This morning we were woken up 6.00am-ish by notifications coming through to our phones about Preston LXRP works on Cramer Street tomorrow (Tuesday). Hmmn, perhaps we should unsubscribe from the level crossing removal project notifications while we are on holidays? Not to worry, since I was awake I decided that I WOULD wash my hair this morning!! Besides which we needed to make sure we breakfasted earlier this morning with our excursion for today occurring before lunch. The sampans arrived before 8.30am to whisk us across the river to a fish farm where we learnt about rearing the fish. It is a long process, taking about about nine months to grow the fish to marketable size. It sure is smelly though. The pong of the fish and rice food that they make up for them onsite ... read more

After a good nights sleep woke to find the homestay was over the water due to the high tide. After a short boat ride back down the river, we started a long day in the saddle starting with a 40 km ride to lunch passing intense agricultural activities utilising the fertile rich soils of the Mekong delta. Lunch was a superb small village menu being the family home of our tour bike mechanics followed by another 40 km ride in quite warm conditions. We then had a short bus and ferry ride to Long Xuyen to end our 2 day Mekong experience before travelling to our last overnight stop in Vietnam at the Chau Pho Hotel. After dinner we had a rickshaw tour of the town to end our Vietnam visit.... read more

Day 21 - "Crocodile teeth" floating market, crocodile restaurant, Cham people and Chau Doc I had a rough night last night! Very difficult getting comfortable due to neck and arm pain. Covered the muscles in tiger balm, eventually, fell asleep! It was a 6am start, breakfast, and out, leaving our baggage for the driver to pick up. He will meet with us later. Hoang was already in the breakfast room when we got there. It was a quick breakfast and off on foot, to the dock. We are going to the floating river market. Houng relays another story about yet another strong man, he fought a huge crocodile, hence, this is now called crocodile market. Everything that sells, or that is a need point, has a floating version. The floating petrol station is a strange one ... read more

On Thursday it was time to say goodbye to Cambodia and Lou, for now. After our bus across the border experience we decided an alternative route might be better. We had really hoped to cruise along the Mekong river, but couldn't find anything within our end of holiday budget, so settled for a speed boat trip across the border and a bus back to hcmc (not so glamorous but still gave us some glimpses of river life). The boat trip was quite good fun, showing the vastness of the Mekong river and varied uses. We had to stop to repair a fuel line, but otherwise had an event free journey. The border crossing was much less stressful, in Cambodia we and the other dozen passengers hopped off to get our passports stamped while the remaining border ... read more

I'm up early on Sunday morning and have got myself organised with hours to spare. After breakfast I head out for a walk and found myself in D's Books, where I purchased a 2nd hand novel. I left a book at Horizons in Siem Reap for another traveller to enjoy, and will do the same with this one when I'm finished with it. My planned departure is at midday on the Hang Chau Tourist Boat, bound for Chau Doc in Vietnam. The boat leaves from the Port on Sisowath Quay, and the ticket cost me $29. Unfortunately there is only one daily departure, an earlier start would have suited me better, but nothing I can do about that. There is another company called Blue Cruiser who ply this route, but they leave even later, at 1.30pm. ... read more

Early starts, well you know how I love those...but it's such a buzz to wake up and make the most of the day in this amazing country and be able to explore Ito. Two wheels with an awesome group of people. Concentration is always high as we negotiate traffic with unwritten rules as well as THE most excitable kids in the world. If we had a pound for every "hello" we returned then we could all retire! Scenery is magnificent with a few industrial bits thrown in the mix. Tomorrow is another big day with a final bill climb to end the 95km. So some of us have just had massages to prepare the aching legs ready for more experiences. Talking of which, toilets here will not be winning any health and safety prizes any time ... read more

Hi all. Well we arrived this morning after a long..... Flight. Missed a might's sleep and couldn't quite work out what day it is! Once we landed we went straight to the bike shop and were all fitted for our bikes. Saigon is mad. Motorbikes everywhere and you take your life in your hands when crossing the road! Lovely hotel, not quite sure what I was expecting but it is fine. a group of us walked round Saigon today, going to the market and the war museum. All very interesting. Been out for a meal as a group tonight, getting to know everyone's names, but three more new people came today so it's quite a challenge to remember everyone.ready for bed now and it's only 8.45 but we have to be up for breakfast at 6am. ... read more

After our heavy negotiating and our too good to be true price we figured that today would be a bit of a let down. How wrong can two people be?!? We were picked up from our hotel in a brand new saloon car with a climate akin to Siberia in January and whisked into the Saigon rush hour. The ride was smooth and we had a little snooze as we drove through the suburbs and south towards the Mekong delta. We drove for around two hours before pulling up next to a bus full of tourists at a dock where various boats were moored. I don't mind telling you my heart sunk a little when we saw some of the same people we toured the cu chi tunnels with yesterday clamber off the bus. We waited ... read more

At about 7.00am the next morning, after a chaotic and very rushed breakfast, we had to make a decision. I was negotiating few extra nights at Green Suites with Long the receptionist when Janie appeared on the stairs and said, ‘Let’s just go for it!’ Still ‘Ohing and Ahing’ we jumped into a minibus, and from Ho Chi Minh City, headed south-west for the Mekong Delta. There were several stops at ‘motorway services’ - banana leaf shacks at the side of the road - which gave some relief to the relentless heat of the confined minibus and enabled Janie to stretch her aching back. The roads were basic to say the least and our little bus bounced and jarred over the numerous bridges. Eventually we arrived in Vinh Long in the heart of the Mekong and ... read more

Geo: 10.71, 105.11DAY TWELVE (1/14/13) — Chau Doc Town At daybreak, we head to an authentic floating market as vendors and shoppers converge. We watch sellers promote their products and view hundreds of boats of all sizes jockey for position. Lots of buying, selling and bartering. We then head over to the fish farms, where we see farmer-fishermen making their own fish food and farming their fish. I am mindful of an Oscar Hammerstein lyric from "South Pacific". Nellie Forbush and the young lieutenant sing: How far away Philadelphia P.A. Princeton N.J. How far are they? From coconut palms and banyan trees and coral sands and Tonkinese How far are they? Life here is so very different than what we know. We are amazed and blessed to have the opportunity to experience it; and more than ... read more
