Palawan, Philippines - October 3 - 12, 2008 Only 9 days here but this incredible paradise deserves a chapter all to itself. We flew to Puerto Princesa from Cebu City and were immediately impressed with an efficient little airport, a clean city and a courteous and helpful tricycle driver (what they call tuk-tuks here). Very high quality crafts and two excellent restaurants here. We toured Honda Bay on an island hopper and did some snorkelling that was only OK due to cloudy water. But we saw some interesting fish and the beaches were superb. We then headed to The Underground River at Sabang, sharing a van with fellow travellers Rory and Ferry Rose. The river cave is truly a boat trip to remember with monster caverns, stalactites and stalagmites of enormous sizes. There is a vote ... read more

Efforts to explain gravity have been carried out by various civilizations since at least the eighth century BC in India. Since then the Greeks, the Arabs and the Persians along with various others have all had a shot at explaining why fruits falling from trees go down rather than up. In 1687 Isaac Newton hypothesized the inverse-square law of universal gravitation which was later slightly updated by Einstein's law of general relativity. Anyway, enough of that. We all know that everything, everywhere exerts a gravitational pull on everything else, the biggest pull being exerted by the planet itself, hence why anything you drop falls down instead of up. Every molecule, every atom everywhere must obey these rules. But not, apparently, in the Bacuit Archipelago. Our boat sails past a mountain of twisted, jagged limestone structures protruding ... read more

If you hate white sandy beaches and clear blue-green seas don't come here Palawan is the most westward island in The Philippines and it definitely does have a frontier feel about it - its ruggedly beautiful, a long fairly skinny rainforested ridge with beaches dotted all up and down the coast on either side and hundreds of little islands scattered around. The roads are mostly shite and the electricity supply is pretty limited and sporadic, but as a result it has a much more "authentic" feel than Bohol. So, we flew into Puerto Princesa and did a day trip up to Sapang to visit the Underground River, which is 8km long, but you only go in about 2km. The entire trip is brilliant. 2 hours on a crappy road and you get to this amazing beach ... read more

I'm used to do only one entry per place...and Miniloc is just 30 minutes by boat to Lagen Island. A fun transfer, as you put your swim suit one, and let the staff take care of everything else. 30 minutes...plus the sighting of dolphins, sorry, they were just a little too far away for great pics. A first sighting for Ma'ri...and the comment of Leslie...well... guess...Papa, they were a lot more in Maldives last year...spoiled kid! Lagen is supposed to be more luxury than Miniloc. To put it straight, the staff in Miniloc were so amazing, than us and some other guest ended "imported with them" some of the staff from Miniloc. But our room....wow...above the water....overwater bungalow...a first for me...and for Ma'ri and Leslie... 1st of October was a special day for us. Ma'ri and ... read more

It's October holidays in China. The all country closes for the full week, so we are off to paradise. This was nearly a perfect week...if the markets didn't crash and sent me straight to my computer hoping everything would calm out pretty fast...tuff times in the world are waiting ahead of us, hope we'll manage! Last year October holidays were a great family ones with my parents and Leslie in the Maldives...this year, it's should be one of our last chinese october holidays as we may move closer to better weather ( and better diving) sooner than later... But first of all, it's our first holiday week with Ma'ri and Leslie...a week of joy, cuddles, bubbles, diving and mainly love! Leslie and Ma'ri took the flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong on their own Friday ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Cacnipa Island September 20th 2008

From now onwards, whenever I picture paradise, I will picture Cacnipa. We got here the long way from Sabang -Jeepney from Sabang to Salbation, Van from Salbation to San Vincente, boat from San Vincente to Port Barton, and then finally, a boat from Port Barton to Cacnipa. But BOY was it worth the effort! (-you can also take the far more time efficient and less hassel way and take a boat straight there from Sabang...) We were welcomed by a stretch of soft white sand, palm trees and water so clear we could see the coral dancing under the waves as the boat passed over it. The whole island seems to be sureal. I don't know how a place like this has managed to stay such a secret for so long. We shared the island with ... read more

My usual question, unanswered by these -- by most -- travel books, is: How did you get there? Even without the suggestion of a motive, a prologue is welcome, since the going is often as fascinating as the arrival. -Paul Theroux, To the Ends of the Earth And, in our decision to try and save a few pesos, this was truely the case in getting to **** Island. There were 2 options to get to the remote island from Sabang. 1: We could take a 2,5 hr boat ride for P1000 if there were more than 2 of us, or we could hire the boat for P4000. 2: We could take a jeepney to Salbation, and then catch the Jeepney from Salbation to Port Barton, and from Port Barton, so the boatmen in Sabang said, it ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Sabang September 17th 2008

It seems that travelling in the Philippines first involves learning to wake up early. By 7am we found ourselves still dazed and pre-coffee on the early jeepney riding the notoriously bad "abortion road" to Sabang. The island of Palawan is often touted as "The last Fronteir" of the Philippines for its rugged undeveloped-ness. The jeepney was absolutely packed, loaded with goods, produce, and people on the roof. It actually turns out that the road is not all that bad. Most of it is on concrete, and they are busy sealing the rest. I guess as with all things, "bad" roads are relative, but after travelling around Southern Africa, most recently with a crazy trip on the wrong road to Hole-in-the-wall and our honeymoon in Mozambique, we were pleasantly surprised. The dirt parts are still pretty bumpy ... read more
