The plan for today was to see Bhaktapur, an old city about 13kms from Kathmandu. Since we weren't really planning to go trekking, the main things to see in Nepal were temples, so we mentally prepared ourselves to be templed-out for the whole day. Bhaktapur had the most ridiculously expensive entry fee - 750 rupees - which is huge compared to the standard 100 rupees at other places. So we were expecting something fairly extraordinary. What we got was some fairly old buildings and a lot of temples. There was one gross one which had two elephants doing stuff that elephants shouldn't be doing in public. There was also another one with lions. Unfortunately, apart from a lot of photos that looked very much like the temples in the Durbar Square in Kathmandu, we left with ... read more

Our time in India has been great, although a little traumatic. Probably the most enjoyable part was actually experiencing India and seeing all the wonderful, colourful places and people. And most importantly, eating all the food we can at bargain prices. Let's see if our good memories of India outweigh the bad. *Food - for all of you who know us - and that's all of you except for the guy who responded to our blog on Hyderabad defending the beauty of his home city - you will know that food is always at the top of our list. And India has so much food to choose from. You can have chicken curry, fish curry, mutton curry, egg curry, red curry, blue curry and best of all the food poisoning kind of curry. All very tasty ... read more

After 12 days in India, we were ready for a new country. Today it was time for Nepal, and in particular, the capital Kathmandu. We had seen a movie staring Kathmandu airport once before, and it had cows running around the airport, so we were sorely disappointed to find a rather modern looking bland airport awaiting us. The taxi ride to the hotel was interesting, giving a brief glimpse of various parts of Kathmandu. The most notable thing was that it was a lot cleaner than most of India. Considering that it's a much poorer country, this was rather surprising. You could still see signs of poverty around, but there definately weren't as many beggars and rundown hovels, and definately not as many cows standing in the middle of the road mooing at the cars going ... read more

Descending from the lifeless windswept Tibetan plateau into a narrow gorge, trees in a state of vivid autumnal bloom begin to creep up the sheer walls. The further we descend, the browns, oranges and reds become green and greener still. The spaces between fill with a whole array of plant life until the entire gorge is enveloped in the verdant life force that is the subcontinent. Three seasons in reverse - a plunge of over 2kms in little over an hour. Time to take the thermals off and let the heat permeate every pore. Jostling through the border town melee straining to hear the radio held to my ear. Bush wins a second term - this time there is no doubt, the people have spoken. Are they nuts? Did I miss the last four years? Did ... read more

Chitwan National Park is in the far south of Nepal boardering with India. It is a large Jungle area which has been protected in order to maintain its diverse variety of animal and plant life. We chose to spend a couple of days just outside the park and pay for an organised programe of activities. This included visiting the local elephant breeding centre, an elephant ride into the jungle, a canoe trip and elephant bathing! It was a good couple of days, with the highlights being seeing the wild rhinos in the park and going in the lake with the elephants and their trainers to take their daily bath (I got soaked in the process). For our last few days in the country we were kindly invited, along with Marinka and Jasper (our friends from the ... read more

Yesterday we arived back form a week long trek in the Himalayas and we are both shattered! Once we had decided that a trek was a definate must, we hired a local guide, Sauraj. Besides his obvious role of showing us the way, he also kept us entertained with his funny stories and neverending local information. We completed what is known as the 'Jomsom' trek. Flying from Pokhara, where we are currently based, to Jomsom (2713m) and treking the route backwards (apparently the easier option). The first day was an easy three and a half hour trek to Tukuche where we spent the first night in the most fantastic guest house run by a dutchman and his Nepalese wife. The rooms where imaculate and the apple pie to die for! It was there that we met ... read more

When I left you last time I was heading out for a traditional Nepalese dinner. I almost missed it! When Micheal, Jamie and Me had gotten out of our Taxi earlier we'd headed off in our seperate ways and Micheal had specifically said, (though he now denies it), that everyone was meeting up to go at 7.30. (Turns out it was 7)! So there I am ambling back to the hotel, MP3 Player blasting away in my ears when suddenly two taxis swerve to a halt in front of me and I'm confronted by everyone shouting at me to get in. Two streets further down Jamie had an almost identical experience when we fortuitously ran into him also. Our taxi was delayed on route cos of a flat tyre! This is now my 3rd flat tyre, ... read more

Quick note to Claudia... It was Nadine who first started all that me and her as an item thing... so she could stop men from gawping at her, or hawkers trying to sell her stuff. She just kept telling them I was her husband and I wouldn't give her any money, and I would glare at them and frighten them off... so it was good to use the same technique at the Indian Border the other night to my advantage. We arrived in Kathmandu just after sunset last night, It had been a long final wait to get through the security cordon into the city and we all alighted from the bus and walked alongside as we waited with all the other traffic on the mountain pass. (I won the bus pool on just what time ... read more

Ok before I start, just finished dinner and had lots to drink, (so please keep that in mind)! Tuesday Afternoon Joan, Glen, Micheal, Jamie and me headed off in Tuk Tuk's to Saranath, (which is where supposedly Buddah gave his first surmon)! It's a quiet peacefull location, (and a good escape from the furore of Varanasi)! NOTEā€¦The great Buddha enhanced the sanctity of Varanasi by choosing the environs of the city to preach his first sermon at Sarnath, (only 10 kms away) after attaining enlightenment.Later, Ashoka, the great Mauryan Emperor erected magnificent stupas and other buildings alongwith his mighty stone pillar, Dharmarajika Stupa. The 110 ft. tall Damekh Stupa marks the place where Buddha preached first sermon.Sarnath has been a premier centre for Buddhism. It is a rich collection of ancient Buddhist relics and antiques comprising numerous ... read more

Our first glimpse of Nepal was out of the plane window. Like any other flight we were flying over a sea of white clouds, but about 15 minutes before landing the mountains broke though and sat magnificently on the horizon. Our first real sight of the great Himalaya. Kathmandu, although very touristy in Thamel, is a great place. The people are lovely and so much less pushy than in Kolkata, its a whole much more laid back city. By complete chance we ended up in a really nice hotel called Hotel Florid, and for $8 a night we get a very smart, clean room looking over the beautiful garden. Our room also has a HOT shower and a toilet even 'Ma Beaton' would be proud of! Thamel is full of very 'samey' touristy shops selling lots ... read more
