I have been meaning to write about Manila, the capital of the Philippines which I have visited numerous times in the past. Therefore, in this travel blog I have put down my recollections of all those trips to this vibrant and exciting metropolis. My first trip to Manila was way back in 1981, when I visited a friend I knew from my Burma days. At that time he was assigned to the Burmese Embassy in Manila. I flew from Hongkong to Manila by Philippine Airlines (the first of my many future flights with this airline). When I arrived in Manila, I was quite surprised to see my buddy waiting on the tarmac of the airport, near where the plane landed. When I asked him how he managed to be there, he pointed to the ID card ... read more

Hier is mijn eerste blogentry: Donderdagochtend 8 uur. Mijn ouders brachten me naar Schiphol. Ik ben trouwens 6 uur vooruit ... read more

One Jeepney a 3 hour wait and one bus took us back into the city of Manila from Taal. We spent the jeep journey sat next to a local named grace her husband and one month old baby Jacob. They were kind enough to wake us to the coach station which looks like every other road in Tanaue however we still waited on that hot bit of road for 3 hours before even a sign of a coach going the right direction came along. When we finally reached Manila we headed straight to another " coach station " in the hopes of ending up in Benaue famous for its rice terraces. We broke the journey in two and spent a couple of days in Bougio to wash some clothes and watch plenty of karaoke. Also finally ... read more

I made it. I'm back in the Philippines. If anyone's been following my blog, they'd know what a frustrating ordeal it was being stuck in Australia. But I'm back, feeling thoroughly healthy, and even hungrier than before. All tests have come back negative and I don't have the slightest of symptoms. It was a big and even arduous decision as to where to spend the final 2 months of my trip. I pored over and did an exhaustive comparison of Asia vs Europe. I eventually resolved to leave one week, and stayed up until 4am weighing up the options. As you can see in my earlier blogs, the plan the whole time was to eventually get to Iceland. So leaving that out of the itinerary would be a significant change. I eventually chose the Philippines for ... read more

That old saying if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything is dancing around my mind as I write this. Quartermaines blog that went viral and suffered a vitriolic attack from outraged Filipinos has been one of the reasons I have struggled with do I write this blog or don't I? This is a rant at Manila, not the Phillipines as a nation or Filipino people. Why do i even write travel blogs? So when I go senile my great grandchildren can read me them and I can say...oh? really? I was in a Cambodian brothel? how sweet pass Gran a lolly. So here goes. Manila, when I arrived it was 4.20am and I was on the first bus to the Batangas at 5am. So I saw you fly past out of a bus ... read more

We arrived back in Manila early in the afternoon after a short bus ride from Tagaytay. We decided that this time we'd be staying in a hostel in Makati instead of where we were in Malate at the beginning of our trip. Malate was an interesting neighbourhood, if not a little sketchy at night, but we were trying to meet with the Filipinos we'd met in Zambales and San Juan so we thought Makati might be a little more convenient for them. And Makati is more upscale than Malate, for sure. It's cleaner, and has more condos and malls, and things like that. So it's a bit more sterile too, but there is a red light district a short walk form the hostel, so not by much. There wasn't really much we planned to do this ... read more

We headed off for a short family sojourn in the Philippines before the start of the academic year. Issy and I had honeymooned there way back in 1989 and hadn't been back since. We relied on our ever reliable travel agent, Family Affair Travel, to make all the arrangements. We hoped they'd done a better job than Thomas Cook, who'd arranged the honeymoon. When us newlyweds went to check in at the Manila hotel they'd booked for us it seems they'd decided in their infinite wisdom that we should be in separate rooms. Each to his own I suppose, but this wasn't quite the sort of honeymoon I'd been looking forward to. I think I remember reading about the collapse of Thomas Cook about a year ago. If they were relying on honeymooners for a lot ... read more

Nikos Kazantzakis, one of my favourite authors, wrote what he called an “intellectual autobiography” – it was the tracing of his intellectual thought through the telling of his life story. This is the first blog I’ll write in that vein, which is less about the travel I’m doing and more about my personal and spiritual development. As I’ve explained before, I came to the Philippines originally for humanitarian work. It didn’t turn out that way, so I arranged to check in with my dad’s friends who run a Christian based NGO out of Baseco. It was very eye-opening and my trip has been very positive, but one downside is that I spent two weeks in Manila dividing my time between essentially partying and holidaying, and visiting Baseco doing church work. Here’s what I learned: a slave ... read more
