i tried to cross the street at 5pm (rush hour) and looked in just one direction and could not find a gap for at least 5 minutes. i soon found out from my cousin nguyen to "not be afraid." just start walking at the cross walk. walk slowly. do NOT stop. they will slow down for you. they expect you to keep walking so they will slow down. the next time ... read more

the infamous "uncle toe" that i've talked about in yoga class. we arrive at his home (and aunt tuc and cousin nguyen) at 6am in the morning after a decent night's sleep on the train. uncle tho still works part-time as a doctor at a nearby clinic. he left home at 20 to attend medical school in the north of vietnam. soon after the war broke out and he could not return home. he was of two sons who went to north vietnam to study. the eldest 2. my great grandfather died of a broken heart as he never got to see them before he died bc of the split btwn north and south. uncle tho worked for the military his entire life...he even cared for Ho Chi Minh!!! wow huh!? "great man," my uncle says ... read more

Once again we arrived in a city, this time Hanoi, tired, hungrey and in need of a hot shower. We adventually, after an hour or so trudging around in the rain, found a so called guesthouse which had vacancies and was in our price range. Unfortunately our budjet could only stretch to a room which resembeled a giant damp tupaware container! Our room seemed to be a cheap addition to the hotel, the walls were made of thin plastic and the roof of tin. Due to the broken bathroom door it was possible to take a morning shower whilst waving to the nextdoor neighbours! Thanks to the homely drizzel which accompanied our first few days in the capitol, sightseeing was put aside and we booked our planned excursions. Firstly our boat trip to Halong Bay and ... read more

From Vientiane in Laos we flew to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. By this time Denise was not feeling too well and things got worse in Hanoi. We booked in to a pokey wee hotel next to the mist-shrouded Hoan Kiem lake, in the old quarter and attended the local speciality, a water puppet theatre show. Denise eventually had to see a doctor as she hadn't eaten much for about 4 days and certainly wasn't keeping any of it inside. The Doctor at the SOS International clinic said she should stay in as she was dehydrated and they needed to do tests to see what was wrong. I checked in to a guesthouse nearer the clinic and next to the mist-shrouded (everything was mist-shrouded in Hanoi in January, which is winter in Vietnam!) St Josephs Cathedral. ... read more

Hi Guys Seems i neglected to let you all know about the weather and the people last entry. The weather is fantastic, a little humid but not too hot (at least in the south)..... now i am in Hanoi its a little drizzly and humid but still tshirt weather. The only time you really crack a sweat is carrying your pack for a few hours. The locals are seriously friendly people, they have helped me out heaps - down south they are always smiling, but in Hanoi (home town of Ho Chi Minh) they are a little more solemn faced but very nice none the less. There are of course the usual cyclo and motor drivers, occasional beggers but its very manageable - you only need to say no 2 times usually and they don't often ... read more

I met up with Claire today to go pay a visit to Uncle Ho. We headed out to the Mausoleum mid-morning to be met by a long line-up. It seemed long because everybody had to check in their bags, walk through a metal detector and check in their cameras. There were a ton of tours there at the same time so it almost felt like we fit right in. Basically we were ushered (I was gonna say herded but ushered sounds so much better!) into the Mausoleum to be greeted by guards about every 10 to 15 paces. It was really quiet. The whole walking by Ho Chi Minh took no more than 20 seconds. All I could really think about when I was walking by his body was, "I'm looking at a dead guy!" I ... read more

Okay..slowly catching up. Starting to feel less and less that this is homework. :) After Claire and I said a few quick farewells to Sarah (who btw, I hope is feeling okay...) Claire and I didn't do anything all too exciting. We sat round the Hoan Kiem Lake for a bit. Walked around the Lake. Picked up a couple of photocopied books (so much for copyright laws!) Had some lunch. Walked around some of the surrounding streets around the lake. Sat down and perused our books. Got harassed a bit by some book sellers and some lady that was trying to sell Claire some giant rice cake thing wrapped in leaves. We parted ways for a couple of hours to head back to our respective places for a bit of rest before meeting up again at ... read more

If it wasn't such a hassle it would be neat to "pop" into Tam Ky and see the kids one last time... Geez it's been a long time since I've written in my blog I'm not sure where to start. I guess from more or less where I left off... Okay, let's ... read more
