Good Morning Vietnam! Finally got over the border and off the beaten track down to Phu Quoc island. All very nice and very peaceful, if not a bit too peaceful I had to splash out $16 a night (ouch!!) so I could stay somewhere there were people so I didn't go crazy . Club Tropicana resort, all very Wham. Saying that it was worth it and the beach was lovely and made the most of it by topping up the tan. Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon) next and my word what a journey 2 motorbikes, 3 buses, 1 boat and 2 taxis and 12 and a half hours later, bright lights big city. Only to chat to a couple who had just done the same journey by plane in 45 mins for only $10 more ... read more

The first time I crashed my motorbike I had to check and see if my right foot was still attached to my leg. The second time I crashed my motorbike I had to check and see if I still had all ten fingers. The third time I crashed my motorbike, well I didn’t actually crash it, but that dog still has three good legs… It’s been an interesting last few days cruising the Ho Chi Minh Trail with my vespa posse. To start, its real hard to not feel like a total badass when you’re roaming the countryside on board a cherry red moped that tops out at around 35 kph. Actually I’m only guessing that’s how fast it went because the speedometer was broken as well as the odometer. Come to think of it, of ... read more

We found out a few interesting things about Vietnamese and SE Asian life and culture in general during our games and dinner with Rote. Lets just say it can be very easy to offend the locals if you stick to doing things western-style! - The way we motion 'come here' with our fingers and palms pointing up is reserved for animals only in Asia, so if you want someone to come close without making them out to be a pig wave to them with the palm and fingers pointing down. - While a gentle pat on the head may be endearing and complimentary in the western world its traditionally only done to slaves in Asia. So avoid that head-top ruffling of someones else's hair - its very rude! - In Vietnam girls don't smoke. Only prostitutes ... read more

Da Lat was described in the LP as beautiful misty hilltop town where honeymooners frequently visit. Unfortunately, we were a tad disappointed. The town itself was pretty dank and dull and there appeared to be a lot of construction taking place which had turned the river water an unattractive orange/brown colour. On arrival we had a walk around the town and eventually found a nice coffee shop where we were able to shelter from the torrential rain. Food was great though. The only saving grace during our time in Da Lat was our cooking class with Rote. We met him when we were checking into our hotel, a little 5-foot man, full of enthusiasm and possessing excellent persuasive skills! We were signed up to his cooking class within 10 minutes. That evening Karen, Julia and ... read more

Its COLD!! At 1500m this was the first time in a while that either of us had felt cold. Jeans and tops were dug out from the bottom or our bags and Amy even resorted to a blanket! To be fair though it was a welcome change from continually sweating all day. Da Lat was a strange town. Cheesy is probably the best word for it. Its a popular spot with foreign and vietnamese tourists and it seems that the local authorities are obsessed with turning every attraction in to a mini theme park. At the lake in the centre of town you could hire Swan-shaped pedelos out by the hour, it reminded us of Alton Towers! We hired a motorbike for a couple of days and headed out around the town. Saw a few pagodas ... read more

I took a break from the madness of Saigon to spend a few days in Dalat. Dalat was a French hill station and its cooler weather was a welcome break from the sweltering heat in the rest of Vietnam. This was the first and last time I wore a fleece in Vietnam. Dalat is a nice hilly university town set beside a lake. The city is much quieter than Saigon and is a haven for Vietnamese artists, tourists and honeymooners. I spent several days hanging out there with a Dutch/German guy named Fred. The main attraction of Dalat is the beautiful surrounding countryside, which is full of rolling hills and green forests. The land is very fertile in this region and there are many farms growing berries, coffee, avocados, and numerous other crops. Dalat even produces ... read more

It was great to get out of the heat for a couple of days - we retreated to the mountains and the city of Dalat. The "Easy Riders" are bikers who offer the service of cross-country trips at a whopping $50 a day (not including accommodation or food)...we declined their offer and instead took the watered-down one-day version and soaked in some sites around Dalat... read more

After Hoi An I was a bit tired of cities, having not seen anything but since Laos. So I took an overnight bus that eventually dropped me off at Da Lat, a city further inland that is set amongst the southern highlands, which along with wonderful scenery, provided a welcome respite from the heat. The city itself is not all that exciting, and as the number one tourist destination for Vietnamese, it is quite touristy, but my main enticement was the surrounding countryside, which is pleasantly rugged and on top of being quite scenic. I arrived in the afternoon and did nothing exceptional for the rest of the day because I am always a bit wiped after an all night bus ride. Went to bed early after indulging in some mindless entertainment (MTV Asia of all ... read more

Hi Everyone!! I am back from Vietnam and en route to Hong Kong! I had a great time in Vietnam. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and I stayed a day there with my friends the first night but then we took a bus to another city called Da Lat. It was a six-hour bus ride, not that bad. The first day in Ho Chi Minh, my friend Annee and I went to the local market and bought tons of fabric to get clothes made at a tailor. The fabric was very cheap and there was so much to choose from. We then walked into a random tailor and were able to get our clothes made. I had previously pulled out a bunch of pictures from magazines of clothes that I wanted to get ... read more
