Dad, Nancy and I arrived Thursday morning in Puerto Princessa, Palawan. Woo Hoo! It was about 27 degrees celcius when we landed and humid as hell. Nancy had a stellar sleep (as she says) the night before we left (her first night in Manila) but I on the other hand only had about four hours sleep before we left. Dad, Nancy, Ann and I decided to have some drinks on the porch after dinner and after Nancy and I had packed for Palawan. Dad went to bed around 9:20p and Nancy retired not long after but was a complete trooper. Ann and I decided to polish off the rest of the Grey Goose that night - hehe. We were just sitting and talking when we saw my dad come down stairs fully dressed. I started to ... read more

1. Finally get some serious tanning done on the picture perfect beach of Port Barton. It was about time! 2. Join a bonfire party of local boatmen and a few random foreigners on the beach. Grill fish and drink rum with Nestea. When sufficiently drunk, singalong to a campfire version of Zombie, the ever lasting Philippino favourite. 3. Try finding yet another waterfall and a white beach. Fail miserably but hey, there are many more to come. 4. Remain in an oblivious state for a few days as there's no internet connection nor coverage for the phone. Wonder when was the last time when you actually managed to stay out of it all for so long. Then gorge on a two day old newspaper, the Philippine Inquirer, when you finally manage to find one. 5. On ... read more

1. Spit dust after the trying bus ride and check into a nipa hut on the beach. 2. Meet your new neighbour, Steve, whose Hebrew name is Erin, a Hollywood born bum who lives on social supplement and voted for McCain. Act respectfully when he tells you that he's been travelling for 19 years with the money the government gives him and has been to 43 countries. Let him believe that you think it is an achievement as if you didn't have more flags under your belt. Then learn all about his years in Amsterdam and he's undying love for prostitutes there. 1. Go see the crocodile farm and butterfly garden. Then read in your obscure German guidebook that the third captive attraction of the surroundings of Puerto Princesa is a penintentary farm. Wonder whether human prisoners would be less dull than crocodiles. 2. Hangout with some local kids who are strangely proud of the fact that their school is "celebrating its centennial" and the authorities are going to build "a centennial gate" to commemorate it. Then discuss their parents getting divorced. Let the kids guide you around and finally to the baywalk. Enjoy sunset there. 3. Have Mexican for dinner. Seafood would have been too obvious a solution as it's supposed to be superb here. 4. Humiliate yourself at the videoke bar while getting absolutely hammered on rum. 5. Get two hours of sleep before taking a ... read more

Widely considered as the Philippines’ final frontier, Palawan could very much be the microcosm of the whole country. It packs so much in such a narrow strip of land everything the Philippines has to offer but has relatively less tourists, thereby making it easier to have an off-the-beaten-track feeling. On the northernmost tip of Palawan is the Calamian Archipelago, where Busuanga Island - its largest island - is located. Famed for its superb wreck diving sites, Busuanga also boasts of picturesque sceneries, good swimming, and worthwhile hiking trips for a fun-filled weekend. We had our two-day Coron-Calauit trip on November 1-2 this year, departing Manila in the afternoon of October 31 via Super Ferry. (Super Ferry departs Manila every Friday on the way to Puerto Princesa and stops at Coron Saturday morning before leaving for the ... read more

Monday 22 September to Sunday 2 November Phillipines and its islands (7,107!) has been a real highlight of our trip to South East Asia so far and we strongly recommend it to everyone. We found stunning beaches, coral reefs teeming with fish, waterfalls, few tourists and friendly locals. We spent most of our time on Palawan Island (Puerto Princesa, Sabang, Port Barton, El Nido, Coron) and also visited Manila and the rice terraces and villages of North Luzon (Sagada, Tinglayan and Batad). Highlights The karaoke-mad and friendly Philippinos, who break out into (mostly very out of tune) songs at the drop of a hat. Colourfully decorated Jeepneys (American-style jeeps converted to taxis) + motorbikes with sidecars: the super funky way to travel! Walking tour of old Manila with a very enthusiastic actor-guide, bringing its amazing ... read more

Not quite being able to face the full 36 hour journey back to Palawan which the previous time had been across VERY rough seas we decided to break the journey in the little-known Cuyo islands halfway in between Palawan and Panay in the Sulu Sea. I had got of the boat for an hour the previous time to discover friendly locals, few restaurants, no cars and a relaxed sun-drenched atmosphere that, despite a lack of tourist attractions other than a seventeenth-century Spanish fort, tempted us back for a stay of a few days. What we discovered this time was quite different; the harsh, near maddening winds known as the Amihan had blown up shortly after our last visit and would apparently be ravaging the isles for the next six months. It gave the whole place a ... read more

We arrived at 4 a.m. at Manila airport, where we had to wait four and a half hours to catch our next flight to Puerto Princesa, capital of Palawan Island. The 'arrival hall' was one of the smallest I've ever seen, with just one luggage belt it certainly was getting crowded, having just 2 airplanes landed of which one being an Philippines Airlines Boeing 737..... When we finally had our bags we took our first tricycle to our guesthouse. It was a very nice place, with a massive garden / courtyard and everything done in wood. After a much needed shower and some food, we decided it was time for our first beach; There wasn't a whole lot of choice apart from Honda Bay, for which it was a little too late in the day to ... read more

I haven't written for quite a while and I'm happy to say it's because I've been having the time of my life. I think the last time I posted on here I was in El Nido town . Immediately after writing we found ourselves in a videoke bar, as you do, sitting centre front singing away happily with a few bottles of Red Horse and San Mig Lite. We spoke to a few of the other patrons, one guy in particular was called 'Bilog' (roughly translated as 'circle' or 'round' in Tagalog), we later found out from his sister that he was stuck with this nickname because he was such a chubby baby. Anyway...we became quite territorial with the videoke as the night drew on, getting annoyed when anyone else put song requests in. We were ... read more

I met up with Cha in Manila last Wednesday evening and we had a late night chilling and catching up about our travels. It's really nice to see a familiar face and to share my stories with someone in person. By 11am on Thursday morning we had checked into our flight at the new cenntenial airport in Manila to catch our flight to Puerto Princesa in Palawan. Apart from being slightly delayed the short flight went off without a hitch and we were like giddy school girls from the excitement of being in a new place. We checked into a hotel near the bay in Puerto and spent the evening exploring the town. We heard the seafood here is great so we were both up for getting our hands on that for dinner and we agreed ... read more
