Sleeping like a clubbed baby seal barely making it to the breakfast buffet. There are a couple of other farangs around but generally the resort feels quite low key. After brunch I have to chase the cleaning lady around a bit to have her commit to fixing the laundry. We head down to have a look at the beach. There's plenty of space but the few chairs are already taken so we wander around a bit. The sand looks nice but Kay is a bit skeptical about the quality of the water. It definitely supports a lot of life though. Each little splash brings in lots of small fish and crabs that duck away in small puddles of water on the little rocks that divide the beach into segments. In the afternoon we catch a ride ... read more

After having checked out from the hotel at noon and having a rice dish for brunch at a nearby Thai restaurant we start to think about today's agenda. The plan is to arrive in Khao Lak a bit up the coast north of Phuket island and before we've really given it a lot of thought the answer appears in front of us in the shape of an old little man who offers to drive us around Phuket for the day, and drop us off in Khao Lak for the evening. Perfect! I would like to go down to the Phuket Aquarium by the pier southeast of town, but he tells us the aquarium is currently closed for repairs and offers to take us to the Phuket viewpoint instead. This being a tourist area in Southeast Asia ... read more

“SHOP N SAVE” in Bangkok Shopping and eating were oftened touted as the top agendas for most tourists in bustling Bangkok. Our Asia Hotel was located 1 stop away from the majestic Mah Boon Kroong (MBK) Shopping Complex and a few stops to the Chatuchak Weekend Market in the northern suburbs. This was the age where money is everything and in Bangkok you could probably do this at a fraction of the prices back home. It was no wonder that the girls attempted a 2 day “bloodshed” at Chatuchak Market. I was there for ½ a day and was defeated by the scorching heat and the never ending crowds. The 3 of us took a sky train to Saphan Taksin before transferring to the River Boat to bring us to the Grand Palace compound. It was ... read more

Another sunny day and it is time to inspect one of the famous Phuket beaches. Since neither of us has any idea where would be most interesting to go we decide more or less on random to choose Patong Beach and find a songthaew to take us there. The countryside road continues out of Phuket town into the hills and starts to slither up a hillside overlooking a valley below, and it reminds me that Phuket island is more than just a conglomerate of beach resorts. The tranquil midday heat is soon overcome by the noise and chaos of traffic and crowds of tourists along the Patong beach road, we've arrived in the middle of it alright. The place is like a gigantic ant colony, the streets lined with shops stacked on top of each other, ... read more

Today we begin our trip south. After packing my things Kay picks me up at the hotel and we transfer to Don Muang airport. There's not a whole lot to do over at the domestic terminal so while we wait we visit the stand of a travel agent to check if he has any good lodging in Khao Lak, where we intend to go in a couple of days. He tells me accommodation is pretty much fully booked nearing the New Year and gets on the phone to talk to a colleague of his, presumably over there. The call begins to drag out, and he asks us when our plane departs. I tell him no problem, we still don't have to leave in the next 20 minutes. Well, the time starts flying, and he picks up ... read more

So, I have finally arrived in Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanu Kamprasit, the city which so many of my fellow Swedes have already discovered. The flight lands in the early afternoon and the heat can be felt through the airport walls, and what is that strange smell? (The Don Muang air has a very special character that I've since come to appreciate more and more). After passing through immigration my friend Kay picks me up on her way back from the office, which is nearby. She's suggested and reserved a room for me at the Karnmanee Palace (a nice hotel which has since become a favourite stay of mine) where I can dump my bags and take a much ... read more

Journey to the Land of Smiles (25 - 29 December 2003) Part 1: Inspection Report 7 of us went to Bangkok during Christmas 2 years ago. It happened at the time when budget carriers were unheard of in Singapore. The cheapest flight then operated on graveyard hours by SAS. We were pushed all the way to the late 10.10pm flight on Christmas Day 2003. It was simply filled to the brim of eager Singaporeans intending to make a "bloodshed" in Bangkok. The Cheapest Flight (Scandinavian Airlines) The cheapest option didn't mean lousy. At least, SAS had proven that. Ok the ang moh stewardess who served us was clearly aging, the baguette served on board is well uninteresting. But at least there was edible food & we had our personal inflight entertainment within our own comfort ... read more

I returned to Bangkok, this time for five nights. Initially I had great difficulty finding the enthusiasm to do anything other than sleep or read, knowing that my time here was really just to fill in before I left for Singapore and my flight to Australia. However the day after I arrived was the King's Birthday, and in Thailand they really love their king. Around 2 million people had converged on the small park in front of the Grand Palace to hear the speech by the Prime Minister, watch the fireworks and enjoy - if that word can be applied - the Thai boxing. Not willing to look cowardly in front of two guys from my hostel, I joined them in making my way into the crowd. There were literally peoplecrushed against you in all directions, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya December 4th 2003

From Kanchanaburi I travelled to Ayuthaya, a small city just north of Bangkok. Ayuthaya was once the capital of the Siam Empire - ( which I never got the dates written down so will add in later. Damn!! This is why I should write these at the time) Littered all around the city there were ageless ruins and Wats (temples) from this time, many destroyed by the Burmese before the fall of the Siam empire. It was strange to walk out of the traffic straight into the relative silence of a semi destroyed temple, and be faced by rows upon rows of Buddha statues built into the walls. Silent sentinals watching all. I say this - many had actually had their heads stolen or removed and put into museums to prevent this - it still felt ... read more
