I can't see why the Lonely Planet says Cebu City is nicer than Manila. Arriving on a rainy Saturday afternoon, I found it dull and depressing. I walked from the pier to town, not stopping and staying alert. A woman sleeping on the sidewalk with a child lifted her head and looked me over as I crossed the street. She gave up, relaxing onto her makeshift pillow and cardboard carton mat. People stare, you look different, you have money, teenage boys taunting, "Hey, Joe”. I found a place to stay just as the afternoon rain set in. I researched my next destination on the internet and in the evening I spent a boring half hour in a noisy, empty karaoke bar with a litre of Red Horse strong beer. Returning to the pension house, there was ... read more

A szkoda!. ... read more

Wir aßen ... read more

Cebu City: August 23rd - September 7th 2008 Street Life..... There is just something so comforting and homely about watching the world go by in Cebu. It always brings it back to me how much I miss this place when I see the daily life unfolding around me. In saying that - there are some sights that I had never seen before. Sights that are just so typical of a third world country. Sights that you shouldn’t have to see but are part of reality in the part of the world. Life in Cebu seems so busy. Even at 10pm at night, the streets are filled with people - The department stores are still open and lit up. The streets are filled with small ’tindahans’ (small side shops), some supported by a mix of cardboard, corrugated ... read more

I arrived in Cebu yesterday and spent the rest of the day with my family. It was good to be back after years of being away and gave me the chance to see how much the city had changed in the time that I had been gone. The following day we took a road trip today to the town of Carcar, approximately 40kms south of Cebu City (or roughly a 1 hour trip on along Cebu's one and only freeway), which is for it's Spanish heritage homes built during the late 1800's to early 1900's in an effort to get some culture. The houses are built out of wood and have elaborate wooden carvings and expansive windows and were originally painted in different colours. Unfortunately, today most of these houses are almost derelict or in significant ... read more

Erst einmal schlafen. Dann Internet, Essen und ... read more

I like to venture into wet markets to photograph all the exotic foods I see. I live in in Cebu City, Philippines, but I never get tired of going to the market and seeing what new foods I can find. Just when I think I have seen everything, I find new images to take. I love to see food in its raw form and everything is so fresh. The fruits, vegetable, meats and seafood. I also enjoy walking around the markets because of the people I see there. It is a common place for people to gather and makes a great place to photograph faces and people doing ordinary life activities. Everything in the market environment makes for great photography. I am fortunate enough to live only 30 minutes from a good size wet market in ... read more

After 2 nights at Alona beach on Pangloa Island (where we enjoyed the fresh seafood restaurants along the beach front, the bars, a massage from an old lady that was quite clearly senile and the company of a transsexual called Fiona - see pic on previous blog) we headed back to Cebu city for a couple of nights. Cebu and the Pacific Pensionne guest house has very much become our base here in the Visaya's - we've called in 3 or 4 times in between islands. Cebu city itself is the 2nd largest in the Philippines after Manila and Cebu island the 9th largest at 300km long and 40km wide. The Rough Guide doesn't rate the city too highly attributing phrases such as 'urban nightmare', 'full of 'clutter, exhaust fumes and nondescript concrete malls' to it. ... read more

After leaving Boracay Island, I decided that I would visit Cebu next, and hopefully, hop in to a ferry and go to Bohol to see its famous Chocolate Hills. Going to Cebu from Boracay took a lot of courage and patience. It was a long and tiring journey. At Caticlan port, where a motorized boat from Boracay dropped me off together with the otherBoracay tourists, I was advised by a bus driver of an Iloilo-bound bus that the only way to get to Cebu was by way of Iloilo Iloilo city. From there,I would have to ride in a passenger ship that sails to to Cebu everyday. So I took a bus at the bus terminal in Caticlan,Aklan with Iloilo as my destination. The trip was a mixed bag of smooth and bumpy rides. There were portions ... read more

It does not take long at all to get used to the gentle pace of life at Peter's Dive Resort, and to forget the cares and woes of home. Which makes it all the more difficult to accept we have to leave. It's been a great privilege to dive Sogod Bay's stunning reefs, gliding past its precipitous walls alive with the most extraordinary biodiversity we've ever seen. The timing of our return to Hong Kong is a little less bizarre than the outwards trip, and we leave Padre Burgos at a respectable hour of the morning. Given that Ormoc is over three hours' drive away, we opt for a slightly slower sailing from the port of Bato, which is only an hour or so up the west coast of Leyte from Padre Burgos. Before you get ... read more
