Next Monday I fly to Sabah. First stop, Sandakan I will be visiting an oil palm plantation to observe their internal sustainability audit. On Friday afternoon I will make my way to Semporna where I will meet my parents and take a boat to Mabul Island. We will be staying on Mabul Island for the next 3 nights, from which we will go by boat to Sipadan to dive. I will be getting doing my Advanced Open Water course in maybe the best diving spot in the world. I hope to see some very cool things. :) My mum, a true-blue city-critter, is having jitters about being stuck on an island where we might not have TV and no internet and worst of all, no shops! When my father and I suggested extending the stay, a ... read more

This is where i stayed at xmas, Kapali dive resort. It was absolutely amazing!!! Did 4 dives a day, got my advanced open water certificate and got to see a few dozen turtles and sharks on every dive, not to mention the millions of fish and gorgeous colourful reef. The water was 600m deep around sipidan island, not that i went that deep but it was still a great experiance not being able to see the bottom. ... read more

Sipadan was one of the places we were saving our money for. We bought ourselves a flight to Tawau and from there Lea arranged everything for a great 5days 4nights diving holiday. We were picked up by Borneo Divers crew from the airport and dropped off at at the "First" hotel in Tawau that Josie arranged for the night. Quick snack and off to bed we were as the next day would start early. At 7 o'clock we were picked up again to go to Semporna where we would get on a boat to Mabul. Staying a night in Tawau would give us two extra dives on the day of arrival - a good deal. The sea has proven to be rough and we had to turn around and change the boat to break the waves ... read more

Semporna Our transfer dropped us off in Semporna before lunchtime, but the town didn't look that promising. Jase had done a bit of research on travelblog just before we arrived and other bloggers really dissed the place and said the locals were rude and unfriendly. We spent the Sunday holed up in our room after unsuccessfully attempting to book a dive package at Mabul. Most dive operators weren't sure of availability until Monday but we had our fingers crossed for Borneo Divers so we could stay on Mabul. We didn't relish day dives from Semporna, especially not with one operator who had a leechy looking dive master. Fortunately we had Discovery channel in our nice hotel, so Jase was content watching Mythbusters and cheesy HBO movies, including a chick flick about Travelling Pants! We were grateful ... read more

Around in these areas there are a lot of houses on stilts. We have asked, but have not found the real reason yet. Some say they are sea gypsies and like to stay close to the sea. Fun, fun, fun, but we are not going to work there as we think we will be worn out in just a few days from the partying. We are “old” and need time to relax in the evenings and a little more than a mattress on the floor plus a fan. :) So what now? Right now we are trying to make the right decision... not easy! We just said no to job offers in Greece and Vietnam today. We know it is coming into high season in Egypt with great diving, so that is very attractive but if ... read more

Thanks to all of you guys!!!! Bon, Hong Kong. ... read more

First day of Diving! Went to dive sites around Mabul Island. Was pretty good, but have done better, but was great to be back under the water! We have booked to stay at a homestay on the Island so we can chill out for 2 days and snorkel which saves a bit of money and you can see so much snorkelling on Mabul. Its great staying on the Island, the locals are very friendly - kids keep saying hello to you no matter how many times they see you! Met some lovely people at the homestay, all different nationalities so makes for interesting table talk at after dinner. Brazilian, Belgium, Malay... Big disappointment on 17th when we are suppose to have our 1st day diving at Sipadan - basically we were forgotten about and had ... read more

We arrived in Mabul yesterday after a 45 min trip from Semporna (not a town to hang out in, an overnight stop to catch an early boat, although we found a cafe that sold pizza and baked bean toasties so it wasn't all bad!) in a boat skippered by William Wallace. Another Braveheart fan (Asia is full of them!). En route we passed three huge barges full of recently chopped down rainforest. The logging here is outrageous. William Wallace made us all take photos so that when we go home we can write to the Government to protest against it (all help greatly appreciated). We also passed an island called "Honeymoon Island" - it looked stunning, just a stretch of sand in the water with palm trees in the middle and a couple of huts. That's ... read more

17th March 2007 Kuala Lumpur (by flight, 2.5 hours) - Tawau (by taxi, 1 hour) - Semporna (by speed boat, 45 minutes) - Sipadan Water Village, Mabul Island (SWV). Arrived at SWV was about 1.00pm, we have received a great welcome from the resort’s staffs and enjoyed a lunch before checked into our room. The resort is built above the sea water therefore in any time you can see the fishes swimming around and coral surrounded the room unit in a close distance. We have surprised that the room is big, clean and comfortable. The design is adopted the “open concept” hence there is no air-conditioner unit attached but a ceiling fan is available. The best thing is the big balcony, it provide you a great place to enjoy the sea view without any building ... read more
