This blog is from year 2011. I have revised and added more facts. The older I get, the mature I am, looks and in thoughts but the memory is still good. So I pulled this out from an old folder thought this might be a good topic to share with all of you. My first visit to Kota Kinabalu for the Pesta Ka’amatan was in 2011. And this was my very first visit to the Borneo Island too. Sabah is the start- off that year and I want to share this with all of you about the harvest festival and introduce some indigenous groups in Sabah with photos I am happy about. I have always wanted to visit The Borneo Island, particularly Sabah, where I love to see the many cultures all under one roof or ... read more

We had another early start this morning, up at 7, breakfast and then waiting for the minibus to come and pick us up at 8.30am. It took about 45 minutes to get to the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Hotel and Orang Utan rehabilitation centre. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous with its golf course and glorious views over the South China Sea. It had its own little beach with wicker sun loungers placed in small groups around the grounds. We were let through the hotel complex and to the Rehabilitation Centre. Here we watched and video on how the centre work with Sepilok to rehabilitate young orphan orang utans. After the video we were led up into the rainforest surrounding the resort to a feeding platform. One of the rangers climbed onto the platform and started shouting. Very ... read more

Monday 20th August, 2012 Today we had decided on a lazy day so we had a bit of a lie in before making our way on the short taxi ride to Tanjung Aru Beach. We spent about 4 hours here and the sun was very intense. We did a little sunbathing and a little swimming/snorkelling but by early afternoon we had had enough sun and decided to come back to the hotel for a little siesta before showering and getting ready for the evening. After this we made our way back along to Tanjung Aru Beach at about 5.30 and it promised to be a good sunset with not as much cloud as previous nights. When we got there, there were lots of people on the beach, some eating in the restaurants or stalls, others just ... read more

I forgot to mention in my previous blog that on our way up to Mt Kinabalu we stopped by the roadside as one of the Rafflesia flowers was flowering. We paid the equivalent of 6 pounds each to walk a short way off the road to see the bloom which was about 60cm in diameter. Apparently it's the world's largest flower, doesn't have roots, stems or leaves but blotch red and white petals. It takes 9 months to mature but only flowers for about 5 days before it dies. The one we saw was on its fifth day and was just starting to look a bit passed its best, but it was good to see one. We also stopped en-route and the upside down house. Apparently a family live it in and they have one little ... read more

This morning was another early start with us up for breakfast at 7.30 as we were being picked up by our tour company at 8.30. More or less on time our minibus arrived and after dropping a couple of girls off in town we found out that we were the only people on the trip. The journey to Kinabalu Park took about 2.5 - 3 hours. The views were spectacular and we climbed high into the mountains. The roads were very good for the most part but in places workmen were working on them and they were a little bumpy but it just added to the experience. Eventually we got to Kinabalu Park, our driver paid the conservation fee and we entered. He thought we'd like to visit the Botanical Gardens overlooking Mt Kinabalu, but as ... read more

Wednesday 15th August, 2012 I was up and about early this morning to get ready and have breakfast before I went diving. The minibus picked me up at about 8.20 and there were already four people on it. It turned out that one of the couples had both been teachers and they lived at Whitley Bay! Small world! They were with their son and his partner whom he'd met in Middlesborough but was originally from Singapore and they both lived there now. After a short journey a chap got on with his two children. He lived in Hong Kong but his daughter and son lived in Henley with their mother. The four from Whitley Bay/Singapore were going snorkelling and the family were all going diving. It was just a short ride to the marina where our ... read more

à bientôt Phil... read more

The journey in bus is about 5 hours from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu. KK - Jesselton is based on British settlement. The old name Jesselton comes from Sir Charles jessel, the Vice-Chairman of the British North Borneo Chartered Company (1899) (Independant Company) To liberate North Borneo from the Japanese during the WWII, the Allied forces bombed and completely destroyed Jesselton leaving only the Sabah tourism building, the Atkinson Tower and the former Lands and Survey building. The large cost of rebuilding pushed the Chartered Company to sell to the British Government. North Borneo was under British protectorate from 1882 to 1946. After the war it became a crown colony of Great Britain from 1946 to 1963: independance year - Jesselton was renamed Kota Kinabalu on September 1968 for the Mount Kinabalu - name coming from the ... read more

Flight number 5 from KL to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah (North East Malaysian Borneo) was an uneventful 2.5 hours. We just had to get up far earlier than we would have liked to catch it. Our next flight is from Kuching in the far west of Malaysian Borneo and isn't for 2 and a half weeks so one the one hand we have plenty of time to get ourselves there, but on the other we have worked out what we want to see and do here and plainly do not have enough time. Everywhere we have been so far has been expensive, we haven't managed a cheap day yet, so when we landed at the airport instead of paying 20 ringgits to take a taxi into town we asked at the information desk and there was ... read more
