So it's been awhile since we've published anything. We're definitely getting into a routine here. It's feeling a lot more like home and normal day-to-day life, rather than a new experience in a foreign country. School is still amazing. I think in the last blog I mentioned that I was going to be teaching another IB class. The admin decided that it would be a better idea to make it a combined and co-taught class so the other teacher could still work on teaching IB, but get some feedback from me and then also watch me teach it as well. It's going pretty well right now because the two classes are the in the same spot (the curriculums are very similar, however my HL (higher level) class goes a little more in depth and covers more ... read more

Well we had plans for the weekend, but because of the typhoon, we're stuck in Baguio. This was a long weekend, so we were planning on going to Subic Bay and going to Zoobic Safari (you can pet tigers!) and Ocean Adventure (kinda like Sea World). So on Friday night, before it starting raining too bad, we went to the bus station to see what times the buses went to Olongapo (right near Subic). You can't rely on the schedules online, or even by calling, because a lot of the times it's not correct. So we went there and they said that they busses were at 5:45am and 8:45am, and we should get there 2 hours early. So we decided on the later one. We got back to campus and it started to rain pretty badly, ... read more

School is amazing :) I love my job! I just can't describe how awesome it is to teach a subject that you're passionate about to great kids. And somehow I lucked out and got all the honors/higher level classes, so most of my kids actually like math too, in addition to being very motivated. All of my classes have been going really well. I've actually been able to do some fun activities and games because the kids will actually work on what I ask them to do. Such a change from last year. However, one of my students in 12th grade IB (the one who won the math competition... it wasn't 13th place... it was first place... I misread the sign. It said the 13th annual math olympiad. And he placed first, nationwide.) is probably way ... read more

We survived the first week of school! To sum it up, it's amazing! :) Here's a rundown of the last few days: Wednesday was the open house and classroom prep day. I am the 10th grade homeroom teacher, so most of my 10th graders stopped by to get their schedules and their lockers. They were all super polite, calling me ma'am and doing a slight bow when they addressed me. That's taking a little bit to get used to. They all came without parents, which I thought was interesting. Most of the students are Korean and only a few live on campus here. Most live in Korean academies in Baguio that are run by Koreans (most of the time parents of one of the students), but a few do live with their parents here in town. ... read more

Again, it's been a busy past few days. I'll start where I left off... Friday was just another day of orientation. There was some time to do classroom preparations, so that was nice. I think I'm going to be a little overwhelmed with the IB curriculum, but the good thing is, I only have six IB students between the two classes :) I haven't really thought too much about the other classes that I'm teaching (8th, 9th, and 10th grade regular math), but they shouldn't be too bad because it's the regular American curriculum (Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2). One benefit of this school though is that we only meet with each class every other day. So even though I have 5 different preparations, I only have two or three classes each day (they are 75 ... read more

Well the last week has been pretty crazy. Here's a rundown of what we've been up to since we left last Saturday: Friday: I got back to MSP about 11pm from my IB training in New Mexico, so Brandon (and his family) met me in the cities and we stayed there so we would be close to the airport for our flight to Manila on Saturday. Saturday: Our flight wasn't until about 5pm, so we had some time during the day to hang out with our families and say good-bye before embarking on our 35 hour journey to Manila. My parents still were taking care of Camo (thanks!!), so they came down to the cities to bring him to us and meet us for lunch. We struggled for a while to find a place that we ... read more

Having missed Banaue and Sagada, I did the next best thing. Go up to Baguio City, the Summer Capital of the Philippines. Temperature here was so pleasant between 16 to 24 Celsius. What a respite from the sweltering heat in Metro Manila where we live and suffer 36 Celsius temps. With the NLEX and new SCTex highway, the journey was shortened considerably that we made it to Baguio well before lunchtime. Just a 5 hour car ride over good roads and via Marcos Highway on the uphill climb. On our downhill drive towards Metro Manila, we chose the more famous Kennon Road. In years past, we have visited the usual touristy sites in Baguio City. The "routine" calls for visits to the Cathedral, Mines View Park, Wright Park, Mansion House, Burnham Park, Camp John Hay and ... read more

I've been to Baguio City a countless times already, but this is the first time that I went there with my daughter so it's extra special to me. We went to the City of Pines last Holy Week 2011(Apr.20-23, 2011). I went together with my sister and her kids and of course the nannies. The following morning my mother and my cousin followed us. We were able to stay courtesy of our companion's uncle who were residing inside a camp in Baguio. So we really saved a lot on our accomodations since during Holy Week it was expected that rooms, hotels and even transient homes's rates shoots up a lot! Before we went up at Baguo, I was the one in charged to prepare our itinerary so I included the usual tourist spots on our must go ... read more

Thursday March 31, 2011 We had breakfast of a pastry that was a carmel, leche (milk) topping - and of course pineapple juice - we then walked over to Carpios. We all got in the Nissan truck and went to Minesview park ( where there used to be gold mined) We went up to the top of the mountain - took pictures of the mountains - then dressed in native costume and took pictures - then we shopped for souveniors - ate corn on the cob that was boiled and on a stick. We went to another part of the park and treated Gladys and Jackie to a horse ride. Gladys loves to take the horse ride! We passed out tracts in the park -then we went back to the Carpios and had grilled pork chop, ... read more

Tuesday I did not sleep well at all - basically was awake - very glad that we decided that I would sleep on the the floor mattress in the living area and Jackie in the bedroom area so that I could not disturb her and I did alot of blog work and skyping Steph and Rachael. Amazing that you can call around the world - not worry about cost and even see them! The night cemented the desire to come back to the house near the Carpios - because I knew that Steve was probably awake but we could not have any way to know. The facility at Doan Rest was very nice - the flowers beautiful - there are play areas with volleyball, basketball - a recreation building - a treehouse (we took pictures as ... read more
