Hiking was fun for a day and a half, climbing in the wet heat by the river and waterfalls. Then I met my two companions for the most of the rest of the trek - Tim from Melbourne and Jules from Oxford. Jules had left the British Army as a Captain 6 months ago and Tim was traveling after quitting his job. As soon as we met we continued together, Tim is a very good cards player who taught me some variants on 500. We heading up into Manang which was very Tibetan and nice and found some great places to stay while talking lots on the trek.... read more

I got the bus to Besisahara on Oct 2nd with a young American couple from Kansas City, MO and that took about 5 hours. We got to the first checkpoint and they didn't have a permit. It would have been double for them to buy there ($50 each) so they headed back to Pokhara and I headed on to the path to Bhulbhule. I pretty soon bumped into two Isrealis and we continued together. They informed me that Bhulbhule means "dick" in Hebrew and that must have been why they found it so funny to ask locals the way. We stayed at the same place the first night, and I left a little earlier than them the next day. ... read more

The bus to Pokhara was painful - initially I sat in the front with the driver as it was quite full, and a local woman was worried that my pack was going to squash her chickens. Later on the driver saved me a space at the back. I bumped my head on the bus quite a few times and settled in with my knees tight against the seat in front. The buses look the same as in India but they are a lot smaller. It took 7 hours to go 85km which seemed a little unnecessary... but I got to Pokhara and found a nice place to stay lakeside and relaxed for a few days. After relaxing by the lake with some Chileans, and some English. Visiting another Japanese Peach Pagoda ( there is one in ... read more

I took the night bus from Varenasi to the Nepalese border at Sunauli the next day after a relaxing day at the guest house overlooking the ganges - enough entertainment for anyone. I got on the bus at 6:30pm and it took a while to get the engine ready for the bus to move. I was very worried for the first two hours that the 10 hour bus ride was going to be a nightmare because it was so crowded that I couldn't move and my bag was in everyone's way, but they didn't let me put it on the roof... but then after a couple of hours everyone got off - so I locked my bag to the bench to the left of the driver and the engine (they do drive on the left in ... read more

Finally, after 16 months and 14 days on the road since setting off to sunny Rio de Janeiro, I am back home in Manchester and, yes, its raining! Our final few weeks travelling in Nepal and India were pretty eventful. I last wrote from Kathmandu where I was still sick from the dodgy Indian restaurants (what do they expect when there are goats roaming around in the kitchen?!). From Kathmandu we took an 8 hour bus ride to Chitwan National Park. On the way we saw three separate road accidents - very unnerving! Chitwan itself was wonderful. When we arrived, there were absolutely no other foreign tourists so we were practically dragged into all the hotels and ended up with yet another great deal - a gorgeous room for only $1.50. The thing to do in ... read more

Namaste everyone, This update is going to have to be short. My plane leaves in less than two hours and I still have some last minute shopping to do. The trek was simply put incredible. Everest and all the Himalayan mountains are huge, beautiful, awe inspiring and truly wonders of the world. My lasting impressions of the Himalayans will be yak bells, pink round faces, rushing rivers and waterfalls, porters 5' tall carrying incredible loads in baskets supported by their forehead, thin air that makes every step a task and the incredible beauty and presence of the mountains that literally are above the clouds. I was only able to upload a few pictures. I will upload the rest when I get to Bangkok. I did something pretty wild yesterday, but will leave the story and the ... read more

Well, the altitude and dehydration caught up with me. I was eating dinner at a restaurant and I knew I was going to pass out. I made eye contact with a guy a few tables away and as he got up, I went down. I woke up to him and two other people trying to make me drink water. I must have been delirious because I told the guy (he's Israeli) that he looked like an angel! They helped me back to my hotel and I spent 3 miserable days with some type of stomach bug and I was weaker than I've ever been in my life. I actually got a little scared for a minute...being alone on the other side of the world when you are sick is not fun! There was a little ... read more

I'm in Pokhara now, which is a 7 hour bus ride from Kathmandu. Remember when I said I had seen the beauty of Nepal? I was wrong...NOW I've seen the beauty! I swear, it just keeps getting better and better. We drove down winding road through the foothills of the Himalayas...amazing. I could see snow covered mountains that were so beautiful. The clouds settled about 1/3 of the way from the tops of them. I didn't once get bored during the entire 7 hours. Again, I was mesmorized. We passed many poor villages. It seems as though it is perfectly acceptable to lie around and do nothing. Quite different from the workaholic place where we are from. Many people were actually doing labor work, but at a very leisurely pace. The driving is interesting. These ... read more

Now I'm really about to babble... Today I went to the offices of Volunteer Nepal. Basically it's a 4 floor home and they rent out the bottom floor. The other girls I met (we met by chance at a restaurant) warned me that I should continue to stay at the hotel (the hotel is only $2.50 a night). I thought I would give the office a shot anyway. I'm glad I went because I really saw some Nepalese culture. The "office" is about 7 miles from the city. I was literally the only non-Nepali person in the area. For some reason, I loved how that felt. There is a family who lives in the office and they insisted that I eat lunch right away. I had to take off my shoes and sit on a ... read more

Talk about sensory overload! I finally arrived to Kathmandu. Seeing as the furthest I've been from the states is Mexico, this is quite a different experience. The mountains are beautiful and the city is organized chaos. The waste management system is pretty much non-existent, so the city isn't the cleanest. It's strange...this place is so far from Western civilization, yet Eminem is blaring in the streets. The children are so beautiful and the women wear saris that are all unique. Old women squat on the side of the street and drink what looks like dirty water out of bowls. I'm staying in a hotel for the first 2 nights while the other volunteers have orientation for teaching English, or at least that's what the person who picked me up at the airport told me. He ... read more
