Can you say "mosquito breeding facility"?
Sleeping like a clubbed baby seal barely making it to the breakfast buffet. There are a couple of other farangs around but generally the resort feels quite low key. After brunch I have to chase the cleaning lady around a bit to have her commit to fixing the laundry. We head down to have a look at the beach. There's plenty of space but the few chairs are already taken so we wander around a bit. The sand looks nice but Kay is a bit skeptical about the quality of the water. It definitely supports a lot of life though. Each little splash brings in lots of small fish and crabs that duck away in small puddles of water on the little rocks that divide the beach into segments. In the afternoon we catch a ride up to the main street. Apparently Khao Lak is split in two parts, and this smaller area is just a string of resorts along a straight road going north to south. There's a small centre of gravity where there's a concentration of eateries, souvenir shops, a small market and some diving shops. You mainly see westerners walking around the area. I didn't see any touting

The busy Khao Lak main street...
at all, except for some ridiculously expensive pick up taxi fares.

We have dinner outside at a small Thai restaurant, and we're pretty much the only guests around. It seems that a significant number of the tourist population has already headed out to the Similan islands nature reserve for the new year. And tomorrow we will be next!
