Ik was nu helemaal in ... read more

Lumbini is the birthplace of Gautama Siddhartha Buddha, the man who gained enlightment under Bodhi tree and became Buddha. Extensive research has proven this to accurate and Maya Devi Temple at Lumbini marks exact spot that Queen Maya Devi of Kapilavastu gave birth to her son and who later became Buddha. Now only ruined foundations housed in a modern building there is a simple plaque marking the exact spot where the queen stagger to following bathing in the nearby pool. We only had a short time in Lumbini arriving late in the day after another long bus journey we swapped over once again to local transport this time in the form of rickshaws to travel the short distance from our hotel with it Lotus Flower Pond in the front to the park where the Maya Devi ... read more

Crossing borders is, without a doubt, one of the most stressful aspects of travelling for me. Previous nightmares include: 1) Being aggressively woken from sleep (when crossing from Romania to Bulgaria) with the butt of a gun belonging to an armed guard who then ran off the train with my passport and ticket. 2) A very sweaty 27 hour bus journey from Nepal to India (2003) followed by officials refusing to believe that the picture of the girl in Rebecca Jane Lidster’s passport was actually me! Having survived these, and many other incidents, I thought I was prepared for anything. Experienced, confident, raring to go. When will I learn?! In an attempt to avoid any ridiculously long journeys, and to make the process of getting to India as interesting as possible, we decided to make a ... read more

This entry has now been restored in its entirety thanks to my awesome sister-in-law (now to be known as my Saraster). So the last few paragraphs will be news to most. M --------------- very quick as the power just cut and bacup battery likely to die, but I made it safely to Lumbini. Am staying overnight here and tomorrow bus and walking across the Indian border and rickshaw or whatever onwards to Gorakhpur where I catch my overnight train. the bus ride was interesting and I have pics and stories to share, but from the looks of it I'm not going to be able to do so from here. Have been waiting hours for the power to come back on and it died again after 15 min - and of course as I write this, it's ... read more

From Pokara we made our way south to India via the birthplace of Buddha. After taking some sketchy modes of transport including crazy buses, random 4x4 cars and trains where we kept everything locked to our person for fear of getting robbed we arrived in crazy Delhi.... read more

We arrived in Lumbini - what i think is Nepal's third largest town. It was a village and we were pleased to see that we were only accompanied by a few other foreigners. Lumbini is apparently the birthplace of Buddha and although it had great religious signifacance and many people come to visit the town is not very touristy at all. We had a kip and then braved street food the next morning with the locals - yum! before hiring bikes to explore buddha's birthplace - Maya Devi Temple - and some of the surrounding monasteries. The cycling was lovely they had leaf towpaths and i felt like i was in Amsterdam or in France in Amelie :) There is some comic value in this - Roof riding is rather unmerciless to the bum and Tom's ... read more

5:15 pm 3/19/07 Parasi, Nawal Parasi Province, Nepal (just east of Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha): Back at the cyber cafe for another quick interview and a few more pictures. I'm the only one here, so the speed is much faster than yesterday with all of the kids chatting on yahoo! Only took 5 minutes to log into the blog... Today was a pretty mellow day - just got out of the Filters for Families compound on the outskirts of town (it is the home of the former police chief and his family; the locals ran him out of town a year ago; he is now in Kathmandu as a Secretary in the new government). Much hotter today, probably 85 degrees with 95 percent humidity. The house is solid concrete, though, so is very cool on ... read more

5:50 pm 3-18-07 from Parasi in Nawalparasi Province, Nepal: Yeah! Finally made it to our final destination yesterday about 4:00 pm. Rode the public transportation for 7-1/2 hours because the land rover was still not working, the mechanic could not find the part. What a story that will be to tell everyone, unfortunately, not now, the electricity goes off in 10 minutes at 6:00 pm. We made it into town today from the Filters for Families headquarters on the outskirts (about 1 km out). Went with Linda to a village about 45 minutes away by minivan ride for a village information session for the water filters. I wish I could upload photos, but just getting logged into the system took 20 minutes, so maybe when we get back to Kathmandu on Thursday. Right now I am ... read more

Up at the very un-Christmassy hour of 4.30am to get a good start on the drive from Varanasi to the Nepali border. As we were getting in the four-wheel-drives Bill the leader handed us all little boxes and cards- very sweet of him, even if it most likely is covered by the company as trip expenses. They turned out to be small handpainted miniature Hindu gods and goddesses- I haven't identified mine yet, seems to be a minor one. Driving towards the border I would occasionally drop off but my head banging on the window would put an end to that pretty quickly. After about 3 hours we stopped at a "tourist restaurant" but apparently we were the first foreign tourists who had ever dropped in, they usually had Indian families. Much excitement ensued among the ... read more

Met at 5am in the lobby to spend almost eight hours in the 4WD's to the Nepal border. Managed to obtain the free thirty day visa with no problems this time; I double checked the expiry date carefully though. Unforunately, Hannahs Indian visa had been incorrectly dated & she had to return to immigration. We all took the opportunity to relax with a beer, something we've been unable to drink much of on this trip. All formalities complete, we boarded a bus & headed to Lumbini. After lunch & a short rest, the group reconvened & walked down the road to see the birthplace of Buddha. The tour was cut short as it was closing time, but we saw the actual spot where he was born; minus the tree of course. More beers were had with ... read more
