OK, so in reality I know absolutely NOTHING about International soccer. My knowledge, though limited, of sport is pretty much relevant to the NHL, and maybe some little league sports in my home town. But, nonetheless, I am a sports fan all the way. There is something so pure and raw about the passion behind a game. It is powerful and consequential, and yet one can really let it go in the end. WIn or lose, it is not "real life" (and yes, I am a passionately devoted team fan, and I understand this is not COMPLETELY true...but there is always next year, as painful as those words may be). But people become so intimate in a setting such as this. It is a powerful, fascinating thing, and I love every bit of it. I had ... read more

Colin writes: Its been awhile since our last 'Seoul' entry, and this may be the last. The family Payne/Pearn will be returning from Thailand in a few days which means I lose this laptop computer (as it'll be sent home with Cindy and Daryl). Kinda sad for me. Being on my own here in Seoul, I've become quite attached to this machine. It’s my lifeline to the world. Actually, it's kinda sad how many hours have been spent in frnt of this thing. Lately, I have been reading blogs of travelers in Southeast Asia for information (and inspiration), organizing Visas, checking the weather of various countries (including home), and watching Oilers hockey LIVE. By the way, I attribute the success of the Oilers to my being here. It worked for the Eskimos…and it’s going to work ... read more

It's a must see. You need to do it, get the t-shirt, like the pyramids or the Great Wall. It is the thing people ask you if you saw when you go to Korea. So I climbed my sleepy suburban ass out of bed bright and early and took the bus to the big ol' city in a wild pack of teachers, all chomping at the bit for a bit of "fresh air". Everyone said it would be a long day. Uh, yep, they were right. Apparently they needed to tell Jen that staying out all night drinking the night before would significantly increase the length of the day. It begins at dawn, quite literally, and slowly works its way throught the day. I believe the buss pulled back into the USO station in Seoul around ... read more

I got up early this morning so Mr Kwon could drive me back to the airport. I tried to ask him if, say, any buses happened to pass by through airport square but he was very insistant on taking me back to the airport. He couldn't seem to get it out of his head that I was actually going to stay put in South Korea, that I wasn't actually just there for an overnight stopover. So I gave up trying to explain the whole thing and just let him drive me back to the airport. He helped me out of the van, along with my rucksack, and pointed to 'Departures' insisting, "You go there!" Then he drove off. I was at the Incheon International Airport which is technically in Incheon, but not really. Incheon, the real ... read more

Most of today was taken up with my unGodly all day flight (from 7am - 9pm, with a swapover in Hong Kong). The second plane ride which was spent sitting behind a man who just couldn't live without crushing my knees. I always get the seat behind the one person who will push his seat back. Then, he started stretching his hands all the way over his head rest and leaving his hands right in front of my little seat TV. I watched Memoirs Of A Geisha with some creepy man's hand in the way. It's the only way to watch it. When I landed there was a lot of confusion. Confusion was to be the basis for my time in Korea. The airport is on an island, on a piece of reclaimed land, far away ... read more

Hi guys! I've decided that instead of sending everyone group emails while I'm away, I'd subscribe to this Travelblog site. This way, you guys will all get an update whenever I update the site, but it's up to you as to whether or not you want to check it out, and hear about my latest adventures. So with that said, just a quick update for everyone. After a 30-something hour day (over 14 of which were spent in the air) Mark and I have arrived in Incheon, South Korea. We have a 24 hour layover here before our last leg of the journey into Bangkok, Thailand. So far, everything has been great. With the help of one too many travel pills I slept for more than 9 of the hours in flight, and the hotel that ... read more

What a day. This is the kind of day that makes me think I can handle being here for a long time. This is the kind of day that balances out the homesick, hate the rudeness of pushy Koreans, tired of the crappy air quality, kind of days. Out in the fresh air of the mountain at 6 in the morning with other Koreans, smiling, happy....out in the open air of a park with happy, smiling, laughing kids. I wish everyday could be a picnic day. ... read more

So, in the fall Yonsei has a huge sports day. It is so big that they have a fairly large sort of pep rally to celebrate several months before the big day. This event it called Akaraka. Over 20,000 students pour into an arena dressed in all blue and white (Yonsei colors). They let out their school spirit through songs and cheers. Since Yonsei is one of the most prominent schools in Korea, school spirit is something they definitely have, unlike Maryville. It is so big in fact that some of Korea’s most famous and popular singers come as the entertainment. People brought blue towels to swing in the air; they wore red, light-up devil horns; they set off sparklers and when all of the sparklers went out, turned on their cell phones and waved them ... read more

I will be leaving to Gwangju, S. Korea around June 12th, and I need advice on what essentials to bring and what I should leave behind. So far, I have gathered that deodorant, toothpaste, and other toiletries are very expensive there, and I should pack a year's supply...true? I've also been reading a lot of blogs that say the weather is very unstable...one day it's hot, the next day freezing. If I don't pack a lot of clothes, are there places that sell clothes at a decent price, or should I pack as much as possible? I don't have a lot of family here, so I am pretty much selling most of my things. I can get by with pretty little, but I also don't want to end up paying $20 for a simple product I ... read more

This is not really a travel entry but a move entry. See I moved (my 3rd time since I’ve been here) into a new apartment last week. Which is weird because I had a lease until August, but the owner decided to sell? Well I found a place by Eunpa Lake were I run and were the Cherry Blossoms are. It is a true 3 bedroom apartment, and one of the bedrooms actually has a built in closet. The view is kind of better, if I look to the right there is a hill with some trees and if I look to the left I can see Eunpa Lake, if I look straight I look onto another apartment complex. Parking is worse here. You Tennessee park (back into your spot), when all those spots are taken ... read more
