We woke up at 5am to head to the ferry for Pulau Kecil, we wanted to be on the first one to optimize our chances of finding a decent room. The taxi picked us up in a beat up old Mercedes and as we headed out of town, he made a quick pitstop at the gas station to fill up (this is the second time on this trip that a taxi has stopped for gas after they've picked me up. Can you imagine this happening in San Francisco?) and I realized that I still needed to buy a roll of toilet paper...the just in case kind. I walked up to the window, and asked the shop guy if I could buy some toilet paper. He didn't understand, so the taxi driver offered a translation to him. ... read more

The first thing you must know is that I am now an Advanced Certified PADI diver. So can I get a little respect please? :) Now that we have that out of the way, a short update from the beautiful island of Kecil in lovely Malaysia. As you can see, I am quite fond of this place. The water is absolutely crystal clear, the diving is phenomenal, by far, the best saltwater diving I've ever done. I have spent lots of time in the sea which makes me happy. When not amongst the fishies, you can generally find me lounging at the beach or drinking a mango icee. This has been one of those weeks that words can't really describe. Just very nice and relaxing and calm. Kecil is a funny little island. It's beautiful, yes ... read more

Air Asia flight from Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) was delayed till 0815hours. Actual boarding time was 0730hours. The flight took 40 minutes to reach the KB Airport in Kelantan. It reached 10 minutes earlier than the actual time.Upon arrival, adjourned to the taxi counter to enquire for the fare price. It was RM70.00 for getting a cab to Kuala Besut Jetty. The distance was 60 KM but due to the overprice charges from inside the airport hence, we decided to walk out from the airport building to get a normal cab. The cab driver wanted RM60.00 stating about the length of distance and an hour journey. A forum's friend was waiting for us when we arrived in Kuala Besut Jetty. Bought the conservation tickets to enable us to pass through to board the speed boat. ... read more

What a difference a week makes. Just over seven days ago we struggled to cover 70Km and now in the last 3 days we have covered 192 miles - 70, 50 and 72 miles respectfully. I think it is safe to say that we are now acclimatised and have got our cycling legs back. Joy got upset when we left Kuantan after running over a live lizard. She is petrified that she could run over a live snake and it could possibly rise up and bite her in revenge. I have reassured her that the chances of that happening are very slim and, if she went a bit faster, almost impossible. The result of this advice is that our daily average speed has increased by almost 2mph. The east coast of Malaysia is beautiful and there ... read more

Arrived here in Kota Baru fine, staying in 'ideal travelers guesthouse' isn't really that ideal, the bathrooms pretty disgusting and there's a 3 legged cat hobbling around and an old Chinese man snoring on the front porch - I'm sure from that description you can imagine the sort of place we're in! Again Kota Baru has about as much to do as Storrington so scraping the barrel in terms of things to do and visiting every last attraction listed in the guide. Today is the Islamic day of rest so everything's going to be closed - so even less to do. And we're killing some time on the internet and reading. Decided to entertain me and Helen today by eating some peanut butter (don't worry was by accident I'm not that mental yet). Don't panic Mum ... read more

This blog was written on March 20 and Mach 24. So I’m sitting in the ferry from Jakarta to Batam. It’s a Pelni ferry, which is the large company which runs fast ferries all over Indonesia and have a virtual monopoly on many of the longer routes. The ferry is spic and span in much the same way that Malcolm Turnbull has a good handle on the Australian economy - that is to say, not really. It’s also full of cockroaches, which, I hasten to add, is where the Liberal Party metaphor begins to break down. Actually I’m not even sure if these things are cockroaches, I haven’t been able to catch one. They look like cockroaches but they have wings. I understand that cockroaches can have wings, but none of the cockroaches I’ve seen ... read more

Almost up to date now! Yesterday morning Mr Lee drove us from Kota Bharu to nearby Wakaf Bahru to get the jungle railway train to Jerantut, the first stepping stone on our way to the rainforest. The train was due to leave Wakaf Bahru at 6.33 am so we were first in line to buy a ticket at 6am. They only cost 12RM (about 2 pound 50p) each. We had been warned that, as the train is predominantly for locals, it was less than luxurious and that we should be prepared for an uncomfortable 8-11 hour journey shared with agricultural produce, crying babies, curious schoolkids and perhaps even livestock. Sure enough, as we boarded the train and settled into our filthy seats we saw people loading the train full with bag of fruit, vegetables and various ... read more

Hi everybody, Sorry for the lack of blogs recently, we've been in the Perhentian Islands, just off the North East coast of Malaysia. It's a beautiful place but somewhat remote and lacking in internet cafes. We've just got back to Kota Bharu on the mainland and we're heading down to the rainforest in the centre of Malaysia (Taman Negara). The train is at 6am tomorrow morning and is meant to be one of the most beautiful stretches of train line in the world. Once in the jungle we're hoping to do some of the animal spotting activities and try not to get bitten by too many leeches, mosquitos etc. We haven't been able to find a decent enough internet cafe to upload pictures yet but as soon as we do we will add full blogs and ... read more
