We left Manila for Baguio at 2pm and arrived at around 6-7pm on the 2nd of June. I went there with my bro & cousins, for 2 days and 2 nights. We stayed at my bro's gf's family's guesthouse & we didn't have to pay a single peso. We felt bad, we wanted to pay them but they insisted we stay for free. They even prepared all meals for us! Such nice people, I swear. I've always dreamt about going to Baguio when I was kid, I've always heard about it in class and it's a shame that I didn't get to see it back then. From my cousins' comments, the Bagiuo charm is fading away. A city that used to be covered in pine trees is now suffering from industrialization. There seems to be more ... read more

February 17th We awoke with a start at 4am, confused and excited. We loaded our daypacks into the van and promptly fell back asleep as Bobby drove through the early morning traffic. Some hours later, when the sun decided to join us, we stopped for some breakfast in a fast food complex in the country. It was a true concrete jungle - as though the wildest forest had gone to bed with an urban planner. We all ate won ton soup and blinked rapidly at each other in the day’s new brilliance. By one o’clock we were climbing the stairs to Mt. Data, the name of our many-bedded room at the top of the building. Mt. Data again had the strange combination of amenities we now know the Philippines is marked by - cable TV, comfortable ... read more

My christmas was spent with family in Gatchalian and as always was brilliant. I often found myself standing back from the crowd reflecting and just taking stock of how special it felt to be with my family. It's a shame it doesn't happen more often. 26th - 29th Dec was spent in Baguio (usually about a 6 hour drive from Manila), but I swear the whole of Manila was there. The traffic was horrendous! It was also pretty damn cold, which I mistakenly thought I could handle being from London and all, but hell no! I was bloody freezing! Nevertheless, I loved it there. The views were breathtaking and of course the company was always great. We stayed in a hotel in Mines View, which has a pretty spectacular view point. I visited mines view quite ... read more

The craziest thing is that, as I get ready to go home, the time you would think would be the most exciting and least stressful, I seem to have stress coming out the wazoo. At the beginning of November, as the countdown really started, I felt great. The knowledge that I would be back in Canada in a ridiculously short amount of time was making me feel almost euphoric. All of the lonliness and all of the struggles with culture shock seemed to disappear and I felt 100% content and happy. None of the things that bug me about Filipino culture, about Baguio City, about my life, seemed to exist anymore. I guess that was the weightless feeling you get before a big fall. That lasted for a wonderous couple of weeks, and then, without warning ... read more

Yesterday, because no one else was available, I was asked to present the Cordillera human rights situationer to a couple of Norwegen interns. The presentation for the Norwegens went really well. Turns out I know what I am talking about. But since I have never really hosted the interns before I wasn't sure what else to do with them. Since we were finished the presentation by mid-afternoon, I decided to take the girls for a walk around Burnham lake, one of my favorit spots because of it's campy swan paddle baots, and then for iced tea in Vocas, a hippie restaurant with awesome atmosphere. The conversation was initially about human rights and the situation in the region, a continuation of the presentation I had given them in the office. But as iced tea stretched into the ... read more

Those of you who are uncomfortable with stories about mentration, stop reading this blog right now! However, for the sake of writing down some of the funny things that happen to me to balance all of the really emotional entries, I am going to write this anyway. For multiply reasons I decided before I came not to have my period at all while I was in the Philippines. Now this has been a very interesting 11 month experiement. In the initial months it lead to me having low grade pms every 3 weeks. Combine that with the emotional rollercoaster that I was feeling in the first few months of my internship, and there were times that I am sure my host probably thought I was at best weird, and at most nuts. However, my body quickly ... read more

Salidummay, a band attached to the cultural group launched their new CD tonight. The launching was a wonderfu success, with a big crowd and plentiful cheering. I had a great time, as I always do at these kinds of events, mingling and chating with friends and coworkers I don't see that often, and playing around with my friends from the cultural group. It has hit me recently just how important these gatherings are to activists working in such a stressful atmosphere. I used to love the get togethers, solidarity nights and celebrations because I am a social butterful with a nose for a good party. I love nothing more to be "out", floating on the energy of a crowd, seeing just what interesting and new things I can see and do. But recently, as the work ... read more

Today, November 17, marks the second month since James' abduction. We held a whole day of activities for the occaison. In the morning we traveled by caravan to different public places in La Trinidad, the capital city of the Procvince of Benguet, to hold programs. Our intention was to inform more people about James's work as an indigenous rights activist and his continued disappearance. In the afternoon we held a long program in the centre of Baguio City for the same reasons. The pubic market in La Trinidad was the last stop for our program in the capital city. It was an important stop for the program, because it is the trading post for all of the vegetables in the province and is always very full of farmers and transporters, middle men, vendors and shoppers. We ... read more

NORTH TO THE CORDILLERA OCT 12 to 19, 2008 Although it was hard for Al to leave the warm water and snorkelling, we did head north to the Cordillera and the Luzon area of The Philippines. What magnificent beauty! We flew from Puerto Princesa to Manila on Oct. 12th and immediately took a taxi to the bus depot to check out buses to Baguio and there was one leaving in a half hour so off we went, heading north. It was a winding 7 hour trip through the mountains; felt a bit like our BC mountains. The lights of Baguio appeared about 8 pm and off we went to our hotel. We chose The Burnham Hotel from the Lonely Planet, as it was listed as having lots of character. It did have character but also musty ... read more

Well we found the beach. Turns out it was a 5 minute drive up the road. At the stop we were supose to get off at the previous evening. We stayed at a place called Sebay beach resort right on the ocean. The beach, called La Union is a very popular surfers destination. We got there and the waves were really small so we wanted to wait for bigger. All the local children were surfing and had a little competition. It was so cute. The town is called San Juan and isn't a huge tourist desitnation, we are constantly stared at. Our first night we met some people from Manila, but we were so tired we headed to bed at 830. There was a huge storm with thunder and lightening. The next day we spent at ... read more
