This blog contains 134 (yep 134!) photos. To view all of them scroll down and turn the pages. I'll be adding videos to this blog so check back! Up before dawn I drove from Kho Lanta to meet up with the Six Senses people at the Phuket Airport. The drive was fantastic with Krabi Provence being it's lovely self. With no real time issues I was able to make a couple of stops, enjoy views, and purchase some interesting woven fish traps. Being that my car had accumulated unavoidable dings and scrapes, I was nervous to see what the financial damage was going to be. Amazingly the rental dude looked it over, smiled and handed me my reciept....whew. The people from Six Senses were waiting upon me when I arrived. They had matching celery colored linen ... read more

Koh Yao Noi is an island village east of Phuket and west of Krabi. Mostly Muslim, there is no alcohol allowed in town, the call to prayer is heard in the mornings and the evenings, and most women cover their heads (though it seems few cover their entire faces and bodies). Although we came on a lead of some great opportunities for a multi-day kayak trip, we were not successful in our pursuit. Because it is not yet high season, many of the outfitters are not yet renting out camping gear. In addition, it turns out that some of the prime islands are currently hot spots for the bird nests that apparently are exported to china as a gourmet delicacy. We were advised that it was dangerous to camp on these islands because of the high ... read more

Location: Some ridiculous hotel that apparently the Beckhams have stayed at and Brad Pitt.... not sure if his partner was here as well. Reason: Honeymoon. I left the UK, coming up to 5 years ago; best decision of my life. I had no money, but a large overdraft and 3 unused credit cards. 4 and a bit years later, I live in Bangkok, and manage one of the poshest health clubs in Asia. I got married, and have managed to blag myself all the way to the nicest hotel (and possibly view) I have been to. I've lived in Thailand for the last year and a bit. Before that, I had visited maybe 4-5 times. Never have I heard of Koh Yao Noi, but as you will see in the coming blogs, this sits well in ... read more

After leaving Mike and Kari and Koh Ngai, we were heading north to another small island (this time with roads) called Koh Yao Yai. Our journey there was a bit of a trek for not really being to far away, it was just a bit harder to get to. From Koh Ngai we caught a 9:30am speedboat back to Koh Lanta and had time for lunch at the pier at our usual spot for the best Pad Thai and pineapple fried rice. From here, we got on a larger ferry that was heading to Railay Beach. Of course being on Thai time it didn't leave on time and was almost an hour late leaving so we were a bit worried about catching our connecting boat to Koh Yao. No need to worry though as they seem ... read more

We left Hyderbad to fly to Bangkok on a very short red-eye, landed at 4:55AM and then took another flight to Phuket from Bangkok. It was very surprising to see the very large Boeing 747 used for such a short flight (1h). It took us another 45 minutes in the car and 30 mins on a speedboat to arrive at the secluded and isolated island of Koh Yao. We jumped off the boat to the beach and were welcomed by the hotel manager Niina, who is from Finland and with whom we became great friends during out stay. We checked into Elixir Resort, situated in the south part of the island and consisting of beach bungalows. Our hut was on the hill and included a beautiful patio, plunge pool and an outdoor shower! The resort was ... read more

HE SAID... We left Ao Nang at 11.30am in an air conditioned minibus to travel to the Tha Lane pier to catch a ferry to Koh Yao Noi. We arrived at 12.15pm, but the ferry we were meant to catch had been cancelled, so we caught a local speedboat instead. We left at 1pm and arrived at the island at 1.30pm. We caught a songthaew (small pickup truck/ute with seats in the tray) to our bungalow retreat which was located just across the road from the beach. We lunched at 2pm. I had yum pla hmik (Thai style squid salad) and Ren had goong pad kao pod(stir fried prawns with baby corn). The food was great. We finished the meal with coffee and watermelon shakes. We considered hiring bikes to ride around the island and we ... read more

Man ... read more

September 16, 2010 On our final day at the resort we finally got off the resort property. We had breakfast and then met our tuk tuk driver for the morning. Man, one of the local employees of the resort went along as our guide. The Island is small, but quite hilly in the interior. The jungle is to the north, the west side of the island contains the rice fields and spread throughout the island are rubber plantations. Our first stop on the tour was in fact a rubber plantation. They were not working today as you cannot harvest the rubber after it rains. Rubber is harvested much like maple service is in Vermont. A small bucket is attached to the tree; however, while maple is the actual sap, rubber is from the bark. So ... read more

September 15, 2010. At about 1 in the morning, we both are awakened to torrential rain. I mean it is coming down so hard, you think we might float a way. We have experienced rain while here, but nothing like this. We were beginning to believe that the monsoon was a myth. But it is not, it came in the night, and it came with a fury. It poured for a good two hours, the occasional roar of the thunder would over power the noise of the rain. Then as suddenly as it came, it went. We returned to our slumber, only to be roused by round 2 of the Southwest Monsoon. The rain came straight down, no wind another two hours of solid rain, and again it suddenly just stopped, no gradually change to ... read more
