Da Lat was described in the LP as beautiful misty hilltop town where honeymooners frequently visit. Unfortunately, we were a tad disappointed. The town itself was pretty dank and dull and there appeared to be a lot of construction taking place which had turned the river water an unattractive orange/brown colour. On arrival we had a walk around the town and eventually found a nice coffee shop where we were able to shelter from the torrential rain. Food was great though.

The only saving grace during our time in Da Lat was our cooking class with Rote. We met him when we were checking into our hotel, a little 5-foot man, full of enthusiasm and possessing excellent persuasive skills! We were signed up to his cooking class within 10 minutes. That evening Karen, Julia and I made the short trip to Rote’s sister’s house in the town where they had all the fresh ingredients ready to cook. There were meant to be 2 other people joining us but they didn’t turn up… all the more for us! We cooked (well, really watched while Rote’s sister cooked) a delicious meal of beef and vegetables and veggie curry, washed down

with some local strawberry wine. After the meal Rote gave us a great insight into Vietnamese culture and taught us some choice phrases in the language! He was also an apparent expert on drinking games which was a lot of fun. Hopefully we’ll get to share them with some of you when we get home.

To be fair to Da Lat, we didn’t have enough time to do any of the treks/tours that are on offer and I think that it would have been worthwhile to see more of the beautiful views the hill town has to offer. It may not have been our favourite place but it’s definitely worth more exploration...and of course an evening’s cooking with Rote!
