Welcome to ultra-modern Malaysia! Or it seems that way based on the other countries we have beem to in the last few months. It is like home with chain restaurants, super-highways, pricey cars, and little india. If only home was this cheap! Malaysia and Singapore will be good countries to do last I think, I little bit more like home to integrate us back into Western culture. It seems too soon to be thinking about coming home...time has been a strange concept for me during this trip. Each day flies by so quickly but when I look back it seems like ages ago that we were exploring Angkor Wat or even in Vietnam. Perhaps it is because we have done so much is a relatively short period of time. Any other ideas? I just can't grasp ... read more

Left Thailand on 3rd April and crossed the border into Malaysia, was such an easy border crossing- Yeah you look handsome enough in you get typed mentality! Was really curious as to what Malaysia was going to be like, the country's 85% Muslim so i was wondering how this would affect the pepole's attitudes and way of life. Our first stop in Malaysia was Penang Island, particularly the port town of Georgetown (named after King George III). We Crossed into Georgetown from mainland Malaysia by a short Ferry trip (There is actually a 13km bridge that joins Penang to the mainland, one of the biggest bridges of its type in the world apparently) First thoughts on Georgetown were: this place could be in Thailand! Malaysia wants to be a fully industrialised nation by the year 2020, ... read more

I have just spend three pleasant nights in the city of Georgetown on the Island of Penang, still in Malayasia. The city was founded as a British trading fort in the 18 century, as a result there are still numerous vestiges of its colonial foundation. However, to keep things interesting the city also has a large Malay, Indian and Chinese population, so with every corner turned, one is not really sure as to what he or she will find. I spent the past two days doing the usual tourist stuff. I found a self-guided "Heritage of Penang" walk that takes one to all the historical buildings and provides a brief explanation of each. I also took time to tour Fort Cornwallis, which has been turned into a museum with a number of interesting displays. This fort ... read more

Well, I left off planning on heading from Tamen Negara to Penang. However, as mentioned earlier, all of Malayasia seems to be going on vacation, so I had a change in plans. I made it to the bus station in Temeroh (approximately near the middle of nowhere) and asked about a ticket to Penang. I soon found out that all the tickets where booked . . . for the next 3 days or so. So after that, I inquired on tickets to Kuala Lumpur, and discovered these were sold out too. I found a ticket to KL at 8 the next morning and snapped it up immediately. I went to a nearby internet cafe to google "hostel temeroh" and came up with nothing, similar result on a search for a hotel. So, I swung my backback ... read more

Well, after a really long journey and a month in Thailand we've made it to Malaysia. Although the journey was long it wasn't actually that bad - we got a taxi from Had Rin in Koh Pha Nyang to Thong Sala, then a boat to somewhere, then a taxi to Sarat Thani where we had to wait for about 3 hours at 10pm! We were informed that we'd be able to use the Internet but it shut at 10 so we sat in an open stalled restuarant thing with these 2 girls that we met and ate and chatted till 1.30am when our train arrived. Luckily the train had beds so we were able to sleep until 8 in the morning when we had to get off the train at the boarder and show our passports ... read more

We arrived in Chinatown, Penang at about 2pm this afternoon. It was hot and muggy but the the island was full of life! We managed to get from Butterworth with no problems on a ferry which only cost 1.20 R ( about 20 pence) when the taxi driver was trying to charge us 65R- I guess we still have 'mug' & 'gullible' written across our backpacks! We then got a taxi to Love lane (where the cheap hostels are) for 8R another bargain esp since we managed to share it with 2 girls which we met on the boat. We checked out a few hostels/hotels before deciding on the Crystal Guest House, Chulia Street (50R) which was relatively new, had AC, 2 very clean beds and wait for it..... had hot water! I think my days ... read more

Georgetown (Penang Island) was a hectic trip! Of course our travel days are full of horrible painstaking stories and our travels from cameron highlands to penang top the list of horrible days! first off.. let me fill you in on Amanda--shes a crazy organizer like myself and also has short patience, like me as well. We have recognized when traveling our tempers feed off each other and we become quite the pair! The day started out pretty poorly by having to eat breakfast on the fly b/c it took the cook 30 min to make toast. the stairs from the guesthouse were nothing to laugh at and running down them w/ 50 lbs on our back and another 20 on our front was quite the workout. The bus ride was just a pool of sweat--we both ... read more

21st Feb Goodbye Highlands. Steph and i head out together for PENANG/Georgetown and as soon as we got down the mountains it was bloomin hot again. Damn. The bus ride had really good views of the mountains and it was quite scenic which was nice for a change. Once being dropped off by the bus in Georgetown we start walking to where we have some accommodation prebooked. We were heading in the right direction until Steph asked for directions (even though i reassured her we were going the right way! Hello indiana here) We ended up being told to go another way which ended up being the wrong way. So we walked more then we had to and once arriving at the (back)packers we find out that even though we had prebooked our accommodation from the ... read more
