Well, we’re winding down the school year here. My IB seniors have taken all three of their math tests (they have 2-3 IB tests per subject, and they have 6 subjects, so the month of May is pretty much all tests for them). They said that they thought they did pretty well, so we’ll see when we get their scores in July! It’s been really crazy lately because of all of the end of the year stuff, and I’ve been sick a few times… First, being sick in the Philippines… Mid-April I had a really bad cold, nothing too major, but just a horrible cold, so I had to miss a couple days of school. I got over that within a few days (just lots of sleep and water), and then like four days later, I ... read more

I am traveling with 23 students, tickets were purchased last April 2012. Our ticket confirmation clearly states the 15kgs baggage allowance - thats 360kgs total for us 24 passengers. There were no problems going to Cebu, going back with flight at 4:10am, while doing the group check-in, the crew was telling me, we have an excess baggage of 100kgs. Traveling on a limited budget, my students made sure they do not exceed the allowable 15kgs, we even weighed in before proceeding to the counter for check-in. I said to the crew, that's impossible, the crew said, "please pay P15,000 for the excess baggage, thats 100kgs X P150 so you will be allowed to board the plane" I said, "may I talk to a supervisor or manager?" The supervisor came, "Sir you already have 240kgs of total ... read more

I’ve been known by many people in the Philippines and even in other countries as “Happy Loner Traveller”, a person who explores and documents on his own all the “off-the-beaten track” Philippine destinations in order to promote it to the whole wide World!!! But not all of the time I travel alone… Whenever I come back to a particular place, I’ll make sure that my friends should also see what I have admired in that specific destination. So I always organize the most affordable and quality vacation that all of us would enjoy. In the past 4 years, I have organized 5 vacations for my true friends! Whenever I organize trips for my friends and after witnessing their faces getting amazed on all the places that I bring them to, there’s that feeling within me, a ... read more

It has been a really long time since I’ve written. Sorry. So I’ll give some updates on some of the highlights of the last couple months. The first weekend after we were back from Japan, Marissa and went to the beach again. Pretty much the same as it was when we went in November. We went to the same place (Sunset Bay in San Fernando) and just laid on the beach and read and got a little sun. However, this time, it was much more complicated getting a bus back to Baguio. We took a trike into the bus stop in San Fernando and waited for about an hour, and then a bus that was going to Baguio finally (again, no schedule, the busses just kinda drive by randomly). But, we didn’t realize that we had ... read more

It’s the usual Saturday morning in Baguio City and the streets are filled with cars and hawkers. The first of the sun’s golden rays have appeared, giving a golden cast to Burnham Park – filled with people as it is today – and the streamers everywhere constantly remind tourists that the next two days the city will be filled with merrymakers and the worst you can do is to come without lots of patience and a sense of fun. Because it will be pushing, shoving, and getting stuck in traffic for hours. The city is glued to the thoroughfares around Burnham Park for the Panagbenga Festival. The festival takes place in the whole month of February but culminates in the last weekend of the month with a parade of flower-adorned floats that cruise through Session Road, ... read more

We're on Christmas break now, for three weeks! I love being a teacher! This first week, we're just hanging out in Baguio. Finishing up our final grades, cleaning, and getting ready for our trip. It's been kinda nice just hanging out with not much to do, but I'm getting a little bored, so I'm glad we're leaving in a few days. Yesterday, I finished all my grades, which was really nice to get done before we leave, even though they're not due until we go back for second semester. Out of my 35 kids (yes, in five classes, I only have 35 students total. I love it :) ) I only have one C, 6 B's and the rest are A's :) I love my job! I don't think Brandon's are quite so good because he ... read more

When we go to Tibet we are probably now prepared to climb Mount Everest. With all the trekking, hill climbing, and stairs we’ve climbed in the past week and half we feel we can conquer anything. Not without Kristin complaining the whole way of course. We are now in a place called Baguio. Baguio is the Philippines summer capital. It is a really pretty city with mountain temperatures. To start our day off we headed to Camp John Hay. This area was founded as a hill station for the US military in the early 1900’s. Now it’s a tourist destination with shops, food joints, a historical core, adventure parks etc. We grabbed a bite to eat at a place called Brother’s Burger. I gave Tris a lecture on not letting his eyes be bigger than his ... read more

I know it's been awhile since the last post, but we've pretty much just been going to school and coming home. It's really starting to feel like home. Not a lot new has happened in the last few weeks. School has been pretty much the same. My kids are still amazing and doing incredibly well. The new standard level IB class that I just started teaching a few weeks ago is going pretty well. It's a lot harder to teach than the higher level, because the kids aren't quite as smart. But they're still way above average. It's going well so far and the students are doing well. I just can't go nearly as quickly with the material as I can in the higher level class. But it's more of what it will be like when ... read more

Most of the people think that what I am referring to as an “Extraordinary Life” is a life lived luxuriously, eating pleasurable foods and travelling lavishly in many parts of the Philippines. But they are all wrong… Because what I mean by an “Extraordinary Life” is deeper than what many people think, it is filled with more purpose and meaning, it is a life lived significantly with the discovery of true inner joy and faith formed within oneself… All people has this but only few realize that they have this gift given by our God to influence and change all the people in the world to have a better view about their lives and the world as how they see it… So now, I can finally say that Armie “Happy Loner Traveller” Yuson, a simple ... read more
