My three day rock climbing course was arranged to allow for a rest day, two days consecutive climbing, a rest day and then the final and third days climbing. On my 'rest day' however we decided to Kayak around Hong Island and do a bit of snorkeling. It was a good day out tied in with a bit of a boat trip to a lagoon and some deserted islands as well. Whilst kayaking around the island we pulled up by a kind of cave area and started to get our snorkels out for our first exploration into the water when I realised that I was about to dive on top of a sea snake, it was right beside us just weaving about on the waters surface. These are venomous and can kill so I'm told, but ... read more

On Boxing day we set off early for Krabi, over the over side of Thailand on the Andaman Coast. It was an early start as we were to be picked up at 6:30 in the morning. Not sure how it happened, but the alarm clock failed to awake us and we finally woke at 6:15 instead of the planned 5:30 we had agreed on the night before. The trip was relatively straight forward. A mini van from Chewang to the main port of Na-than. Then everyone is loaded on to a coach only for it to drive round the corner to the boat, where everybody is off loaded again to walk on the car ferry! Once on the mainland it's back on the coach for a non stop trip to Krabi. And I mean non stop! ... read more

Happy Boxing day every one! Well yesterday i did have fried rice and chicken for my christmas dinner and some spring rolls , didnt have a late night though, was more christmassy on christmas eve really, had a nice time though. This morning we headed out on another boat trip, this time to the phi phi islands, they were gorgeous. We went to maya bay, pilah bay, lousami, monkey bay..viking cave, ermm cant remember.. lots though. We stopped to go snorkelling in the open sea (relised im not too good at snorkling) i cant breathe with the mask on outside the water, let alone with my head under water, and it was a bit choppy so me and Nat spent a lot of the time hung onto the side of the boat bobbing up and down ... read more

Hi everyone, Merry Christmas!! not got much of mine left to go and you'll all just be tucking into your dinners when im writing this no doubt . Havn't had our christmas dinner yet, but we are thinking of splashing out and having spring rolls as a starter and a banana pancake for pudding along with just the usual rice, it is christmas after all . Last night there was lots of christmas music everywhere, alot of the big hotels had entertainment on and there were fireworks so we're hoping its the same tonight. We went to the bar close to ours last night which had a fireshow (the fire got a bit to close to me for my liking, but no singed eyebrows so we're ok!) we met three people from israel who taught us ... read more

For the last few days, or weeks to be exact, everyone around me has been frantically shopping, baking and generally preparing for Christmas. What have I been doing? Sitting back and dreaming of far distant places, blue seas and sun kissed white sand beaches. Yes, at last, our long awaited dream was about to be fulfilled and just to make it even more perfect Sharon and Scott were going to join us on 'their island' of Ko Phi Phi, Thailand. We arrived at Krabi Airport after nearly 22 hours of travelling and marched outside expecting to be bombarded with taxi touts. Not one in sight! where were they when you needed one? It turned out the only option was to go back inside and queue up at the official desk and be prepared to pay the ... read more

Hi all, its christmas eve! We got to Krabi yesterday, the place we are staying will be just perfect for christmas, its a bit out of the way but a walk never hurt anyone. The beach is gorgeous and the scenery on the way here was equally impressive, lush green forests and the odd buffalo . Today was spent laid out on the quiet long sandy beach, we stayed until the tide went out and walked along watching the orange sunset while collecting pretty shells. I would definatly recommend spending christmas eve this way . Its weird hearing jingle bells and seeing santa hats in the middle of thailand, but nice too. Tomorrow we're getting a long boat to spend christmas on a remote beach, Phrang nang cave. Even with all the sun i definalty have ... read more

Unless you saw it, you would never know what goes into making coconut shreds. It takes hours (at least here, with no machinery and fancy equipment). First, the ladies take off the brown hair around the coconut, then they crack it. They will straddle a stool that has a blade at the very end. By sitting on this stool, they are keeping this round blade there. There is a metal bowl underneath that will catch the coconut shreds as she grinds the coconut against the blade, turns the coconut and then continues to use the blade to grind the coconuts. It looked quite hard, and I am reminded that I can simply get a can of coconut milk for .99 cents or buy it already shredded with no problem. Mathew and I are still in Tonsai, ... read more

On our way to Tonsai, Mathew and I picked up a friend. Andrew was a South African teaching English in Taiwan. He was vacationing at the moment, and we all stayed together to save money so accomodations would be "cheap cheap." There was a price to pay in Tonsai, and it's paid in blood. I was attacked by mosquitoes quicker than I could swat. One morning, from simply rolling out of bed to walking to breakfast, I got 16 mosquito bites on my right leg alone. Needless to say, I made a great investment in "OFF" spray. That and "Tiger Balm" to calm the skin if I missed a spot with Deet. "Deet me up, Scotty!" The more the deet, the happier I was. Well, I can't say I was happy when we first got to ... read more

We arrived in Koh Tao following an overnight bus trip from Bangkok followed by a 1 hr ferry crossing. Koh Tao is on of the least developed South Thailand Islands, more popular with divers than backpackers. We stayed at the rather luxurious Coral View Resort, in a bungalow on stilts. The resort had an exclusive beach (see pic) with great snorkeling - especially at Shark Island, just 300m off shore - many friendly tropical fish (see pic) and a friendly dog (who of course Nat called Sandy) who came in to swim with us (see pic). The island has only a couple of tarmacked roads and the gorgeous bays and resorts are accessible only via treacherous dirt tracks accessible using the 4X4’s or dirt bikes for hire. So we hired a moped! We made it to ... read more

We are slowly moving down in our standards of overnight train journeys. Our latest (11 hours from Bangkok en route to Krabi) was a compartment/dormitory with around 20 beds each with a curtain; this was Matt’s favourite so far as he felt like he was in a den!! Our fellow passengers were a friendly enough gang though the relaxed atmosphere was ruined somewhat by the middle aged German couple who stood drinking in the area just outside our compartment shouting “it’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll and I like it” whilst throwing beer bottles onto the tracks, later they actually smashed the window of the train door, the Thais in our compartment had no hesitation in pointing the finger. We arrived at 5.30am and faced an hour and a half wait for the bus to take us ... read more
