It has been a normal couple of weeks for me here. The second Fact Finding Mission we had planned to lead into the area affected by the militarization in March was literally rained out, postponed due to a typhoon that hit the region. That unfortunately also means that my attempt to celebrate a Canadian-esk Victoria Day long weekend was also preempted due to rain. A typhoon it turns out, is sort of like a blizzard of rain, the rains comes down hard for a few days strait, flooding the streets, blowing up, down and sideways, causing power outages and making travel dangerous. Even the beautiful, big-top circus, canopy roof of the city's biggest mall was soaked through, causing the patrons, all driven from their homes by boredom, to open their umbrellas inside. Trudging through the mall ... read more

While staying in Baguio for a certain length of time, I observed that not all areas of the city received continuous supply of water. In some places, there is always a problem with the water supply. In the place where I temporarily stayed, water came in trickles from its faucets. The owner of the place was a little apologetic to me for this inconvenience. Most hotels and inns in the city sometimes advertise to new arrivals to this popular summer destination that water is not a problem in their establishment. Indeed, water is a precious commodity in this city whose population increases by leaps and bounds, especially during the summer months. During the late months of the year, the city also experiences an increase of visitors from the lowlands. While water is a problem, there are ... read more

I read a lot of Canadian news still. I do this partially because I am still a political junky and can't help myself from tuning in to hilarious gong show that has become Canadian politics. But also because my work with activists in the Philippines is showing me how interconnected everything really is. So I continue to pay attention to what is happening on Parliament Hill because I have come to see how a country's national policy effects their actions internationally and thus the ability of the international community to act on human rights concerns. (ie: Canada's unwillingness to sign the Universal Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples because they are unwilling to talk about the dire situation of most First Nations within our boarders.) I was upset to read this week that the Liberals ... read more

Despite a wonderful, brand new hostel, our time in Manila was tainted by our hassles by a certain Filipino airline that made us buy a ticket we didn't want at the 11th hour. I'll write more about this once the whole issue is resolved. Anyway, our evenings in Manila may have been spent sitting around a nice private terrace at night and having fresh mango brought to us, but our days were mostly logistical migraines. We woke up Thursday morning to leave the terrible city behind and head up north to the famed rice terraces of Banaue. The first leg of the trip would take 8 hours and take us as far as the northern capital, Baguio. By the time we got there it was the evening and our bodies were stiff and our minds completely ... read more

I have something pretty awful to admit to everyone.I have never really been involved... in all of the years I have spent reading about Human Rights and talking about Human Rights I have never actually been involved in the struggle. None of the volunteer work on my resume is over 3 months long. A hundred times life has gotten in the way of volunteerism and I have decided it was alright to get uninvolved again. I have always told myself that it was okay that I wasn't writing letters to politicians, or consistently joining rallies, or sitting on the boards of any safe spaces organizations, or rape crisis centers, because I was focusing instead on my academic human rights education. I told myself that it was more important to be prepared for the struggle when I ... read more

I never knew the President of this country is celebrating her 61st birthday on April 5 in Lubao Pampanga, which I believe is her birthplace. So she's Aries, her birth sign. It so happens that I was also born under the Aries sign, having been born on April 9. As far as I'm concerned, an Aries person is a very sensitive fellow, but sensitive to the extent that he or she will do anything to correct in a positive way the offshoot of this extreme awareness to outside forces affecting him/her. In short, he/she is inventive and will find a way to solve a problem and provide a solution for the good of the greater number. And this person born on this sign will not rest on momentary accomplishments. He/she will continue to find solutions to ... read more

I sent this letter today to the Premier on Ontario and to the province's Minister of Aboriginal Affairs after receiving an article about the arrests from a co-worker here. I am absolutely disgusted to see something happening in Canada that I see happening here under a dictatorship. I wanted to share the letter with everyone else. Hon. Dalton McGuinty Premier Legislative Building Queen's Park Toronto, ON M7A 1A1 Hon. Michael Bryant Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs 1407 - 99 Wellesley St W Toronto ON M7A 1W3 Dear Hon. I have spent most of my last two weeks at work doing documentation. Documentation is the term used to describe the paper work involved in protecting human rights. This paper work can include everything from fact sheets, affidavits, complaint forms for the various government institutions, complaint forms for international institutions, and press releases, statements and urgent reports. This week I worked on the first three. On the 18th of March a group of about 30 student activists held a lightening rally in front of the President's summer Mansion in Baguio City. The President was in town for the Armed Forces of the Philippines Academy graduation. The protesters where met by about 100 police officers with shields and trenchons who had amassed to stop anyone who had the guts to protest while GMA was in the region. ... read more

Somewhere in the process of settling into Baguio, going on vacation and making friends with my colleagues I forgot I was here doing human rights work. I chose to make human rights my career because it gets in your blood - from the first day I sat in a human rights class I felt connected to the people I was learning about, and since then, everytime I start to get distracted human rights issues jumps right back into my life to remind me of what I am suppose to be focusing on. And that point was brought back to me last week, when I visited the Migrante Metro-Baguio office. Migrante is an international NGO that advocates the rights of migrant workers. Migrante Metro-Baguio focuses their work on the numerous overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that leave this ... read more

Indeed Baguio is the summer capital of the Philippines. Right now, as the entire Philippine archipelago broils in the summer heat, Baguio residents enjoy a temperate weather, more on the cool side. This is one simple explanation why at this time of the year, the city teemed with people and tourists and visitors coming from every town and province and city of the Philippines. Add to it the continuing arrival of foreign tourists and the city is now crowded with people trying to escape from the summer heat and spending their short but valuable time here looking for tourist spots to view and enjoy. At any time there at the long stretch of Session Road, you see hundreds if not thousands of people walking along its narrow sidewalks coming and going from just about everywhere. This ... read more
