To leave Hong Kong, we ended up taking the metro to the airport instead of the bus. It was more expensive, but it was fast, and we were running a bit short on time so we didn't want to gamble on running into any unexpected traffic on the road. The Hong Kong airport is really nice. Very modern, open, and bright. It's also pretty huge. After checking in for our flight, we grabbed breakfast and coffee, and then waited by the gate with a large crowd of Filipino's returning home before the holidays. A huge line started to form at the gate as our plane was about to board, and we noticed something different from all the other pre-boarding lines we'd ever been in at airports... People were actually happy. People were talking to each other, ... read more

I’ve been in Manila a few days now. I planned to write a blog each day I was here, and, well, how about I make that a New Year’s Resolution? Because I’ve clearly been failing. Moving on though! To sum up my first few days here, I’d say that I’ve just been going with the flow, tagging along with people wherever I can – and there’s no shortage of people to tag along with, maybe that’s in part due to Filipino hospitality and me also just being lucky. Karaoke: check. Late night bars drinking multiple nights in a row: check. Various Filipino cuisines, most of which I’m trying for the first time: check. You’d be hard pressed believing that I actually came here for humanitarian purposes. I guess this was the holiday portion of my trip. ... read more

Ok so I pull in to Manila after a somewhat cramped Tiger Airways flight (the previous blog was written with the laptop screen at 45 degrees and only semi visible). It’s 9pm and unlike Singapore, as soon as I step outside of the airport I can tell that this place is different. I’m not sure if the term 3rd world is appropriate for Manila's Ninoy Aquino airport, but for the Philippines in general it is, and you get a sniff of it when you step outside and see the non-branded food stalls and cab hustlers. Now I should say the purpose of the Philippines leg of my trip was singular: to help with Typhoon Yolanda (known abroad as Haiyan) victims by doing relief work. A few complications means that nothing however is organised on this front, ... read more

I've been in Manila now for a while and have decided put a few thoughts down about this city. I quite enjoyed being here at first, especially when in the Makati area. That is the main business district, so things tend to be a bit nicer. My favourite part of Makati is Greenbelt and the malls next to it. Greenbelt itself is a row of restaurants and shops around a very nice tropical garden. It is somewhat of an oasis away from the concrete jungle outside. Next to it there are more malls including Landmark, Glorietta and SM Mall. It is a very handy place to shop or just go for a bite to eat. Recently we have been staying in Mandaluyong which is the next town over. Actually it is its own city but the ... read more

Out of My Comfort Zone This had been a very exciting year, and this was my 4th trip of the year. I did not expect this one to be one of my most adventurous trip I had ever embarked on. There are so many first: missing luggage stuck at the airport hunting for hostel and hotel on my own sleeping alone totally unplanned travel trip clueless about the place and how to get there going up to people and strike a conversation totally uncontactable going to a place where everyone told me not to go Nevertheless, it had been one of my most awesome get-aways in years. Manila The moment I touched down at Manila International Airport, it wasn't the most pleasant part of my trip. We had been informed that our luggages were not on ... read more

A travel adventure to the Philippines is never complete without jumping on one of their traditional public transport vehicles – theJeepney. The price of each Jeepney ride differs depending on your origin and destination, but for most basic connections it is a mere 8 Filipino peso. Unlike other modes of public transportation, the payment system is quite unique for first timers. Here are the steps you should follow in order to pay for a Jeepney ride in the Philippines. 1- Step onto the back of the Jeepney and choose a space on the long bench seat to sit on. Shout the name of your destination to the driver to confirm. The route is also usually painted on the side of the jeep. The final destination is displayed on the windshield. 2- As the Jeepney carries on ... read more

As Maya has been assigned a 1 month NGO project true the company in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, in September & October 2012, did we decided to do a bit of backpacking after her assignment. So we had finally 3 weeks to enjoy as much as possible of the Philippines. We eventually opted for Banaue and Palawan, simply to not overload ourselves. Part 1 : Manila : Manila is the capital city and the second largest city of the Philippines. It is one of the sixteen cities (along with the municipality of Pateros) that make up the National Capital Region called Metro Manila which has a population of 12 million. The City of Manila is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay and is bordered by the cities of Navotas and Caloocan to the north; ... read more

Jose P. Rizal may sound like a South American rapper, but the Filipino Doctor-Poet has a park dedicated to him in the centre of the Philippines' capital, Manila, and has a garden to commemorate his execution. I knew very little (read: nothing) of the history of the Philippines. A collection of islands that were united and subjugated by the Spanish in 1565, and named after their reigning monarch, Phillip II. Jose P Rizal comes in at the end of the Colonial Philippines. He was born in Calamba, Laguna (some thirty miles south of Manila), to a wealthy family. His ancestors were a mix of Filipino, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese, the most notable of whom were Chinese merchants and entrepreneurs. At an early age, Rizal and his brother were already annoying the aurthorities with their political ideas ... read more

SCUBA DIVING IN SOUTHEAST ASIA The Joke “I have a friend who is looking for a dive buddy for a six to nine month dive trip in S.E. Asia…I thought of you and Skip.” There was an email address at the end of this cryptic message, with a name I didn’t recognize. The email was signed by a member of my dive club whom I had not heard from for years. My first thought was, “Who has the money to go off diving for six to nine months? I sure don’t.” Then I thought, “I wonder what Skip thinks of this message just popping up on his screen, out of the blue?” I went on clearing my in-box, checking for anything that needed a response. When I turned off the computer, as I waited for it ... read more

OK, ... read more
