After saying goodbye to everyone at the airport I went through to the customs area. When I was there I met a lady who is living in Melbourne, but is originally from India. It was quite funny, because as we were walking through the metal dectors, they kept going off because she was wearing so much jewelry. It took her so many goes to get through. Once we got to Malaysia, we met up at the airport again. The hotel I am staying in is quite nice. It is surrounded by shopping centres. There is literally a mall on every side of the hotel. From my hotel window I can see the Petrona’s Towers, and the Kuala Lumpur Tower. After I settled into the hotel I had a shower and then went to send a few ... read more

When I first saw the movie Entrapment in the cinema I jumped for joy at the sight of the petronas towers. They are beautiful, and they were somewhere I had been! I'd stayed in the hotel connected to the towers, well fancy, we were lucky to have the executive floor... free food! yeaaaaurrrghhh... read more

BEING A CIVIL ENGINEER, I am always fascinated with mega-structures - buildings, transport networks, tunnels, bridges, towers, dams, and other construction works having interesting characteristics; not only with the height but also in terms of how the structure was built as well as the amenities and features within it. One of them is the popular Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) as the second tallest building in the world which I visited in April 2004. The TwinsThe Twins (Petronas) stripped off the crown from Sears Tower, Chicago (US) where I also visited in 1997 a year before the Twins got the title. By 2003, Petronas is already surpassed by Taipei 101 (Taiwan) for being the current tallest building with a towering height of 509 meters (1677 feet), 56 meters (224 feet) higher than Petronas. ... read more

Just a quick update as this journal is 2 and a half months too late - Spent a couple of weeks at my folks place just chilling with them. A few nights out in KL and lots of going to the gym(?). Little did I know there is an indoor surf break in Kuala Lumpur otherwise I would have lived there. Also went to the Perhentian islands for about 3 days. They a quite beautiful, and the resorts are pretty basic and laid back. No over the counter alcohol so people stayed pretty relaxed while there. Tasty food too. Sorry no digital pics... read more

Our annual holiday was to Malaysia. We spent 4 nights in KL, and 8 in Borneo, relaxing in a lovely hotel. I had been to KL before when I 'travelled' from 1988 - 1990, but it was David's first trip. We walked a lot and went up the Petronas Towers, the pride of KL. It was very hot. We went to China Town, the Central Market, as well as the places shown in the photos. I am not going to put in a blog for Borneo, cos we really did just laze around in the hotel and on the beach, apart from taking a trip into Kota Kinabalu, the highlight of which was the Sabah State Museum, which if you like museums was great - especially the traditional houses and the botanical gardens. Not as good ... read more

Having survived my luxurious lazing around on beaches on the Thai islands we headed further south to Malaysia and spent 3 or 4 days in Kuala Lumpur. I really liked the city, especially the hawker stalls where you could get a feast for next to nothing. Mmmm! Unfortunately the skybridge at the Petronas Twin Towers was closed for maintenance on the days we were there but we did manage to go up the KL tower and get spectacular views over the city. One day we decided to venture a little further out of the city to the Batu Caves. After an hour or so of waiting around in the midday sun for a bus, we made it to our destination. \'Lucky\' for us we visited a week after a Hindu festival and had the pleasure of ... read more

My time in Kuala Lumpur wasn't the best time I've had. In fact it was quite depressing, stressful and caused me to doubt whether I was quite ready to be travelling in Asia at all. The city itself on first impressions was busy, dirty and smelt bad, and I was unhappy bing there. Partially, I know this is because I'm a 'country lad', but also itis because it wasn't hat nice. It did smell. Saying that, many people I have met loved KL, sying that it had a life that other cities didn't have. I did enjoy the bustle of the night market in Chinatown, with crowds weaving their way through the stalls at every turn the words ' DVD movie, sir' being hollered across towards you. as with everywhere in South-East Asia the people were ... read more
