Friends for a meal are easy to find, friends until the end of life are difficult to find… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling northeast from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong (via Chiang Rai). We were awake at 5:30am. We had an early start to Chiang Khong, and we had to organise our packs and pick up some breakfast beforehand. I headed out to a nearby 7-Eleven store to pick up some banana muffins and Thai milk tea, as it was too early to settle at a café. It was enough to get us started for the day. We checked out of the People Place Hotel (our accommodation for the past two nights in Chiang Mai), jumped into a minibus and sped off towards Chiang Rai at 8am sharp. It didn’t take long ... read more

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were continuing to explore the tranquil city of Chiang Mai. I woke early and used the quiet morning stillness to proofread and edit a work-related quotation request we’d received hours before leaving Australia, and one that I so desperately wanted to finish. We left our hotel (the People Place Hotel) at 8:30am in search of a breakfast café that had been recommended in our Lonely Planet guide, but alas, couldn’t find it. We received some very helpful directions from a young local boy on his way to school, although I should point out that he had no choice in the matter. We’d actually approached his friendly mother for directions, and she told him to ... read more

We finally made it through our long flights none the worse for wear, and were very glad to arrive in Phon Phisai, at Jeremy Holton and his wife Waree's house on the banks of the Mekong River. When they're not here they live in Perth, together with their three sons, the youngest of whom is Cody aged 4. We're getting in practice for when we see Alexander again in a couple of weeks, who is also 4. Jeremy teaches a particular drawing technique using oil pastels. Quick thumbnail sketches of scenes, choose one, transfer it to a large piece of paper and colour it with thick layers of oil pastels beginning with light colours. It is supposed to be done quickly without thinking too much and looking for patches of colours. Covering it all over with ... read more

After an early morning flight from Bangkok to Krabi then a two hour minibus ride we arrived on the gorgeous island of Ko Lanta. It's the third time we've been here. So why do we keep coming back? You may well ask. The world is a big place and we intend to go and explore more of it very soon but for now its great to take some time out in a place we know so well and love. We rolled up to the reception of Best House and the owner came out. She instantly recognised us from three years ago and greeted us warmly. She knew about the booking but hadn't put a name to the face. We dropped our gear in the room and went to the mini mart to buy cold water. The ... read more

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were travelling north from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Having spent the morning exploring Bangkok’s khlongs (canals) in a long wooden boat and ambling through the serene but crowded Wat Pho temple complex, we returned to Siam Champs-Elyseesi Unique Hotel to prepare for our overnight train to Chiang Mai. We settled on thick wooden chairs in a comfy hotel alcove and worked on our travel notes, only venturing into the searing afternoon heat to pick up some snacks from a nearby 7-Eleven store. It was a great place to reflect on our time in Bangkok, and to prepare for our northward journey. In the late afternoon (around 4pm) we jumped into a minibus ... read more

Wait until the tree has fallen before you jump over it… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... Today we were continuing to explore the bustling city of Bangkok. Having explored a few old haunts on our first day in Bangkok, we’d succumbed to jet lag and crashed early, which often occurs when travel exhaustion and unrelenting heat collide. It’s such a heady mix. But here I was, wide awake at 3:30am the following morning, my body clock struggling to adjust to Indochina Time. I decided to start work on a quotation request we’d received hours before leaving Australia. It was a major project, and one we couldn’t ignore. Unfortunately, the submission deadline was 29 January – the day before our return flight home. I had to prepare it as we travelled through Thailand and Laos, and my ... read more

This morning we woke up with a desperate need to drink fresh young coconut milk, and a new mission was born. I once watched locals in Indonesia shimmering up coconut trees, and my 16 year old monkey brain kept telling me “I can do that”. So Bev and I jump on our scooters, scrutinize the landscape, check every tree, and finally we spot the young green coconuts. There they are: all piled, one on top of the other, at a road side food stall. I could not believe our good fortune! I did not have to travel the jungle, worrying about snakes and all sorts of creepy crawlers, and climb a 40 foot tree in pursuit of young coconuts as temperatures quickly soared up to a balmy 27 degrees ? Now the next difficult task presents ... read more

There are no short cuts to any place worth going… ~ Thai Proverb HE SAID... We touched down at Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok) at 5:30am, and we were seriously excited. We were about to embark on our Thailand and Laos adventure. It took us a while to navigate the large crowds at the customs counters, but it wasn’t too arduous. When we finally found the first floor exit (after some well-meaning but inaccurate advice sent us in the wrong direction), we caught a public bus to Banglamphu in the heart of Bangkok. It was a great (and cheap) way to travel into the chaotic city, and our stress levels dropped considerably when the friendly ticket attendant promised to let us know when our stop was coming up. We clambered off the bus, donned our packs and tried ... read more

We are once again in Bangkok. Our first day was mostly spent with a quick swim in the pool, a meander along the streets just to see what had changed and then lounging around in the air con room. We were suffering from a bad dose if jet lag which is unusual for us but it was probably due to dehydration. On the seond leg of our flight from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok we were trapped in our seat. We had the window seat and the middle seat. A lovely young Thai lady was allocated the aisle seat. She smiled sweetly as she sat down and then promptly pulled down the tray table, plonked her I pad on it and plugged in her ear phones. As usual with anyone from this area of the world , ... read more

HE SAID... We weren’t meant to be travelling to Thailand and Laos, but a series of events fortuitously conspired to send us to the northern climes of these two Southeast Asian countries. In November 2017 we booked a trip to Colombia. We were scheduled to travel in April 2018, and we were excited. However, a client asked us to undertake a major project in the first half of 2018, so we had to cancel Colombia. We were lucky enough to travel to Eastern Europe later in the year, and our adventures in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria were fantastic, so we didn’t regret the change of plan. In September 2019 we booked a trip to Colombia. We were scheduled to travel in March 2020, and we were excited. However, a client asked us to undertake a major ... read more
