EVEREST..... WOW Because it was there, was the famous speech made by Sir Edmund Hillary when asked why he climbed to the summit of Mount Everest.... our reponse if someone would have asked why we climbed to base camp would have been...because we told people we were going to....that was the only motivation keeping our group going up. The experience started with a short 28 minute flight between two sets of mountain ranges and the plane being a little 16 seater with terrible turbulance and the runway of the airport at about a 30 degree angle and roughly 50 meters long, Scary to say the least. We got off the plane and started our first day a nice relaxing 3 hours walk to where we stayed the first night. This seemed like a piece of cake, ... read more

6:27 pm Kathmandu, Nepal: just arrived back at Linda's after flying in from Lumbini district - 35 minute flight to cover the same ground of 7-1/2 hour bus ride the other day. Very luxurious, but we couldn't take the puppy on the plane, so he had to made the 90 minuted taxi ride back to Parasi to hang out with the cook and staff there until Linda goes back next week. Have a very exciting day yesterday including a trip into no-man's-land between Nepal and India. Lots of bargains - real Indian saree for Nrp400 or about $5.50. Had the saree top made this morning at the tailor before we headed out. Also went to Ramagraham holy site yesterday, thought to be the birthplace of Buddha's mother and one of the 8 burial sites for Buddha's ... read more

Here is the 2nd installment from our travels home to Australia in March/April......enjoy! Thursday 22nd March - To Pokhara There were no buses leaving the India/Nepal border for a few hours so we hired a taxi for 1800 Nepalese Rupees ($38 AU) to take us to Pokhara. This was an interesting drive to say the least. Respective parents should skip to the next paragraph! It was a butt clenching 5hr drive, twisting and turning through the narrow roads of Nepal as we dodged children, trucks and animals. When it got dark we didn’t think the headlights worked because the driver sure as hell didn’t want to use them. Eventually he did turn them on (when it was almost pitch black)and we did arrive safely in Pokhara. We checked into Hotel Fewa and after some negotiation ... read more

5:15 pm 3/19/07 Parasi, Nawal Parasi Province, Nepal (just east of Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha): Back at the cyber cafe for another quick interview and a few more pictures. I'm the only one here, so the speed is much faster than yesterday with all of the kids chatting on yahoo! Only took 5 minutes to log into the blog... Today was a pretty mellow day - just got out of the Filters for Families compound on the outskirts of town (it is the home of the former police chief and his family; the locals ran him out of town a year ago; he is now in Kathmandu as a Secretary in the new government). Much hotter today, probably 85 degrees with 95 percent humidity. The house is solid concrete, though, so is very cool on ... read more

Today, I was very sick this morning. They say that Nepal is the worst place in the world for getting sick and they guarantee that it will happen. This morning I had a really high fever and I don’t think I’ve ever had a fever before (that I can remember anyway). So this morning I thought I was dieing. But I’m feeling a bit better now so you don’t have to worry about me. Yesterday, I biked up a mountain…okay maybe it wasn’t a mountain but a really really big hill…but it felt like a mountain and it took all day. Going up was the hardest workout I’ve had in a long time….Mom probably would have done well b/c its like spinning class but really drawn out spinning class….with thinner air. Going down wasn’t as fun ... read more

5:50 pm 3-18-07 from Parasi in Nawalparasi Province, Nepal: Yeah! Finally made it to our final destination yesterday about 4:00 pm. Rode the public transportation for 7-1/2 hours because the land rover was still not working, the mechanic could not find the part. What a story that will be to tell everyone, unfortunately, not now, the electricity goes off in 10 minutes at 6:00 pm. We made it into town today from the Filters for Families headquarters on the outskirts (about 1 km out). Went with Linda to a village about 45 minutes away by minivan ride for a village information session for the water filters. I wish I could upload photos, but just getting logged into the system took 20 minutes, so maybe when we get back to Kathmandu on Thursday. Right now I am ... read more

No we want to go to the International Inn!". ... read more

Today we leave Nepal, witch makes us a bit sad. We've had such a wonderful time here. Hopefully we'll be able to come back here. For the first time during our trip we actually talked to some other travellers. During India we were sort of in solitude and the places we stayed at had mostly older couples and locals. But we got to know some locals witch was fun. And in Nepal aswell...mostly locals. So l'd just like to say namaska Nepal or goodbye...... read more
